Calling up Borchard May Be Beneficial

Today the Sox called up slugger Joe Borchard from the Triple-A Charlotte Knights. Even though Borchard has been out to a slow start, this may not be a bad move for the Sox.

The Sox outfield has been juggled in recent games, with the only player staying in the same position being Carlos Lee. Magglio Ordonez has been playing more and more center recently, giving an opportunity for Brian Daubach to gain playing time by starting games in right. Sox manager Jerry Manuel has, in the past, always played the Sox' newest player in the game immediately after he is called up, and not letting him leave the lineup for a while.

This should make things interesting in the lineup as Ordonez will most likely be moving back to right. This leaves Daubach, who has been heating up as of late, out in the cold. Expect to see Konerko or Thomas getting time off as Manuel will want to get Daubach in the lineup as much as possible.

While Borchard has not yet found his spark this year in Charlotte, this may be his chance to prove he belongs in the majors. Despite his lower than usual slugging numbers, he still has a lot of raw power that is sorely needed for the light-hitting Sox.
