Q&A with Yankees 18th Round Pick Hayden Sharp

Bursting onto the national scene about as late as possible in the scouting process, Hayden Sharp suddenly garnered massive scouting attention just weeks before the MLB Draft. We sat down with the Oklahoman to discuss getting drafted, an incredible velocity increase, a private workout with the Yankees in New York, and his feelings on the looming signing deadline.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Are your height and weight still 6'6", 200 lbs?

Hayden Sharp: Yes.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Before we get to the baseball side of things lets talk about any other sports you played. Obviously football is big because you have the scholarship to Central Oklahoma…

Hayden Sharp: Yeah, football and then basketball also – I played three sports for pretty much my whole life up through high school, and played power forward on the basketball team.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: The scholarship to Central Oklahoma is to play quarterback specifically?

Hayden Sharp: Yes sir, it is. I was recruited towards the end of the season by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, which is a junior college, East Central University, University of Tulsa, and Central Oklahoma. They were all to play quarterback, and I chose UCO because they were going to let me play both baseball and football.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: So is it safe to say that football was your bigger sport through high school?

Hayden Sharp: It was until this year, and then I don't know what happened, but I got about 10 MPH more on my fastball.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: So how big a factor is football going to play in the decision you are going to make in a few weeks?

Hayden Sharp: Well, it really isn't playing that big a role in my decision anymore, because I've pretty much made up my mind about what I'm wanting to do with sports going forward. I signed another letter of intent to play baseball at Eastern Oklahoma, a junior college in Wilburton, Oklahoma, and I've pretty much made up my mind that football is not an option right now.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: So right now you are either going to sign with the Yankees or go the JUCO route at Eastern?

Hayden Sharp: Yes, sir.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: When was the first time you realized that you could do something with baseball beyond just being pretty good in high school? Some guys know it as early as little league, and some guys don't know it until the last year or two of high school. When did it first hit you?

Hayden Sharp: Well, it wasn't until my last regional game of this, my senior season. There was a scout from Northeastern State University at one of our regional baseball games in Morris, and when he showed up with a radar gun that was the first time I had been clocked all year. Before that I only had one offer for baseball from Seminole State, but he got me throwing 96-97 MPH. A week later we had made it to state, and all of a sudden I had 40 pro scouts there, so it all happened for me in period of five to seven days. It just all blew up at once – it was crazy. Two weeks after that teams were wanting me to come and do private workouts, and a month later the draft happened and I got taken. So to answer the question, I really didn't realize it until about a month and a half ago.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Wait a second, you had no idea you even had a chance to be drafted until the beginning of May, four weeks before the draft itself?

Hayden Sharp: Yeah, it was the beginning of May. We played state on May 6th, I think, and there was just a million radar guns behind the backstop – it was just all crazy!

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: What did that feel like for you to suddenly be getting all this attention, and not even in the sport you thought it would happen with? Was it intimidating?

Hayden Sharp: At first it made me nervous, but I just told myself that if I get drafted or not, I still have college for sure. So it really didn't get to me too much until after our state game, and then every scout was coming up to me, giving me his card, and telling me they wanted me to come to private workouts. That's when it got a little stressful because I realized I suddenly had some big decisions in front of me.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: What did you think you were throwing before the scout from Northeastern State clocked you at 96-97 MPH just a few weeks ago?

Hayden Sharp: I knew I had broken 90 MPH, I knew that for sure, but I had no idea I was upper 90's – I didn't think I could hit 95 MPH to be honest with you. I thought I was 88 to maybe 92 MPH. After that game my dad and the Northeastern scout came up to me and the scout asked me if I knew how fast I was throwing. I said, "no." He said "you were hitting 96-97 MPH, easy." He told me it was insane to him that I only had one offer to play baseball somewhere– he couldn't understand it. He said "this is your sport." I said "Well…[laughs]..I didn't know that." I mean, I knew I was good at baseball, but I didn't know I had the potential to get drafted out of high school.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: When was the last time you were clocked before that, and what were you throwing then?

Hayden Sharp: I had went to an Under Armour Baseball Factory event at Edmond Santa Fe high school back in September, and the fastest I threw there was 88 MPH – they clocked my fastball from 85-88 MPH.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Wait, wait, wait…are we talking September, as in 8-9 months before the draft? Your fastball was 85-88 MPH then?

Hayden Sharp: Yeah! [laughs] I t was about a half a year ago. I don't know what I did differently, I don't know what changed, but my arm must have gotten in shape or something. When I had gotten the Baseball Factory thing in the mail it was the middle of football season, so I figured I'd go because it would be pretty cool to play in the All-American game if I could make it. When I went, there were scouts from the Pirates, Rangers, and Orioles I think, and they said that throwing 88 MPH with my frame was pretty good, but they thought I had a shot at playing Division-1 baseball. About a month after that in early November I went to a camp at the University of Oklahoma after having played a football game the day before. I was sore and everything from the game, and I was hitting 91-92 MPH. That was the last time I had been clocked until that scout got me at regionals. When that happened I was just like "Dang!" [laughs] I don't know what I changed, but something's working!

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Can you give us the details on your new arsenal?

Hayden Sharp: I throw a fastball, curve, split-finger, and I used to throw a slider but I don't know how well that's going to work out if I go to the minors. My curveball comes in 78, 79, maybe 80 MPH ever once in a while. It's not a 12-to-6 by any means though, I throw it hard and for strikes – it's a pretty good pitch, I think. The split-finger is right around 75 MPH most of the time – I love that pitch because it looks like a knuckleball, but then it all of a sudden just drops out of nowhere. I throw it right at the middle of the zone and it just falls out right at the end. The slider is about 83 MPH, I'd say.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: What is your outward personality on the mound? Does the football mentality seep out at all?

Hayden Sharp: You know, I try not to show emotion at all, because I don't like people trying to get in my head. I try not to let things affect me too much one way or another. I used to let that happen a lot when I was younger; I used to get so mad at myself. I always want to be the one to make the play, and that's why I like playing quarterback, because I'm always in control. That's the same reason I like to pitch – I get the ball every time and I can make the difference in the game by myself.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: So you're pretty stoic out there then?

Hayden Sharp: Yeah, they told me after games that I "looked comfortable", and in the state game I had the bases loaded with one out in three straight innings, and I struck guys out back to back three times in a row to get out of it. They said that they were impressed that I could work myself out of a jam without getting that rattled, which was good to hear. Of course in my head I'm thinking, "oh my gosh, what did I get myself into," but at the same time I need to make sure I keep that to myself and not let anybody see it.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Getting back to the draft, how did you find out when you got picked?

Hayden Sharp: I had a vacation planned from June 6th through 12th to go to Florida. After all of the craziness started, my advisor Jay Franklin came to me and told me the draft started on the 6th, and I was just like "Oh my gosh, I guess the vacation is cancelled!" He told me to not worry about it, to go on vacation and not change anything up; use it as a time to relax and de-stress after everything that had happened since the regional game. So we went on vacation, and I was sitting on the beach around 4:00 in the afternoon. Jeff texted me that this thing was getting ready to happen, and asked if I was ready. I knew the Yankees, Rays, and Cardinals were interested and at that time it was towards the end of the 17th round, so I started to head back up to the room and didn't even get to the stairs before my phone rang. It was Dennis Woody and he told me congratulations, the Yankees just took me off the board. All that went through my head then was "WHOA…" [laughs]

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: You mentioned Seminole College earlier, which is where Lloyd Simmons was a legendary coach, and now you talk about a call you received from Dennis Woody. The Yankees added those two guys to the scouting staff this year in part because Oklahoma was so stacked and they wanted to make sure they had top-notch coverage of the area. What was your interaction with them like?

Hayden Sharp: I talked to Zero, that's Lloyd Simmons, at the state game; he was the one that was watching me from the Yankees. After that I spoke to Dennis Woody about coming to New York to do a private workout for the Yankees, and I ended up coming up there for one. Dennis Woody was the one I talked to the whole time through that process, while I was there, and when he walked me through everything. He told me that the Yankees were wanting to draft me, but they just didn't know where because they had only seen me pitch that one time in the state game. He's told me that I'm going to be a summer follow because they need to see how I progress and if I work hard enough – they want to see if I really want it or not. So that's where we are; I've talked to Dennis probably three or four times since the draft.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: What was it like to get all geared up with Yankee stuff after they picked you? It must have been pretty cool…

Hayden Sharp: Oh yeah, it was for sure! [laughs] Even before the draft, when Dennis called me about the workout in New York, I said to myself "Oh, I am going to New York." [laughs] St. Louis had wanted me to come in for a workout, the Rays asked, the Padres asked, the Rangers wanted me to come to Texas – they all wanted me to do these private workouts, but the only one that made me say it was worth spending the money on was taking the trip to New York. The Yankees have been my favorite team ever since I was a little kid, so I was blown away that I had a chance to actually play for them one day, and to pitch in Yankee Stadium would be one of the coolest things in my life, so I decided to go to that one. It's worked out pretty well so far!

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Were you pitching in Yankee Stadium?

Hayden Sharp: Yeah, it was a private workout at the stadium.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: How did you throw for it?

Hayden Sharp: I think they said I was throwing 93-94 MPH pretty consistently. It went pretty good.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: You said you were a Yankee fan growing up, right?

Hayden Sharp: Oh yeah!

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: How did that happen out in Oklahoma? Is it a Mickey Mantle connection that started with your family back in the day, or did you just find it on your own?

Hayden Sharp: It was just the Yankees always being good when I was a little kid, and I jumped on the bandwagon. New York is just…I don't know, I just love that atmosphere – it's great. Everyone loves the Yankees, I don't understand how you couldn't. I've watched Derek Jeter for 15 years; he's been one of my favorite players because I used to play shortstop until I got 6'6" and just too big to play there. I also really liked Mark Teixeira, even when he was with the Rangers. When he signed with the Yankees I was like "wow, everyone is where I want them to be right now!" [laughs]

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Did you get a chance to check that New York atmosphere out first hand when you came for the workout?

Hayden Sharp: No! We were trying to get up there and our flights kept getting delayed. I was supposed to pitch on the 24th – I was supposed to check in at the stadium at 8:00 AM on the 24th. Well, we left on the 23rd to make sure we got there on time, but that was when the Joplin tornado hit and it came right through Oklahoma on the way to Joplin. That stopped us from flying out of Tulsa for a while, but when we eventually did we had to stopover in Houston instead of Chicago, and then had another hour delay in the air over Virginia because Newark was completely shut down by storms. We didn't get into our room until 3:00 that morning, then we had to wake up at 6:00 to go to the stadium to pitch. We got done with everything at maybe 2:30-3:00 in the afternoon and our flight was at 6:00, so we had to go straight back to the hotel through all the traffic – it took about an hour and a half – rushed to pack our stuff, ran straight to the airport, and just came home. So I went up there, slept, pitched, and then came back home.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Are you going to be pitching at all this summer?

Hayden Sharp: Yeah, I'll just throw in a game in Tulsa probably, at the old Drillers stadium, so they can come and watch and see where we stand in terms of signability and all that stuff.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: So you are not going to play a whole season, you will just be pitching one game towards the end of the signing period?

Hayden Sharp: Yeah, it will be a single game.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Will it be for an actual team, or is it going to be more of a simulated game?

Hayden Sharp: It should be a regular game. There's a sandlot team in Tulsa run by Clay Overcash with the White Sox. They have a big facility, so I go up there with my catcher and throw my bullpens and stuff like that every 5-6 days. I haven't thrown in a game since the beginning of the summer because I've just been trying to workout and get in shape so I can be at my best at the end of the summer.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Do you have any idea when that game will take place?

Hayden Sharp: I'd say in a few weeks. I throw hard bullpens every 5-6 days, so I'll probably have 2-3 more of those before the game.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: In general, how interested are you in starting a professional career if it is possible?

Hayden Sharp: Oh, that's my main goal right now. I'd like to start a professional career with the Yankees if we can work something out. I think this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, and if I sign and it doesn't work out for me, then I can always go back to school. I don't feel like I have to play collegiate baseball or football if I can possibly play professionally now, but if it doesn't happen now I'm thankful to have the option to go to college and get better there.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Are the Yankees aware of your number?

Hayden Sharp: No, we really haven't talked about it because they've seen me pitch only one time, and that's the whole reason for the summer follow. They don't want to throw a number out there that's too low or too high, they just want to see me at my best towards the end of the summer, and then make a decision.

Kevin Levine-Flandrup: Are you nervous about that aspect of it?

Hayden Sharp: No, I'm not nervous because I think I've improved so much since they saw me at state, from locating my pitches to my form and mechanics – I've improved a lot. If they thought I was good enough to draft then, I think they'll definitely see good in me when I pitch at the end of the summer. I've been working hard and am giving it my best.

I haven't thrown in a game since the beginning of the summer because I've just been trying to workout and get in shape so I can be at my best at the end of the summer.

\r\n\r\nKevin Levine-Flandrup: Do you have any idea when that game will take place?

\r\nHayden Sharp: I'd say in a few weeks. I throw hard bullpens every 5-6 days, so I'll probably have 2-3 more of those before the game.

\r\n\r\nKevin Levine-Flandrup: In general, how interested are you in starting a professional career if it is possible?

\r\nHayden Sharp: Oh, that's my main goal right now.

\r\n\r\nKevin Levine-Flandrup: Are the Yankees aware of your number?

\r\nHayden Sharp: No, we really haven't talked about it because they've seen me pitch only one time, and that's the whole reason for the summer follow. They don't want to throw a number out there that's too low or too high, they just want to see me at my best towards the end of the summer, and then make a decision.

\r\n\r\nKevin Levine-Flandrup: Are you nervous about that aspect of it?

\r\nHayden Sharp: No, I'm not nervous because I think I've improved so much since they saw me at state, from locating my pitches to my form and mechanics – I've improved a lot. If they thought I was good enough to draft then, I think they'll definitely see good in me when I pitch at the end of the summer. I've been working hard and am giving it my best.
