Underwater Subways

The second game of the Subway Series was postponed after less than four innings due to rain. The Yankees had jumped out to a 4-3 lead, but were in trouble when the umpires called the game. The game will be made up on Saturday, June 28th as part of a day-night, home-and-home double header, similar to what took place in 2000.

The Yankees took advantage of some sloppy Mets defense in the first inning, scoring two runs on two errors. Jeromy Burnitz and Ty Wigginton both homered for the Mets, who had put two runners on with no outs against Mike Mussina in the bottom of the fourth.

Tom Glavine was a late scratch from the game. He was announced originally as the starting pitcher, but after a 70-minute rain delay before the first pitch, Jeremy Griffiths came out to pitch.

There had already been 14 hits in the game when the tarp came out for the last time, and all of them were lost. Among them were two hits from the slumping Todd Zeile - including a homerun - who will have to wait for another day to break out of his slump.

Griffiths hit Derek Jeter with a pitch in the second inning. The pitch came in high and tight and got Jeter above the wrist. Jeter looked to be in pain, but stayed in the game and expects to play Sunday.

The final game of the series will take place at 8:05 pm on Sunday. David Wells (9-2, 3.40) will pitch as scheduled for the Yankees, and he will face either Jae Weong Seo (5-2, 2.66) or Glavine (5-7, 4.52).
