Yanks Get Hammered By D-Rays In First Game

Jeff Weaver (3-6) continued his struggles against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Weaver was tagged for six runs in just five innings as the Devil Rays pounded out a season-high 11 runs to beat the Yankees 11-2 in the first game of their Tuesday double header.

The Devil Rays didn't waste any time knocking around the Yankee starter. Carl Crawford led off the game with a single to left, then moved to third on Rocco Baldelli's double. Aubrey Huff hit a fly ball to left that allowed Crawford to tag up and score to give Tampa the 1-0 lead after just three batters.

Weaver appeared to settle down from there, and a solo homerun from Jason Giambi in the bottom of the first inning erased the deficit.

Neither team scored a run until the fifth inning when Tampa broke the game wide open. Javier Valentin led off the inning with a single, then with two outs, Weaver fell apart. Baldelli singled and Huff doubled to clear the bases. Travis Lee then launched a two-run homerun into the right-field upper deck. Ben Grieve followed Lee with another homerun to right field and all of a sudden, the Yankees were down 6-1.

Jeremi Gonzalez (3-2) dominated the Yankees for six innings. The right-hander allowed just one hit in his six innings of work, the Giambi homerun. He also struck out five and walked five while grabbing the win.

After Weaver left the game though, the Devil Rays didn't stop hitting. Sterling Hitchcock relieved Weaver and didn't fare any better. He allowed five more runs in the seventh inning capped by a three-run shot to Marlon Anderson – who had four hits in the game.

Weaver took the loss, allowing ten hits and six runs in five innings. He also struck out one and walked a batter.

The Yankees tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth when Jorge Posada scored on Raul Mondesi's fielder's choice. But it was far too little, far too late as the Devil Rays cruised to the victory.

The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Yankees, who were coming off of a sweep of the Cardinals. The second game of the doubleheader will start at 7:05. David Wells (8-2, 3.63) will look to erase the memory of the first game for the Yankees. Dewon Brazelton (1-5, 6.75) will take the hill for Tampa Bay.
