Q&A with Danny Reed - Part II

We sat down with Charleston RiverDogs broadcaster Danny Reed for an extensive Q&A session. In part two he gives his early impressions of Rob Segedin and Eduardo Sosa, which starting pitcher has been the most impressive, what he has seen from both Danny Burawa and Tommy Kahnle, and a whole lot more!

PinstripesPlus.com: Talk about Eduardo Sosa. I know you're a big fan of his.

Reed: On any other team I think he'd start every game. He can play all three outfield positions even though he's most comfortable in center. He's an awesome defender. Just like Heathcott, he can get to pretty much everything, and he's sure-handed. You don't have to worry about a fly ball going out to him because it's going to be caught and at this level - well some would be like 'you should catch it' - but remember a lot of these guys are 18 and 19 years old. Fly balls are not cans of corn. He's sure-handed, he runs well, and he's got a really good arm. He might have the best arm among all players not named Slade Heathcott. Heathcott's arm is far and away the best, perhaps in the entire league. Sosa bat-wise, I like his stance. His stance is like he knows what he's doing. He's not just up there fiddling with the bat or getting his feet set, he digs into that box left side, those feet are in the cement, he's got that bat up, and he knows where he wants to put the ball. He might strike out a good bit and he doesn't walk nearly enough. So far he has two walks and 17 strikeouts. If he's going to lead off in the future, I can't say those numbers will be reversed because that's not realistic but there needs to be a balancing act. You've got to be close to a one-one ratio at some point...17 K's and two walks, it's not real good. He's not going to hit a whole lot of leadoff while Heathcott is here. If Slade gets moved [up], I could see Sosa hitting a lot at leadoff. In the first couple of road games this year, Sosa had some really big hits. He had a two-run triple in Greenville which helped us come from six runs down, he had another two-run hit at [home], so you see there's a guy there who just needs to play and get people to notice him. He doesn't get the billing of a Heathcott, he doesn't get the billing of a De Leon, or the billing of a Murphy. In fact I don't think he even gets the billing of a Flores. He gets lost in the shuffle a little bit but there's talent there and he just needs to play.

PinstripesPlus.com: Well a guy like Rob Segedin gets lost in the shuffle too. Talk about what you've seen from him on both sides of the ball.

Reed: He's tough, he's really tough. I've known him for a month now and I don't know one moment where a smile hasn't been on his face. I think he really enjoys being at the field. He loves everything about baseball. Even when he's upset he's got a smile on his face so I don't know if it's a Hines Ward thing or what. He's play third, a little left [field] when Kyle Roller was on the DL and Flores was playing at first base. Rob did pretty well out there. I know third is where he's most natural. He's made nine errors this year but he's made some really good stops both to his left and towards the line. I think a third baseman with that kind of range initially is very pleasing and at the plate he's a guy who is really tough to strike out because he's going to fight off pitches. I've seen him this year where balls have been at his chest and they've up at his eyes and he's been hacking like he's cutting through some wheat, just trying to give himself a chance to see another pitch. Because of that he draws a lot of walks. Very seldom will he have one or two-pitch at-bats. He wants to work counts. He wants to get a pitch where he can hit a line-drive. He doesn't want to hit home runs, he wants to hit solid line-drives to left-center and right-center. He had a couple of big hits on the last home stand. On the road he's struggled a little bit. I wouldn't say he's been awful, but he's been in a little bit of a fun right now. He's 2 for his last 21, but he's been on base in 17 of his 19 games played. So just like a Flores, he's active in the offense. He's an involved portion. The hits aren't there right now but he knows just getting on base and he's helping the offense. He's very smart. He graduated from Tulane in three years with a double major, so he's very savvy in a lot of different ways. I think the Yankees have someone they can build around.

PinstripesPlus.com: Let's move to the pitchers. Of the starting pitchers, who has stood out to you the most?

Reed: Zach Nuding and it's not even close. It's a roster that doesn't have a whole lot of big pitching names. I can sit here and tell you that Shane Greene is the ace or how much I like Mikey O'Brien's toughness, but Zach Nuding is blowing me away. He's won three straight starts [entering Monday's start]. He doesn't act like a number five starter does. He's fearless. He'll throw any of his three pitches in any count. He trusts his pitches. The fastball is the big thing for him. It's mostly low 90s but he gets it to the mid-90s and touched 98 mph in Spring Training. He basically pitched himself to Charleston. It wasn't something where the Yankees knew they were going to put him here. He went out in Spring Training, busted his tail, and oh by the way we're going to put you in full-season ball after one start in the GCL last year. To completely leapfrog another go in the GCL, to completely leapfrog the [New York] Penn League to start here as a 30th round pick after two innings professionally, that has to tell you his work ethic and how much -- I can't say how much he improved in Spring Training because I wasn't there but it's how hard that he worked and how much that he trusts his pitches that's impressive. Carlos Chantres, the pitching coach for the RiverDogs, has said that the slider and changeup get better every time that he's on the mound whether it's a simple bullpen, a side, or in a game. Against Lakewood [last] Wednesday he was excellent; one hit in six innings. He ran into some trouble in the seventh but even the hits he gave up were weak line-drives, weak comebackers that got to the outfield. I think there was one solid hit in that entire seventh inning. He'll give up some fly balls. I know that Aaron Ledesma wasn't too please that he was giving up fly balls but they were weakly hit. Nuding was taking advantage of Lakewood being overly aggressive and he wasn't missing his spots. He'll slam the inner edge, he'll slam the outer edge, the slider can look really good, the changeup is coming along. He's really good so far.

PinstripesPlus.com: I know Nik Turley had the one rough outing in his first start of the season in Lexington, but talk about what adjustments you've seen from him since then.

Reed: He's not afraid to throw any of his pitches, just like Nuding. He's not going to blow you away with a 96 mph fastball but he'll spot his curveball, he'll spot his fastball, and he'll spot his changeup. Turley's smart. You don't see 50th round guys make it to low-A very often. I like how he sets up batters. He sets up batters to how how Mikey O'Brien sets up batters. He's very intelligent. He'll throw fastballs in a row, some curveballs in a row, but they're not just low and away, [they're] in and out, and he won't throw anything high. He got beat in Lexington because he left a couple of pitches up and because the ball jumps in Lexington like nowhere else in the league this year. He keeps that ball down, spots in and out, and he and Mikey are very similar in how they set up batters. They're both really smart.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned Shane Greene earlier. I know you saw a little bit of him last year but what have you seen from him this year?

Reed: Sometimes he can be knockout and other times he's going to knock himself out. He had a seven-run inning against Greenville, gave up a grand slam against Rome, but there's something about him that the other four starters don't have - he can flick a switch and he's completely different. In Lakewood he walked three batters, [had] two wild pitches, hit a batter, and still strikes out ten batters in five innings, only giving up three hits. He's got the ability to turn it on whenever he has to. That's what an ace has to do. He might not be the best pitcher we have right now from beginning to end - at the current moment I would have to say that would have been Mikey O'Brien but he had rough start the other night so I'd have to say it's Zach Nuding right now - but Greene has the potential to be the best of the five starters and that's why he was the opening night starter. He has a sinking fastball that gets a lot of ground ball outs [and] his slider has been really good. I would say it's the best slider that the RiverDogs have. It's tight, he fools right-handers all of the time, he wants to bust right-handers in and career-wise he's hit a lot of guys. This year what he's done though when he's gotten roughed up is he's not busting guys insid as much. I like that he's trying to work both corners but he was most successful last year when he was just punishing, punishing, punishing the inside black on right-handers. Left-handers, he didn't a chance to face a whole lot of them last year, but this year he's going more away to righties. Then he gets ticked off and starts going into righties more and they can't hit his fastball. He doesn't need to go to his slider too much because that fastball has so much downward tilt. Being 6-foot-4, he doesn't get as much tilt as a Brackman or Betances, or even a Turley from the left side. He throws that two-seamer, right-handers can't touch it, they get frozen on that slider, and he got ten K's in five innings against Lakewood after a real tough second inning that I thought he was going to explode. It looked like he was so angry because it rained for an hour and a half before the game, he looked like wasn't comfortable, and then he just got a look on his face that said 'I'm done with this, let's go'. Eight of his last nine outs recorded were strikeouts. They couldn't touch him.

PinstripesPlus.com: I know the bullpen has been a sore spot so I pretty much know the answer to this one, but which reliever has stood out for you?

Reed: I'll start with Danny Burawa. The first time I saw him in Lexington, his first pitch fastball, I was like 'okay, he's got some giddy-up'. I then found out after the game that he had hit 98 mph a couple of times and he was sitting 96 mph. Guys at this level aren't going to touch that. Guys in Tampa in the Florida State League aren't going to be able to touch that. The important thing for him right now is being able to spot that slider. It's a hard slider. It's an upper-80s, sometimes 91 mph slider and that's something even Randy Johnson couldn't do and his slider was regarded as one of the best in the history of baseball. But with Burawa, he gets such an extension out of that arm that I think that extra whip, that's why he gets so much speed. He has a lot of arm strength -- I'll talk about Tommy Kahnle in a moment but Kahnle has so much shoulder strength -- Burawa gets so much of his ability from that long, lean frame, works that arm backwards, and then get ready for that fastball because of you blink, you're going to miss it. When he sits 94-96 mph and touch 98 mph, he's going to be tough to touch. He has said in a couple of interviews that his slider is the best it has ever felt. A couple of times this year he has thrown some unbelievable sliders, but in other instances it's like he has never thrown it before. If he figures it out he's not going to be here much longer. He's been fun to watch. When he throws that fastball, the sound it makes when it hits the glove, it's almost like throwing a brick to the plate. It thuds. It's not like a baseball going into leather. It's hard for me to describe - when a pitcher makes a different sound with a fastball, you're dealing with something really unique.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned Kahnle so go ahead with your thoughts on him.

Reed: One of the most powerful pitchers I've ever seen. He's just straight brute intensity. He almost looks like he wants to throw his right arm to the plate instead of just the baseball, that's how much torque he puts into it. He brings that arm pretty tight and then - I don't think he throws as hard as Danny - I know he hit 98 mph but he mostly sits 93-94 mph, but that changeup is something else though. And sometimes the slider can be even better than the changeup. I know his change is his bread and butter and that's what he used in the Penn League last year, fastball-wise though, if he can control it more nobody will touch him. He's walked quite a few but he's also struck out a few more. A couple of times this year when he's been in, he's walked the bases loaded and then struck out consecutive guys to end an inning. I commented that I wonder if he just likes it when the bases loaded so he can work out of the jam and feel like it's the Hollywood style ending to an inning or be like 'alright I've got them loaded so let's show them how good I am' - fastball, fastball, fastball...fastball, changeup, fastball. Against Rome he had Jacob Alfonso so far out in front of a changeup that he could have thrown it twice. It's one of those pitches where you don't just raise your eyebrows but he almost reaches up there and shaves them off. That's how good he can be, but they're here because they need to figure out. Both he and Burawa have world-class stuff. Can they do it consistently? Can they get the secondary [pitches] working the same way as the fastballs do? He's someone else that if he does it, Tampa's going to get another reliever and he's going to join [Chase] Whitley and [Preston] Claiborne, and that's going to be just a ridiculous bullpen.
