Buehrle was pulled with two men on and up 8-3. Damaso Marte ended the inning. The lead, which expanded to 9-3 on a Tony Graffanino RBI-double in the eighth, was cut in half when Angel Berroa hit a three-run homer off Rick White. Kelly Wunsch recorded the final out in the eighth and Tom Gordon picked up his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.
The Royals had early the lead in the game, up 2-0 after three innings. They scored both runs in the third on an Aaron Guiel RBI-groundout and Joe Randa RBI-infield-single off the glove of a diving Roberto Alomar.
The Sox took over the rest of the way, hitting four homers total. Paul Konerko had the first one, a two-run shot, which tied the game up at 2-2 in the fourth. Joe Crede followed that up with a homer of his own, giving the Sox the 3-2 lead.
Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run shot in the fifth, putting the Sox up 5-2, and Tony Graffanino started off a three-run seventh with a solo homer. Ordonez doubled in the seventh, while Carlos Lee hit a sacrifice fly for the eighth run. Graffanino drove in the final run with a RBI-double in the eighth.
