Q&A with Danny Reed - Part I

We sat down with Charleston RiverDogs broadcaster Danny Reed for such an extensive Q&A session that we had to break it into two parts. In part one he gives his early impressions of Slade Heathcott, what differences he has seen in J.R. Murphy, what he has seen from Gary Sanchez lately, and a whole lot more!

PinstripesPlus.com: I know it seems obvious, but give me your early impressions overall as to who is standing the most out in your opinion.

Danny Reed: I'll definitely say Slade Heathcott. There's such a noticeable difference form this year to last year. When I first saw that first day at our pre-season media day I noticed that he had taken off probably about ten pounds. Weight-wise he's still the same, but he's trimmer and I think he's stronger. The ball is making a different sound off of his bat this year and the defense is still fantastic, but he's doing a much better job of simply putting the ball in play. He'll still have his instances where he'll try to do too much; he'll still swing and miss at those high fastballs just like anyone else. He's not nearly chasing as many breaking balls in the dirt as he did last year because I think he's understanding how pitchers are trying to work him and he's not going to go after those pitches. He wants a fastball either a little bit inside or a little bit outside and he knows where to put it. His defense is unreal. He's made two more catches this year that nobody else in this league can make. It's just going to be a matter of time before the Yankees can get him up a level. I could realistically see him even getting a cup of coffee up in Trenton by the end of the year, maybe only a couple of games, but if he progresses from what he's done to this point and keeps doing it in Tampa, because he's going to wind up in Tampa at some point, I don't see why he couldn't get five to ten games in Trenton by the end of the year.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mention him coming back to Charleston this year. J.R. Murphy is back here as well. What differences have you seen in him this year versus last year?

Reed: Murphy's a little bit bigger. The first I saw him, his chest was a little bit bigger, his arms were bigger, and I'd say he's put on about 15-20 pounds. It's good weight. I asked him 'you've lifted a good bit this offseason, I can tell', and he said there was definitely more of an emphasis on strength and conditioning in the offseason. He said the Yankees were big helping him do that. You can tell when he makes contact now. Last year, sometimes when he made contact you were like 'okay, he's got some good natural power' but it seems a lot more often this year and his contact can give you some whiplash. He's got great pull-side power, but a lot of his big hits go to right-centerfield. He's just got that ability to go the other way. He's a lot more calm at the plate, he's more disciplined, his stance isn't as wide - I've actually talked to him about that this year and a couple of other people - his stance last year was really open. People could beat him with breaking pitches low and away, not the big strong 12-6 curves, but the slurvy ones. He had so much trouble with that because he was so wide open and couldn't put [the bat] through. He's closed off the gate a little bit and he's only struck out nine times this year in almost 90 at-bats. It's one of the best ratios in the league. And I think just like Heathcott, he's understanding how pitchers are trying to work him. Many of his hits are knees and up. He doesn't go after too many low balls because he has that great balance and doesn't crunch his stance real low like a Tony Phillips, Juan Pierre, or somebody like that because he gets what he needs to see to hit the ball. A lot of what he gets is mid-thigh and up, and he'll swing at a lot of balls around his chest, that's why he'll pop up a lot. But when he connects it sounds great, it looks even better, and he's in the top ten in RBI in the league right now so the improvements are visible. Just like Slade, he's not going to be here very much longer. I don't see him getting to Double-A this year just because of how much depth at catching the Yankees have and that's not a knock on his abilities. I think with what they have ahead of him he could definitely be splitting time with 'Higgy' up in Tampa by the end of the year and then they're going to have a touch choice to make for 2012.

PinstripesPlus.com: Ramon Flores, a guy you got to see a little bit last year, has gotten off to a nice start. What are your early impressions?

Reed: He plays the game like he's a 40-year old, like he was born with a bat in his hand, and plays like he was a baseball player right out of the womb. It's amazing how he takes pitches. Guys at this level don't take pitches. Guys are enormously aggressive and that's why the strikeout totals are so high, not that his aren't. He has 19 strikeouts this year in 21 starts which is a bit high, but he's walked 20 times. He's a 19 year old that has walked 20 times already. He leads the league in that category, he's top five in on-base average. He's proven to me day after day that he doesn't need three hits per game to be successful. He knows if he gets on base that's helping the offense. If he can get a pitch to drive, he'll go the opposite way. He'll show pull-side power. Some of the contact he's made on this road trip, balls have just been crushed. He hit one to the right-center warning track in Lakewood that probably would have been out in any other park in any other city and in any other time. That one night it was really dreary in Lakewood. The air was real thick, it was almost like a light fog and for some reason the ball just got caught up. I even talked to [J.R.] Murphy about that hit and he said 'you remember Flores' hit last night, right? That ball was crushed'. For Murphy to come to up to me and say that about someone else, gives you an indication of how hard he hit the ball, but unfortunately it didn't leave. He makes really good contact. He's very smooth at the plate, he always looks like he's got a handle on things. Defensively he's not stellar but he's not bad. I'd say he's above average. He's got a pretty strong arm, he's pretty sure-handed. If the ball comes to him he's not going to drop it. He doesn't show the defensive lag that some of the guys we have to. He's got prospect written all over him. I think in any other year he'd be a Top 30 prospect. For me, if I'm looking at how Baseball America ranks their prospects and how you would rate their prospects - I think you have him at a higher position than Baseball America has him - right now I'd say he's between the two. But if he has a year like he's starting off this year, he's going to be a top prospect next year because he has such a good skill set and such a calmness, and a fluidity of how he does things. It's like he's 40 years old and he's only 19 [years old]. If he keeps doing it, there's no telling how high he's going to go.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned the defensive struggles of some and I can't help but think of Kelvin De Leon. Your thoughts?

Reed: In the first few games in Lexington when fly balls went out to right field it was almost like he had a sheet over his head. It was like he couldn't see where the ball was. He'd twist and turn and go all around. One resulted in an extra-base hit and I think one he lucked out catching basket style on the warning track. In the last two weeks or so he's gotten a lot better. I don't know if all of the sudden he got real comfortable or because he's seeing more fly balls in practice, but he's miles better on fly balls in just the last couple of weeks because as simple as it sounds, you need to be able to catch a fly ball when you're an outfielder. His errors this year - he's got four of them this year - they're all on ground balls because he catches them to the side because he wants to show off his arm. He'll play them off to the left to scoop them up and tries to throw in all in one motion, which in a way is good because he wants to get rid of the ball quickly but when the ball goes under his glove, that's when runs are scoring. We're in the top five in the league in unearned runs and it's because of plays like that. He reminds me a ton of Melky Mesa. He's got a bigger frame than Melky. He's heavier than Mesa was two years ago. I think he can hit for more power. Melky had amazing, electric power for how lean he was. De Leon can crush the ball, it's jut a matter of when he gets a hold of it. He has over 30 strikeouts this year and leads the league in that category. He hit in his first eight games. The strikeouts were mixed in but he had a handle on what was going on. He was not just pulling the ball to left field. He had several hits to right and right-center so he was going with pitches. When I think he starts struggling a whole lot is when that swing gets bigger than it already is. He tries to hit the ball 1,000 feet every time but when he can hone it back slightly and only try to hit the ball 700 feet, he actually puts it in play every now and then. I saw him doing that those first eight games of the year and that's one of the longest streaks he's had. Defensively he's gotten better but he needs to continue to get better if he wants to continue to move throughout the system. Offensively you can tell there's a budding power prospect there. You've referred to it as 'now' power. I agree. He's hit opposite field home runs, he's hit left field home runs. So it's there. He just needs to figure a way where his swing isn't three miles long. If he does that his hits will come along, the average will go up, and then he'll see that his natural power will allow him to hit home runs and that he doesn't have to swing that hard. He'll figure it out.

PinstripesPlus.com: You just figure it out. Anderson Feliz got off to a rough start but has been picking it up lately. What have you seen from him from the beginning of the year until now?

Reed: Timing-wise he was really off. He started 2-33 and a lot of it was he wasn't catching up to fastballs or he was getting fooled on breaking balls. Recently he's putting the bat on the ball pretty well. He had a three-hit game [in Delmarva] the other night, he hit his first home run over the right-centerfield wall. I think he's hitting over .270 since that 2-33 start. He's still striking out but guys that are 18 years old in this league are going to strike out, but he's starting to see the ball better out of the hand. In the 2-33 start, he was struggling in every way conceivable; he wasn't seeing things, he was late, he wasn't getting a handle on breaking balls, but just like Heathcott and Murphy, he's starting to realize what pitchers want to do to him. If he can get a fastball early enough in a count, he's going to drill it. He's going to have trouble with breaking balls just like De Leon is and think for right now that's something we're going to have to live with. But if he can jump on a fastball, he's got a quick bat. He's got some power. He's 6-foot, 190 [pounds]. In the face he reminds me so much of Jose Pirela that it's not even funny. He's got the long arms of a Jimmy Paredes. If he was as athletic as Paredes he'd probably be in Tampa right now because he has a better glove than Jimmy did and Jimmy is now with the Astros and he's ranked as a top prospect there. Feliz has the potential to be an All Star as a second baseman because he's got power, he's got speed, he can do a lot of those things an ordinary second baseman wouldn't. You can see that there's something there. I think he's going to hit home runs. I think once he plays more and more at second base he'll eliminate the errors and once he gets the power stroke going, he's going to get a whole lot better.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned struggles in there, what have you seen from Gary Sanchez? He's really been struggling lately.

Reed: It's timing with him just like it is with Feliz. Before he was put on the DL he was crushing balls every which way. He almost had two home runs on Opening night in Lexington. He hit a bomb over the hand-operated scoreboard in left-center and one, his first at-bat, he hit the very top of the right field wall, maybe a foot away from being another home run. So he could have had two homers in his full season debut. He gets hurt, he misses seven games - those first few games back he couldn't touch anything. He wasn't even coming close. He was late on fastballs, completely fooled on breaking balls, and then over the next few games he started putting things in play towards second base and right-center. The next couple of games he started putting things in play towards centerfield and now just over the last two or three he's been getting out but he's starting to pull the ball. He's starting to hit ground balls to shortstop and third, starting to hit fly balls to left. He's going to be someone who can use the entire field because he has that balance at the plate. He'll start open and then he'll close things up. His power for being 18 is unreal. It's so comparable to [Jesus] Montero that it's not even funny, just like the comparison with De Leon and Mesa, how they look and handle the bat. I don't want to say Sanchez isn't as good as Montero was at this level because I've only seen him for roughly 15-16 games and with the injury I don't think it would be fair to make that assessment. I think he's got a better arm than Montero had three years ago, I think potentially he's a better receiver because with Jesus the defense always lagged behind the bat but that's because the bat is just that good for him. Gary's bat can be that good and he gets on base more than Jesus did. I think the more and more that he sees live pitching, the more comfortable he's going to get and we're going to start seeing those 420-foot shots again that I saw in Lexington a couple of weeks ago.
