Beyond The Top 50 Prospects

We had over 80 players considered for our Top 50 Yankee Prospects rankings. For those who barely missed the "Top 50", they have not been forgotten. As we take a look at the near misses we'll analyze how close they came, where they might rank next season and why they missed the list altogether. Now, let's look "Beyond the Top 50."

SS, Carmen Angelini: This former bonus baby back in 2007 finally had a full healthy season after missing the previous three years with significant injuries, including hip surgery, a broken wrist, and a broken ankle. His tools are merely average, including power and speed, and he is still making the swing adjustment after so much time off, but his makeup is through the roof and he is a solid defender at shortstop. He already might be a more reliable and safer backup shortstop option than Eduardo Nunez.

OF, Austin Aune: Physically there's a world of talent here. He's a strong kid with good bat speed but he's really lacking in confidence right now even after making the shift from shortstop to the outfield in 2013. He hit just .192 for the GCL Yankees this year and struck out a whopping 72 times in just 41 games. He needs a plan at the plate and more confidence when he steps into the batter's box. He's just too gifted not to turn things around soon.

3B, Dante Bichette Jr.: The former first round pick has Top 50 talent but he's getting dangerously close to having his production slip to the point where guys behind him at the same position are beginning to pass him, guys like Eric Jagielo and Miguel Andujar to name just a couple. The home run production increased from 2012 but his average dipped significantly despite having to repeat the same level, not a great sign, and the defense hasn't really progressed much either. He has the talent to get back up in the rankings but now he has to produce on the field results.

LHP, Jeremy Bleich: This former supplemental first round pick had a very good first full season back after missing nearly two years from shoulder surgery. The stuff is nearly back to pre-surgery form, averaging 90-92 mph with his fastball, showing a plus curveball once again, and his normally reliable changeup. He even posted a solid 2.76 ERA in Double-A Trenton this year. However, he's a guy without a specific role right now. He was better against right-handers in 2013 and until he gets lefties out more consistently he's kind of stuck in bullpen limbo long-term. Don't rule out a possible return to the rotation and that is where he would have the most value if he can get his command better.

1B/OF, Chris Breen: At 6-foot-3 and a rock solid 215 pounds, last year's 12th round pick out of high school already has some intriguing power potential. He hit five home runs for the GCL Yankees this season and proved to be better in the clutch. However, he has a little too much swing and miss right now, and he's a marginal athlete who doesn't offer much in the way of defense so he will have to hit his way up the ladder. And in order to do that he'll need to improve upon his .214 average this season.

3B/1B, Drew Bridges: This year's 20th round pick out of high school physically resembles current top prospect Greg Bird, standing 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds. There's plus power potential here and he shows some advanced patience at the plate, but the bat is a little raw right now and defensively there are some questions as to whether or not he can stick at third base. He's most likely a first baseman or corner outfielder long-term and he'll need to produce like Bird to get his value up.

LHP, Nestor Cortes: This year's 36th round pick out of high school has some serious upside. Built like fellow lefty Daniel Camarena, Cortes is similar in other ways. He doesn't throw very hard either, sitting mostly 87-91 mph right now, but his fastball has some late life to it and some natural tailing action. He has a very good changeup too and a curveball that, while quite inconsistent right now, has some long-term potential. The delivery is fluid too. Should he develop some more arm strength he could really move up high in the rankings down the road.

RHP, Jordan Cote: A victim of the ever-increasing Yankee prospect depth, the 2011 third round pick has some real talent and the production to back it up, boasting a career ERA under 1.00 so far with a five to one strikeout to walk ratio. However, while the changeup is already a big league offering, the fastball still resides in the big league average realm and the breaking ball, while okay for the lower levels, still needs more fine-tuning going forward. He didn't miss the Top 50 by much this year and a little more stuff-wise and he should be back in there again.

SS, Claudio Custodio: He can run like the wind and he plays an excellent defensive shortstop but even before a pulled quad relegated him to just 43 games with the Charleston RiverDogs this season he had begun to play some more second base. And now with the likes of Abiatal Avelino and Wade coming up behind him, the competition is getting even more fierce at the position. He needs a return to health and a step up in production pretty quickly, but there's definite Top 50 talent here if things break right.

3B, Matt Duran: The 2011 fourth round pick has some good bat speed, above average power potential, and he's pretty solid defensively at third. He seemingly had made the adjustment offensively to use the whole field more in Extended Spring Training this year but a pair of injuries derailed his season. A return to health is much needed and he'll need to prove his adjustments are working at the higher levels, but there's still some significant upside here if things pan out.

SS, Anderson Feliz: Another year, another injury plagued season for the Dominican native. He simply can't stay on the field long enough to continue his development and it's a real shame because he has plus bat speed, plus running speed, good defensive instincts, and solid power for a middle infielder. Until he gets healthy enough to play an entire season though, he is simply on the outside radar looking in at this point. He's a legit Top 30 guy when healthy.

OF, Dustin Fowler: This year's 18th round pick out of high school very well may be next year's 'pick to click'. He swings an extremely live bat with intriguing long-term power potential, he shows good athleticism, a good plan at the plate, and an ability to make adjustments. In a lot of ways he compares favorably to current outfield prospect Jake Cave [albeit not as polished a hitter as Cave] and he should be a Top 50 mainstay for years to come after he gets some more experience.

LHP, Caleb Frare: Last year's 11th round pick has some real arm strength from the left side and he turned a quick corner in his overall pitch-ability in his debut season last year before succumbing to Tommy John surgery. Both of his secondary pitches have long-term potential too but for now he's going to have to develop in a system where a lot of lefties, including some young ones too, are starting to make some noise. He should not be overlooked though.

LHP, Chaz Hebert: The 2011 27th round pick has made some steady progress with his game over the past two years. He's seen his fastball velocity improve to the 90-92 mph range, seen steady improvement with curveball and changeup, and he's physically gotten stronger. He too has some intriguing upside but for now his game a little more raw than others that reside in the Top 50. Make no mistake, however, he should eventually get back in the rankings once he continues to refine his game.

RHP, Jairo Heredia: When healthy he's a legit Top 20 type prospect in the Yankee farm system, boasting two plus secondary pitches with his curveball-changeup combination, and supreme command of a fastball that at minimum sits big league average. However, his fastball velocity has fluctuated in recent years after shoulder surgery and he has battled being able to stay on the field for any length of time. If he can get back to being 100 percent healthy, an iffy proposition these days, he is a huge wild card for the Yankees. That's the only thing lacking in his game -- health!

OF, Ericson Leonora: It took the Venezuelan native four years but he finally got to the long-season leagues in 2013 after battling a number of injuries and position changes over the years. He has some intriguing long-term power potential, great bat speed, and some legitimate athleticism. He just turned 21 years old at the end of August too so while it seems like he's been around forever he is still not too old for his levels. He has a chance to develop into a Nelson Cruz type bat as a late-bloomer, he has the kind of power potential if things break right. He just can't afford anymore injuries or missteps going forward.

LHP, Omar Luis: This Cuban defector signed with the Yankees for $4 million in July of 2012 and finally made his professional debut this year after sitting out of baseball for the better part of two years. That long layoff sure showed too as his command was spotty at best. Stuff-wise he's pretty legit, sitting 91-94 mph with his fastball and boasting a curveball-changeup combination that flashes plus potential, but he needs to get better at throwing strikes and getting ahead in counts more consistently. Should he do that he has the talent to soar up the rankings.

RHP, Joey Maher: The 2011 38th round pick is yet another young hurler who has seen steady progress over his first two seasons but is still just a tick behind others at the current time. His once non-existent changeup has become a great pitch and his curveball flashes plus potential at times, but his bread and butter is a low-90s sinker with great movement. Like Cote and Hebert, he too has a very high ceiling if he can get things clicking sooner rather than later.

OF, Nathan Mikolas: Last year's third round pick initially struggled in his debut season but followed it up with a solid sophomore campaign in 2013, hitting .256 with 18 extra-base hits for the GCL Yankees. There's still a little too much swing and miss, and he is a pronounced pull-hitter at the current time, one who will need to use the whole field more going forward, but the fact is he is progressing and making adjustments. And with his power potential, that's a good thing.

OF/3B, Ronnier Mustelier: The 29-year old Cuban native is far too old to be considered an actual "prospect" but that doesn't mean he can't have a big league impact of some kind. Merely serviceable defensively at both third and left field, the right-handed batter can flat out hit. There's not much power in the bat, definitely below average for a corner guy, but he makes consistent contact and gives good at-bats. He could prove to be a good bat off the bench if the Yankees decide to go that route.

RHP, Zach Nuding: The 2010 30th round pick has some significant upside to him. Physically resembling Joba Chamberlain, Nuding can bring the heat too in short stints, dialing it up as high as 98 mph when he has been used in short-relief stints. The Yankees have used him primarily as a starting pitcher, however, in an effort to give him more time to work on developing his slider and changeup. Neither secondary pitch is a plus offering right now but he's steadily improving, especially with the slider. He could be the 2014 version of Preston Claiborne as a non-Top 50 guy who could surprise some folks if given the opportunity.

1B, Reymond Nunez: For years we've touted the power of Nunez and his on the field power production never came close to matching his actual power potential, but he took a much needed step forward in 2013, clubbing a career-high 15 home runs for the Charleston RiverDogs when his career seemingly had come close to an end. He's 23 years old now so he needs to move quickly but he at least is starting to show some of that vast potential.

RHP, Mikey O'Brien: There's nothing sexy about this former 9th round pick back in 2008; he's rather small, standing just 5-foot-11, and he doesn't have overpowering stuff as a starting pitcher. However, he has been the model of consistency coming up through the minor leagues and uses a trio of big league average to above average pitches to keep hitters off-balance. He's also shown plus fastball velocity in short relief stints so he also gives the Yankees some options. He probably won't ever be an impact pitcher nor does he have a sky-high ceiling, but he's one of the more reliably consistent arms around.

RHP, David Palladino: This year's fifth round pick out of Howard Junior College has some significant upside. Standing 6-foot-8 and weighing 235 pounds, he has shown an average big league fastball that has room to get better as he smooths out his mechanics. He's also shown some decent secondary pitches but for him it will all be about his mechanics going forward, not unlike it was for former top prospect Andrew Brackman. He's a long-term project who might initially struggle but the ceiling is too vast to not track his development closely.

UT, Jose Pirela: Pirela is a producer, not a toolsy player necessarily. His tools grade out as average at best -- power, speed, defense -- but he's a gamer in every sense of the word and he simply produces solidly in every facet of the game. His best defensive position is second base by far but he can still man third base, left field, and shortstop if need be, and he boasts advanced plate discipline and consistently gives good at-bats. He could be a productive bench player in the big leagues for somebody.

RHP, Angel Rincon: Stuff-wise and control-wise he resembles a young Ivan Nova type, albeit a smaller version; he has three pitches that flash plus potential on any given day and he is a natural strike-thrower, but like Nova he's going to have a bit of a learning curve at the lower levels learning pitch sequencing and how to set up batters properly. In most year's he would be a sure-fire Top 50 prospect but for now his game is a bit too raw in comparison to others.

1B, Kyle Roller: The former 8th round pick back in 2010 has averaged 17 home runs per year the past three seasons and chipped in with solid averages. He strikes out a bit too much and he will never be a consistent high-average hitter but what he does have is plus pull-side power from the left side and with the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium he could see his home run totals spike if given the opportunity.

OF, Ravel Santana: Arguably the most physically gifted athlete ever to find residence in the 'Beyond The Top 50', Santana, much like fellow Dominican native Anderson Feliz, simply can't stay healthy long enough to get some much needed development time. He destroyed his ankle two years ago and struggled upon his return, and this year missed the entire season with a broken arm. He has plus power potential, plus speed, and a rocket for an arm, but he has yet to have an opportunity to make some much needed adjustments in refining his swing. He could be back in the Top Ten someday but for now he and his health are wait and see propositions.

1B, Matt Snyder: Last year's tenth round pick is yet another in a litany of injured players who has some serious long-term potential but simply can't stay on the field. He missed pretty much the entire 2013 season with both a broken wrist and a torn hamstring, but when he's healthy has arguably the best plate discipline in the farm system. Throw in the fact that he added 40 pounds of muscle last offseason and now physically resembles Peter O'Brien's twin [he's that big], he's a true 'sleeper' prospect if he can return to health.

SS, Tyler Wade: Along with Fowler, Wade, this year's fourth round pick, barely missed out on the Top 50 rankings in his debut season. A gifted defensive shortstop with advanced patience and plate discipline, and good bat control, the only real weakness in his game is that -- his weakness. He's not very physically strong and has some room to fill out his frame, but if he could gain some much needed power to go along with the other strong areas of his game, including leadership, he could be a real find for the Yankees.

RHP, Philip Walby: Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 215 pounds, this year's 12th round pick out of San Diego State University brings an intriguing combination of size, power, and deception. He sits 92-94 mph with his fastball with good downward plane and his herky-jerky delivery allows his fastball play even higher as batters can't get a good read on it. His secondary pitches need more work, his slider in particular, and he'll need to have better fastball command and get ahead of hitters more consistently, but there's some serious upside if things come together for him.

\r\n1B, Matt Snyder: Last year's tenth round pick is yet another in a litany of injured players who has some serious long-term potential but simply can't stay on the field.
\r\n
\r\nSS, Tyler Wade: Along with Fowler, Wade, this year's fourth round pick, barely missed out on the Top 50 rankings in his debut season.
\r\n
\r\nRHP, Philip Walby: Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 215 pounds, this year's 12th round pick out of San Diego State University brings an intriguing combination of size, power, and deception.
