Lone Star Dugout Video: Nick Martinez (7/12)
Playing his first full professional season, right-hander Nick Martinez has posted a 4.47 ERA in 28 games (17 starts) with Single-A Hickory. He has logged 102.2 innings while yielding 105 hits, walking 31, and striking out 95.
The Texas Rangers selected Martinez in the 18th round of the 2011 MLB Draft as a pitcher. A three-year starting infielder at Fordham University, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Martinez made only 15 total relief appearances during his collegiate career.
Despite Martinez's lack of experience on the mound, it didn't take long for him to establish himself as a prospect last summer. He showed strong stuff between the two short-season levels while posting a 2.30 ERA over 58.2 innings in 2011.
The 22-year-old hurler began this season in the Single-A Hickory bullpen before transitioning into the starting rotation in May. While he's had his ups and downs, his overall stuff has been good, and he's a good athlete who shows a feel for pitching. A more detailed scouting report––along with an interview––will be posted (and linked in this story) in the coming days.
Over his two most recent starts, Martinez has tossed 12 innings of four-hit shutout ball, walking one and striking out seven.
The following video comes from Martinez's July 12 start against the Lakewood BlueClaws, Single-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. In the game, he yielded two runs (one earned) in five innings, giving up five hits, walking three, and striking out seven.
The video shows Martinez during the third and fifth innings––the two frames in which he surrendered a run.
