Yankees vs. Blue Jays: Starting Pitchers

Comparing what the Yankees and Blue Jays have at each position in the minor leagues, we take a look at the crop of starting pitching prospects in each system. Which system is deeper? Which prospects have the most power? The highest ceilings? Take a look at this comparison between the New York and Toronto farm systems.

The Two Farm Systems: There is one big similarity between the two -- they both have very good starting pitching depth. The biggest difference between the two organizations, however, is where their greatest depth is currently located. New York's best depth right now is at the Triple-A level whereas Toronto, which might have better overall depth up and down the farm system, has their greatest collection of high-ceiling arms at the lower levels.

By now everyone on the national scene has become acquainted with left-hander Manny Banuelos and towering right-handed pitcher Dellin Betances, each of whom possess three plus big league pitches, giving them frontline big league starting stuff, but both have had command issues with their fastballs. While they will walk a few too many, they have the kind of great stuff to overcome their walk issues until they get better command.

New York's Triple-A pitching depth is not limited to just those two high-ceiling pitchers, however. Right-handers Adam Warren, boasting an above average fastball with good command and a solid three-pitch secondary mix he can also throw for strikes, David Phelps and his average to above average four-pitch big league arsenal, and D.J. Mitchell, who might have the best curveball-changeup combination in either farm system as well as one of the best moving sinking fastballs too, have some real big league talent.

Toronto's two best bets at the upper minor league levels now that Henderson Alvarez has secured a big league rotation spot are right-handers Drew Hutchison and Deck McGuire. While they don't have the immense ceilings that Banuelos and Betances have, they collectively are arguably safer bets to reach their big league ceilings as middle of the rotation starters. Hutchison is a superb command pitcher who has a great sinker-changeup-slider combination and he strikes out better than a batter per inning pitched, and McGuire, a former first round pick, also has an above average four-pitch big league arsenal, including the best slider among starters in either organization.

Shifting down to the A-ball levels, however, that's where Toronto has a bit more depth right now. Even though New York has the likes of right-handers, Jose Ramirez [who has a sky-high ceiling of his own with his 92-96 mph fastball with great command, a plus big league changeup, and a wicked slider than has shown up at times], Brett Marshall and his good sinking fastball-changeup combination, and other righties like Zach Nuding [fastball gets up to 98 mph], Mikey O'Brien who continues to put up numbers, and Shane Greene whose stuff is outstanding but has his command lagging behind, and tall lefty Nik Turley with a three-pitch big league mix, they don't have quite the upside Toronto's young low-A pitchers in 2012 possess.

Two Toronto right-handers, Noah Syndergaard and Aaron Sanchez, have potential frontline starting stuff but each have some work to do towards reaching that kind of ceiling. Syndergaard, a 6-foot-5 hurler, throws a 92-94 mph fastball that top out at 97 mph and he consistently uses his downhill plane to his advantage. The secondary pitches are not yet consistent but they've shown long-term plus potential too. Sanchez, 6-foot-4, has three pitches with plus potential but an inconsistent delivery hasn't allowed his pitches to reach their max potential just yet.

New York's version of Sanchez is right-hander Bryan Mitchell. Boasting a true plus fastball-plus curveball combination, his biggest areas of improvement are better fastball command and getting his changeup, which flashes plus potential, to be much more consistent. He too has 'ace' potential but has a lot of work to do towards reaching his potential.

Rounding out the 'big three' for Toronto at the A-ball level is left-hander Justin Nicolino. Boasting one of the best changeups in either organization, the teenager has a solid three-pitch big league mix and has the look of a quick riser through the minor leagues. In a lot of ways he resembles Manny Banuelos in his younger days with his high pitch-ability, effortless motion, and there's some potential here to increase his fastball velocity like Banuelos did.

Both systems have some pitchers with some real upside but have had their struggles recently. New York's Graham Stoneburner battled a neck injury in 2011, but he boasts a great power sinking fastball that sits 91-94 mph, an above average changeup, and a slider that flashes plus potential but it remains too inconsistent right now.

Toronto right-hander Asher Wojchiechowski, a former first round pick, has also batted inconsistencies; inconsistencies with his command and fluctuating degrees of stuff. When he's going right he can look the part of a big league pitcher with above average stuff and when he's not going right he can get hit pretty hard. Like Stoneburner, the talent is there to be a very good pitching prospect but he needs to show a little more in 2012.

What has aided the Yankees' lower level pitching depth is the acquisition of flame-throwing right-handed Jose Campos from the Seattle Mariners in the Jesus Montero trade this offseason. Able to sit 92-95 mph already and top out reportedly at 98 mph, his fastball isn't just about pure power. It gets good late life and natural tilt to, and already 6-foot-4 and still just a teenager, who knows how hard he'll eventually throw as he matures. He also reportedly throws both a curveball and changeup with plus potential, but they're too inconsistent right now to grade at out as such just yet. He immediately becomes one of the top pitching prospects for the Yankees and gives them another lower level, high-ceiling arm.

New York has some real depth at the lower levels too, highlighted by the influx of some very talented arms from last year's draft. Right-handers Jordan Cote and "Rookie" Davis have significant upside, but Cote, a northeastern native, has to get a lot of reps to get his secondary pitches going and Davis, a former position player in high school, also has a lot of upside but he too needs time to focus more on pitching to unleash the potential of his secondary pitches, including a curveball with plus potential.

Yankee left-handers Evan DeLuca, Evan Rutckyj, Daniel Camarena, and Matt Tracy all have potential above average stuff, but each has a bit of a question mark going forward. Camarena seems the most polished of the young southpaws but he doesn't throw particularly hard, sitting 89-92 mph, DeLuca was sitting 91-94 mph a year ago but nagging injuries have caused his velocity to fluctuate and he has problems throwing strikes consistently, Rutckyj throws hard with a good slider but his location is inconsistent, and Tracy, arguably potentially the best 'value' pitcher in either organization after signing for a mere $2,000, has three above average pitches but needs time to focus on just pitching after being a position player too at Ole Miss.

Toronto has some real lower level, high upside arms of their own. In fact, they collectively have a bit more upside in comparison to the Yankee hurlers at the lower levels. Venezuelan right-hander Adonys Cardona conjures up images of former top Yankee pitching prospect and current Braves pitcher Jose Vizcaino with his plus fastball, potentially plus curveball combination. However, Cardona's changeup is light years better than Vizcaino's changeup was at a similar age and so is the mental makeup, making him a better bet at the same stage in reaching his ceiling.

Left-hander Daniel Norris, widely considered the top prep left-hander in last year's draft, also has immense upside. The teenager has three above average pitches already with long-term plus potential, including a fastball, curveball, and changeup, and he also throws a slider with intriguing potential. He has future #1 or #2 type stuff, he just has to go out and prove it.

Toronto's lower level starting pitching depth is not relegated to just those two, however. Joseph Musgrove, one of last year's supplemental first round picks, is like Yankee hurler Jordan Cote in that his secondary pitches need a lot of work going forward but he's a big-bodied pitcher who throws even harder, hitting as high as 96 mph already. Right-hander Kevin Comer is perhaps blessed with the better 'now' stuff in either organization from last year's draft classes among pitchers not named Morris, and able to hit 95 mph already, he also has a very high ceiling.

There are other pitchers in both organizations with some real upside too, including New York right-handers Taylor Morton and Gabe Encinas, as well as left-hander Chaz Hebert at the lower levels, and Toronto left-handers Mitchell Taylor, Griffin Murphy, and Zak Adams, and they only add to each organization's depth of quality potential starting pitching prospects.

How Do They Compare In...

Fastballs: If it's something both farm systems boast a plethora of it's great depth of quality above average to plus big league fastballs. Everybody knows the names at the top -- New York's Dellin Betances, Manny Banuelos, Bryan Mitchell, Jose Ramirez, etc, and Toronto's Noah Syndergaard, Aaron Sanchez, Adonys Cardona, etc -- but even behind them both organizations have some real harder throwers; New York's Zach Nuding can get it up to 98 mph and newly acquired Jose Campos can hit just as high, Toronto's Joe Musgrove can get it up to 96 mph as a teenager, etc. They both have stock-piled some great arms, but New York has a slight edge here because of their higher level depth [not to mention grabbing a high-ceiling arm like Campos at the lower levels] whereas Toronto's greater collection of power arms, which arguably is a bit deeper overall, are at the lower levels. Advantage: Yankees

Secondary Pitches: Again, outside of the top names ranked below, where New York can come close to matching Toronto's lower level pitching depth is in the secondary pitches department, especially if Campos' secondary pitches come along as well as scouts believe it will. Matt Tracy also has a great curveball-changeup combination as does Daniel Camarena, and that helps offset the influx of quality secondary arsenals of Kevin Comer, Justin Nicolino, and Aaron Sanchez. Advantage: Even

Command: The lower levels are more of a wash command-wise. Justin Nicolino, Kevin Comer, and Mitchell Taylor are all good command pitchers, but the Yankees can match that with the likes of Daniel Camarena, Matt Tracy, and Taylor Morton, not to mention Campos can reportedly command his fastball very well. While the Yankees have some terrific arms, some of their better high-ceiling pitchers, most notably Banuelos and Betances, have had their fair share of command issues in recent years. Conversely, Toronto's higher-level starting pitchers like Drew Hutchison and Deck McGuire are much better command pitchers at this point. The safer bet is to go with the more sure things at this point and the Blue Jays have a bit more depth in this department. Advantage: Blue Jays.

Overall Potential: As previously noted, while the Jays have some guys like Hutchison and McGuire closing in on the big leagues, the Yankees clearly have the better upper minor league level starting pitching depth right now, boasting a Triple-A rotation that resembles a quality big league starting staff in a lot of ways; Banuelos, Betances, Warren, Phelps, and Mitchell. And while the Yankees have a bunch of quality starting pitching prospects coming up behind them, highlighted by Campos and Bryan Mitchell, Toronto has a bit more high-ceiling depth at this point at the lower levels with the likes of Sanchez, Syndergaard, Nicolino, Norris, and Cardona. Their depth at the lower levels is large enough to overcome the depth of the Yankees at the higher levels to make this pretty much a wash. This could change, however, should Yankees rehab pitchers, right-hander Jairo Heredia and left-hander Jeremy Bleich, return to their normal selves in 2012. Advantage: Even.

Highest Ceilings: Dellin Betances (Yankees), Manny Banuelos (Yankees), Jose Campos (Yankees), Adonys Cardona (Blue Jays), Daniel Norris (Blue Jays), Bryan Mitchell (Yankees), Aaron Sanchez (Blue Jays), Noah Syndergaard (Blue Jays), Jose Ramirez (Yankees), Kevin Comer (Blue Jays), Deck McGuire (Blue Jays).

Best Fastballs: Dellin Betances (Yankees), Noah Syndergaard (Blue Jays), Manny Banuelos (Yankees), Jose Campos (Yankees), Adonys Cardona (Blue Jays)

Best Curveballs: Dellin Betances (Yankees), Bryan Mitchell (Yankees), Aaron Sanchez (Blue Jays), Manny Banuelos (Yankees), Daniel Norris (Blue Jays)

Best Changeups: Dellin Betances (Yankees), D.J. Mitchell (Yankees), Manny Banuelos (Yankees), Justin Nicolino (Blue Jays), Drew Hutchison (Blue Jays)

Best Sliders: Deck McGuire (Blue Jays), Drew Hutchison (Blue Jays), Shane Greene (Yankees), David Phelps (Yankees), Jose Ramirez (Yankees).
