Cubs August 28 Minor League Recap

The playoff bound Daytona Cubs won their eighth straight sweeping Dunedin in a twin-bill for the second straight day. Iowa is hanging to its slim hopes beating first-place Omaha for the third straight game and Boise stayed in first place with 14-hit attack. Scott Baker tossed five scoreless innings for the win in his rehab appearance for Kane County.

AAA—Iowa 5, Omaha 2

Iowa (64-75) isn't going down without a fight as the I-Cubs won their third straight over Omaha (67-72) to remain alive in the playoff hunt. Iowa trails Omaha by three games with five to play, including another matchup with the Storm Chasers on Thursday.

At the Plate: Iowa scored four times in the fourth as the Cubs tied the game on Ty Wright's two-run single, which followed a base hit by Brad Nelson and a double from Edwin Maysonet. Wright scored the go-ahead run when the catcher used his mask to stop the ball, resulting in a one base advancement for the runners as Wright walked home from third. Iowa scored the final run of the frame on Tim Torres' RBI single. Wright added a RBI single in the fifth, ending the game 2-4 with 3 RBI. Edgar Gonzalez doubled twice with two runs.

On the Mound: Kyle Hendricks (3-0 2.38) got off to a tough start as the first four hitters reached on singles, two that never left the infield. The Cubs' right-hander was able to get a double play and a ground out to end the inning without any further damage as the Storm Chasers scored twice. That would be it. Hendricks allowed two hits over the next seven innings with a walk and four strikeouts. He got 11 ground ball outs in his 101-pitch effort....Brian Schlitter earned his 20th save of the season working a 1-2-3 ninth.


Had the day off to celebrate their second half championship. Neil Ramirez, recently acquired as the player to be named later in the Matt Garza trade, is scheduled to make the start the Smokies at Chattanooga on Thursday..

High A—Game 1—Daytona 6, Dunedin 2; Game 2—Daytona 3, Dunedin 0

Daytona (37-19) ran its win streak to eight games with another doubleheader sweep over Dunedin (23-38).

At the Plate: GAME 1—Dustin Geiger (281/.343/.467) and Kris Bryant (.320/.358/.640) blasted two-run homers while Pin-Chief Chen (.276/.365/.458) and Chadd Krist (.254/.356/.385) added RBI singles in the four-run third. Benjamin Carhart (.252/.301/.341) had the D-Cubs other two hits. GAME 2—Bijan Rademacher (.256/.324/.368) put Daytona on the board in the second with a two-run single scoring Anthony Giansanti (.296/.376/.382) and Wes Darvill. Yaniel Cabezas (.237/.304/.280) added a RBI single in the sixth. Darvill (256/.329/.370) finished the game 3-3 with two runs.

On the Mound: GAME 1-C.J. Edwards (0-0 1.96 ERA) came within two outs of his first win as a Cubs but could get out of the fifth inning before he reached his pitched count. A double, a triple, and a single to lead off the fifth ended Edwards' night. He finished with five strikeouts allowing five hits and a walk and two earned runs in 4.1 innings. Edwards' fastball was clocked in the mid 90s in the first and the fifth.... Lendy Castillo (2-0 3.32) pitched the final 2.2 innings earning the win. He allowed one hit and a walk with a strikeout. GAME 2—Yao-Ling Wang (3-4 3.57) only allowed a single and two walks in his four scoreless innings as the right-hander had his second straight positive outing after two shaky appearances. Ryan Searle (2-2 5.09), who had his season cut short by injury, got the win in relief preserving the shutout tossing the final three frames. The right-hander from Australia surrendered a single and fanned four.

Cubs Notes: In the excitement of Daytona's combined no-hitter last night it was overlooked they had clinched the second half title. The Cubs will host the first game of the playoffs against Dunedin, first half champs, at 7:05 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Low A—Kane County 9, Cedar Rapids 1

Scott Baker had his best rehab outing retiring the first 13 hitters he faced as Kane County (53-77) whipped Cedar Rapids (84-49)

At the Plate: Jeimer Candelario (254/.345/.400) got the Cougars on the board in the third hitting a three-run homer, his second homer in as many days and his 11th of the season. Carlos Escobar (232/.291/.384) added a two-run blast in the fourth for a 5-0 Kane County lead. Wilson Contreras (.250/.318/.432) and Jose Dore (230/.298/.351) ripped RBI singles in the seventh and Rock Shoulders (252/.346/.442) added a sacrifice fly in the 9th. The final run scored on an error by the shortstop. Candelario had a big night with his 35th double of the year, scoring three times. Gioskar Amaya (.256/.334/.376) went 1-3 with two runs and a walk.

On the Mound: Scott Baker (1-2 7.13) had his best outing during rehab retiring the first 13 hitters he faced, eight on grounders and three fly outs. He finished the night allowing a single in five innings with two strikeouts and got the win....Jose Arias (0-0 7.56) worked 2.2 innings but had trouble with his command walking six and allowing three hits. Only one run scored and he fanned three. Stephen Perakslis (1-3 2.88) retired all four hitters he faced, two on strikes.

Short-Season—Boise 10, Salem-Keizer 6

Boise remained in first place winnings the slugfest against Salem-Keizer as the two teams combined for 27 hits.

At the Plate: Jacob Rogers, Yasiel Balaguert and Justin Marra all homered and Kevin Encarnacion (.367/.444/.560) was 4-5 with two runs in the win. Rogers (.287/.401/.429) had three hits on the night, including a two-run shot in the third, his 8th of the season. Balaguert (.269/.339/.449) followed Rogers' blast with his eighth homer. Marra (.239/.333/.372) smacked a three-run bomb in the fourth (6), doubled, and scored twice. Daniel Lockhart (.291/.349/.330) and Carols Penalver (260/.340/.361) both doubled and drove in a run.

On the Mound: Michael Wagner (0-2 3.32 ERA) had his best professional outing tossing three scoreless frames to start the game. The right-hander allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out one. Sam Wilson (3-1 2.53) allowed three runs in two innings on three hits and two walks....Juan Paniagua (0-0 11.25) continues to struggle giving up three runs on five hits and a walk....Carlos Martinez (4-2 5.04) got the win, keeping the Volcanoes off the board the final two innings with three strikeouts.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Had the day off and play their final game of the year on Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs

The Cubs start the best-of-three game series with the Tigers in the semi-finals of the DSL playoffs on Thursday. Cubs and Tigers split their two games this season.
