Cubs April 28 Minor League Recap

Iowa blasted a season-high four homers, including one by Brian Bogusevic (pictured), as part of the 13-hit attack at Omaha and Ben Carhart knocked in three runs to lead Daytona to victory. Kane County and Tennessee were rained out.

Iowa10, Omaha 6

Brian Bogusevic drove in three runs with three hits, including a homer, to help lead Iowa (7-14) over Omaha (14-8).

At the Plate…..Iowa got 13 hits and drew eight walks in the victory as Bogusevic and Brent Lillibridge had three hits and a homer. Logan Watkins (2-6) led off the game with a triple and scored on Brett Jackson's RBI groundout. Jackson knocked in three runs, two coming on his first homer of the season. Ryan Sweeney crushed his sixth homer, a two-run shot, for a 3-0 Iowa lead in the first. Brent Lillibridge blasted a solo shot in the sixth, one of three hits on the day. Ian Stewart is now hitting .094 at Iowa but he did walk three times and scored twice. Catcher J.C Boscan had two hits and is hitting .319 for Iowa.

On the Mound….. Maybe since Brooks Raley made five starts for Chicago last year it seems like he's been around for awhile but he's only in his first full season at Iowa, having started last year at Tennessee, making eight starts before being promoted to Iowa (14 starts at AAA). The left-hander didn't have his best stuff Sunday at Omaha but after being staked to a 7-0 lead managed six innings. After only walking four in his first 22.1 innings, Raley walked three on Sunday, quickly adding up his pitch count. He gave up two runs with two outs in the fourth and then allowed his first two homers of the season in the sixth, both solo shots. LHP Hisanori Takahashi was signed as a free agent in December of 2012 after pitching 51 games last year with the Angels (42) and Pirates (9). The 38-year-old pitched for the Mets (2010) and Angels 2011. He worked a perfect seventh with one strikeout and has now allowed one earned run (3 games) in 3.1IP. RHP Zach Putnam appeared in his eighth game and after two bad outings against Albuquerque to start the season, has pitched well allowing just one run in nine innings. RHP Rafael Dollis allowed a two-run homer in the ninth in his one inning of work. Dollis has pitched in seven games and allowed three earned runs in 6.2 innings.

Daytona 7, Palm Beach 2

Ben Carhart had three hits and drove in three runs and Javier Baez hit his fifth homer to lead Daytona (11-12) over Palm Beach (13-9).

At the Plate: Daytona coaxed eight walks and had 11 hits as they had runners on base nearly every inning pushing seven runs across. They also stole four bases. Carhart had the first of his three two-out RBI singles in the first and Daytona added three runs in the second on a RBI single from Tim Saunders and a two-run homer from Baez. Heads up base running by Saunders and John Andereoli resulted in Saunders stealing home in the fifth. Saunders and Baez finished with two hits. Dustin Geiger (.310) walked three times and doubled. Jorge Soler had the day off.

On the Mound: P.J. Francescon made his fifth start of the season and minus two starts against Tampa (8 IP, 16H, 13R) he has allowed one earned run in 10 innings. The right-hander only allowed four Palm Beach hits in six innings, his longest out of the season. He walked two, fanned five and gave up two earned runs, including a solo homer. Austin Reed had struggled this season as evident by his 13.50 ERA but he pitched a scoreless inning on Sunday but it didn't come without incident. After a one-out error by Baez, his tenth of the season, the Cardinals loaded the bases but Reed fanned the next two hitters to end the threat. LHP Frank Del Valle got out of the eighth after a walk but allowed a two-run homer in the ninth. His ERA is now 2.53 in 10.2 IP and his line Sunday was (2IP, 3H 2ER, 1BB, 3K).

Kane County

Kane County had their eighth game of the season canceled at Lake County on Sunday and will be made up as a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 5 P.M. CST. It will be the Cougars fourth DH.

For the second straight day Tennessee was rained out with Pensacola. The game will be made up as a doubleheader (two seven inning games) on Monday beginning at noon EST time. One of the games postponed will not be made up and will be canceled since Pensacola and Tennessee don't play again in 2013.
