This tentative roster of 24 includes eight freshly-drafted players here in 2013. Four of the eight are new signees, still formally unannounced by the Cardinals organization. That likely signals completion of physical examinations to be scheduled upon arrival is the final formality.
Four new signees
The four not announced previously are eighth-rounder, pitcher Andrew Pierce of Southern Miss, 20th-rounder Chase Brookshire of Belmont University, 23rd-round catcher Alex DeLeon from the University of Kansas and 32nd-rounder Kyle Webb, a right-hander hurler from Elon University. All four were seniors in college this spring.
Four prior "new" signees
Three of the other four 2013 draftees on the Spikes are pitchers – sixth-rounder Jimmy Reed, ninth-rounder Nick Petree and 39th-rounder Kevin Herget. Rounding out the group is Petree's former Missouri State teammate, catcher Luke Voit (22nd round). Their signings were announced either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week.
Looking at the make up of the remainder of the roster, seven of the 24 new Spikes are players who finished 2012 with State College and eight others are from Johnson City's Appalachian League playoff club last year. There is also pitcher Mitch Harris, who returned to military duty after 2012 extended spring training and has yet to make his pro debut.
Johnson City promotions
Between last season and now, most of these last two groups of players already either had fill-in roles or trials with Palm Beach or Peoria, the next two rungs in the minor league hierarchy. Kelly is probably the most prominent.
News flash: Three more coming
Late-breaking news from Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. She says the Cardinals are nearing overslot deals with three players. They are 10th-rounder, shortstop Malik Collymore, 11th-rounder, right-handed pitcher Steven Farinaro and 12th-rounder, outfielder Ricardo Batista. All three are high-schoolers, so would not start at State College.
Who is where?
The State College roster page here on the main site is accurate. I am probably not going to refresh the roster matrix until all three short-season clubs are set. That could be another week.
There are 25 names listed on the roster, not 24, as I think left-handed pitcher Ben Freeman should be there, as well. I included him at least temporarily with a designation of "DL?".
As a reminder, not listed on any team roster at this time are the organization's top three signees – Marco Gonzales, Rob Kaminsky and Oscar Mercado. Like Pierce, Brookshire, DeLeon and Webb, their signings have not been formally announced by the Cardinals. It is worth noting that both Class-A Peoria and A-Advanced Palm Beach are currently playing two players short.
