Orioles Rough Up Mussina, End Yanks Win Streak

Mike Mussina was out-pitched by Baltimore's Rodrigo Lopez on Tuesday night. The Orioles got to their former ace early and forced him out of the game in the third inning as they stopped the Yankees' eight-game win streak by a score of 7-3.

For Mussina, it was his shortest outing in almost two years. He lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing a run in the second before getting in over his head in the third.

Mussina allowed a run-scoring double to Jeff Conine, then walked Jay Gibbons to load the bases. Tony Batista grounded out to plate another run, but with two outs B.J. Surhoff hit a two-run single that gave Baltimore a 5-0 lead.

Deivi Cruz singled and Geronimo Gil walked to reload the bases and force Mussina from the game. Sterling Hitchcock cam on and got Brian Roberts to pop out to stop the bleeding.

Baltimore didn't look back, scoring two more runs – including a solo homerun from Melvin Mora – to take 7-0 lead after the sixth inning

Meanwhile, Rodrigo Lopez was pitching a shutout, scattering nine hits through the sixth inning. But the Yankees finally got on the board in the seventh. Karim Garcia and Alfonso Soriano led off the inning with back-to-back singles. With runners at the corners and two outs, Ruben Sierra hit a line drive back to the mound that Lopez couldn't handle. Garcia scored from third and Lopez was chased from the game.

New York pulled a little closer in the next inning on Karim Garcia's two-run homer, his second in as many days. But it was too little too late as Baltimore went on to win.

Mussina (10-5) took the loss, snapping a three-game win streak. In total, he allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks through 2 2/3 innings, striking out two batters. Sterling Hitchcock continued his troubles, allowing two runs – one earned – in three innings of relief.

Lopez (2-4) got the victory, his first since June 15, allowing just one run on 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings. Lopez struck out six Yankees. Hector Carrasco allowed Garcia's homerun in the eighth.

The rubber match of the three-game set is on Wednesday at 3:05 pm. David Wells (10-2, 3.40) will take the mound for the Yankees to face Baltimore's Jason Johnson (6-3, 3.80).
