Pre-Spring Training Q&A with Nardi Contreras

Nardi Contreras, the Yankees Minor League Pitching Coordinator, sits down with PinstripesPlus.com for a long Q&A session. He discusses which Triple-A pitching prospect might be closest to the big leagues, if any of the 'Killer B's' could land in the 2011 big league rotation, how good could Bryan Mitchell be someday, what are the keys for Evan DeLuca and Nik Turley, and much, much more.

PinstripesPlus.com: Realizing in the end it's not your decision and assuming Ivan Nova is able to anchor down a rotation spot, how comfortable would you personally be having that final spot be filled internally this year? Would the top candidates be Hector Noesi, D.J. Mitchell, and David Phelps? If so, are they all ready in your opinion?

Nardi Contreras: None of these yet have a full year of experience at Triple-A. But yes, I believe they all are close and that sometime during this year that all may be ready to step in as the number five starter.

PinstripesPlus.com: A spinoff question from that one then if I may - I know Noesi and Phelps are starting to get some national attention but D.J. Mitchell seems to continue to fly under their radar. How good do you think Mitchell can be?

Contreras: I believe that D.J. can be a Ramiro Mendoza type of pitcher. D.J. does not throw as hard as the other two but he has tremendous sink to his two-seamer. He also has a plus curveball and a plus changeup. He just needs to be more consistent within the strike zone with his pitches. He is working real hard at our pre-Spring Training camp and he is showing great strides. I really feel he will open up some eyes at the Major League camp.

PinstripesPlus.com: You said you'd like to see some more seasoning from those three so it begs the next question, how soon do you think it is before Dellin Betances, Manny Banuelos, and Andrew Brackman are ready to being big league ready? Do they all need at least one more minor league season too?

Contreras: I believe because of the power of their fastballs that it tends to make a difference from the three you mentioned earlier. The difference is because of their power stuff, they do not have to be as fine in the strike zone. Dellin and 'Brack' are in the mid to high-90's and Manny can be in the mid-90's. They will have a better chance of getting away with mistake pitches. They all have abilities and if things go well, there is a possibility they may help us at the Major League level. I do hope they get more seasoning in the minor leagues but how much depends on how well they pitch.

PinstripesPlus.com: Now this is my opinion - Betances needs work on his fielding and holding runners, Banuelos needs to get his old great fastball command back, and Brackman needs more work on his changeup. Of the three, which one is closest to fixing their biggest weakness?

Contreras: That is a tough one. I think Brack's changeup is a pitch that may not be needed right away at the Major League level. I say that because the development of his slider. As a number five starter, where there is a day off they are usually skipped in the rotation. This will give him time to continue to work and develop his changeup. Manny is 20 years old. I believe the power surge he developed last year excited him. This led to some overthrowing at times and not worrying about location. I feel he will now go back to commanding his pitches. With Dellin, this past Instructional League he worked real hard to improve his defense. He is also here at our pre-Spring Training camp getting after it. He will continue to work all Spring Training to get better. So my answer to your question is 'a toss up'. They all can be there and do well in a short period of time.

PinstripesPlus.com: Some critics have made the point that Adam Warren needs a big-time secondary pitch to make that next jump in his development. What are your thoughts about his game right now? Does he have one now and does he have one coming?

Contreras: He has three secondary pitches that are close to being quality Major League pitches. His changeup fades, his slider has tilt and quickness, and his curveball has depth with bite. He just lacks consistency at this time. He has made great strides for being in professional baseball for just a year and two months.

PinstripesPlus.com: We all know that Brett Marshall, Graham Stoneburner, and Jose Ramirez throw hard, throw strikes, and have good changeups. How close are they to getting that consistent plus breaking pitch?

Contreras: I will say that 'Stoney' is the closest since he had the makings of a slider when he joined us. He improved that pitch last year and it just going to get that much better this year. Brett signed with a high school slider, but because of his power we put that pitch in his back pocket and introduced the curveball. Last year he was coming back from his arm injury so we went back to the slider. His slider is steadily improving. Ramirez started developing the slider during Instructional League and seems to be working for him. We will see how the development of their breaking pitches improve this year.

PinstripesPlus.com: I've made the point that Nik Turley seems oh-so close to breaking out. What do you think he needs to do to do just that?

Contreras: Nik needs to continue to pitch and gain consistency with his delivery. His key to success is being able to repeat the delivery and release point. Once he is able to repeat, then the control and command of his pitches will be there. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. We do know that Nik will work hard and smart to succeed.

PinstripesPlus.com: Evan DeLuca is another guy who seems to have the stuff but the command is off. However, he seemed to be a completely different pitcher in Extended Spring Training last year. Can the same things be said about DeLuca? In your opinion is he a breakout candidate this coming year?

Contreras: Evan at this point has a plus fastball and a decent curveball and changeup. Again, just like most young pitchers it is about working to find the delivery. This is the key to be able to consistently repeat one's release point. Evan's future rise up the ranks depends on how quickly he grasps his delivery.

PinstripesPlus.com: How good could Conor Mullee be?

Contreras: He can be outstanding. In a very short time he has learned many parts of his delivery. From being a shortstop in college with seven or eight innings under his belt, he really has made a tremendous amount of improvement. He has also learned the foundation of both the slider and changeup. Having a great fastball, quickly learning the delivery, and being an athlete will him in a fast rise up through the organization.

PinstripesPlus.com: I really like the fastball-curveball combination of Bryan Mitchell. Does he have the chance to develop his changeup into a similarly effective pitch sometime soon? And if so, how good could he be should he develop that pitch?

Contreras: He has the plus fastball and the plus curveball, and the changeup will also be there. He is also in that mix of young pitchers learning their delivery. I firmly believe that developing one's delivery will enhance one's rise up the ladder. Being able to repeat one's delivery helps with a consistent release point which leads to quickly learning to control one's offspeed pitches. With that, I believe that he has the chance to become a top of the rotation starter.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned stuff. The guy nobody seems to talk about is Shane Greene. With the way his stuff progressed at the end of last year, do you see him being one of those potential breakout candidates?

Contreras: Shane does have the potential to move quickly. He started to put it all together late last season. He continued to improve during Instructional League. His three pitches of sinker, slider and changeup have become Major League quality. He now needs to command them by pitching innings and gaining experience.

PinstripesPlus.com: You guys drafted some hard-throwing college relievers last year – Tommy Kahnle, Daniel Burawa, Preston Claiborne, Chase Whitley, Zach Nuding. Who should we be zeroing in on this coming year and who is the sleeper among that group?

Contreras: All of them. Claiborne and Whitley have the better delivery so they are a little ahead of the pack. Nuding has only one pro inning and an Instructional League to his name. He has shown some power to his fastball and will get the chance to pitch innings in 2011. Burawa and Kahnle has the plus power but need time to smooth out their deliveries to gain better control of their stuff. Including Mullee, the scouting department did a great job finding, drafting, and signing these power bullpen arms.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned last year's draft. Is Gabe Encinas a guy who could come on pretty quickly? In the early going he appears to be a Bryan Mitchell type. Do you agree?

Contreras: At this time I believe Mitchell has more power with his fastball and curveball. Gabe really hasn't pitched many innings. His innings consists of pitching in two Instructional League games this past fall. Gabe has grasped the delivery a little quicker which will allow him to command the strike zone better. Pitching strikes is always the foundation to moving up the ladder.

PinstripesPlus.com: What does Jairo Heredia need to do to get back to being one of the better pitching prospects? Could you see him following suit like Betances and Marshall did a year ago as coming back better than ever?

Contreras: He just needs to get stronger. He, like many young Dominican players, sends money back home so that their families can live okay. He will need to make sure that he keeps enough of his salary to stay nourished. That way he would be able to perform to the best of his abilities. He has a great curveball and changeup. He pitches strikes. Now he needs to make sure that his power is there. I believe with better eating habits the power and strength of his body will enhance his velo. Hopefully he has learned if he first takes care of himself, his rise up through the organization will allow him to better take care of his family.

PinstripesPlus.com: When and if that power does come, could he be a guy who moves very quickly?

Contreras: Yes, because he has the plus curveball and changeup, and he is a strike-thrower.

PinstripesPlus.com: IMO Sean Black and Craig Heyer just seem to get lost with all of the great pitching depth. Should we be paying more attention?

Contreras: Our pitching depth is a wonderful thing. Yes, Yankee fans should be paying attention to them. Craig has a chance to be a starter in Trenton. He is not a power pitcher like Betances, his strengths are in other areas. He is a strike-thrower with very good pitches in his sinker, slider, and changeup. I believe this past year he ended up with a walk ratio of 0.50 per nine innings. He also had a very successful Arizona Fall League season. 'Blacky' just finished his first full season by successfully pitching in Charleston and Tampa. His repertoire consists of both fastballs and a very good curveball and changeup. He is also a strike-thrower with pitch-ability. They will both pitch in the big leagues, hopefully it is with us. We have mentioned many pitchers in this interview and I believe they will all pitch in the Major Leagues. Hopefully they all pitch for the New York Yankees but that may not be possible.

PinstripesPlus.com: You guys have a lot of young arms at the lower levels – Brett Gerritse, Mariel Checo, Taylor Morton, Matt Richardson, Evan Rutckyj – which one in your opinion is ready to take that next step in their development?

Contreras: They all have qualities and something special about them. Again, it is the pitcher that lassos his delivery the quickest. They are all going to pitch. Rutckyj is a lefty and is here early at our pre-Spring Training camp working daily to get better. He has power to his fastball. During his time in the Dominican Instructional League he developed a nice slider. He also has the makings of a good changeup. Checo has some power to his fastball. His changeup has come quicker than his slider. Gerritse has a power curveball and he has started to develop the changeup. Morton has a very good changeup and is developing the slider. For all these young pitchers, it goes back to learning their deliveries and repeating of the release point will follow. To answer your question - the young man that grasps his delivery the quickest.

PinstripesPlus.com: You have some guys coming back from injury – Brandon Braboy, Tim Norton, Gavin Brooks, Grant Duff, Caleb Cotham, Jeremy Bleich, Alan Horne – are any of them back with you in the regular throwing program or are they still rehabbing?

Contreras: Norton is slightly ahead of the others mentioned. 'Norty', Braboy, Brooks, and Duff are all on the mound. Bleich, Cotham, and Horne are still in the long-toss program.

PinstripesPlus.com: Can Kramer Sneed be like Shaeffer Hall this coming year?

Contreras: Hall's delivery was more advanced than Sneed's but Sneed has more velo to his fastball. During Instructs Sneed took hold of his delivery. He also improved his slider, plus he has a decent changeup that he can build on. As time brings all this together, he will have a chance to climb the ladder quickly.

PinstripesPlus.com: Are there any more of these lower level guys that I haven't mentioned that could surprise this coming year?

Contreras: Francisco Gil is a name that quickly pops up in my head. He made great strides which allowed him to take control of the closer's role at Charleston. The velo to his good sinking fastball is average and at times above. He has a quality curveball, his changeup fades, and he attacks the strike zone. I understand he has really worked hard to be in better shape when he comes into Spring Training. Because of the stuff he showed last year, I am very excited to see him at work this year.
