For the third night in a row, the Sox took the early lead and for the second straight night, fell short in the end. Jose Valentin hit his seventh homer of the season in the first after D'Angelo Jimenez singled to put the Sox up 2-0.
The Sox added just one more run the rest of the way, coming in the seventh off a Sandy Alomar groundout to third. Daubach, who doubled and advanced to third on a groundout by Joe Crede, scored on the play. Alomar made it to first as the throw went home.
Up 2-0 in the third, John Olerud singled in two runs to tie the game. The Mariners took a 4-2 lead two innings later with a Brett Boone sacrifice fly and Mike Cameron RBI-double. Cameron's RBI was charged to Wright, but the hit came off reliever Gary Glover.
Glover pitched into the sixth, where he gave up two runs on two straight singles by Ben Davis and Ichiro Suzuki and a triple by Carlos Guillen, his second of the game, past a diving Brian Daubach in left.
The Sox will play game two of the three-game on Saturday night at 9:05 CT on WGN. Bartolo Colon will pitch against Gil Meche.
