Yankees vs. Red Sox: Outfield Prospects

Comparing what the Yankees and Red Sox have at each position in the minor leagues, we take a look at the crop of outfield prospects in each system. Which system is deeper? Which prospects have the most power? The highest ceilings? Take a look at this comparison between the two rival AL East farm systems.

The Two Farm Systems: The depth of outfield prospects for each organization is clearly going in completely different directions. Boston, who wasn't exactly overflowing in outfield prospect depth to begin the 2013 season anyway, traded away Brandon Jacobs [to the White Sox in the Matt Thorton deal] and Jeremy Hazlebaker [to the Dodgers in the Alex Castellanos deal] last season. Meanwhile, even though the Yankees lost Ravel Santana and Melky Mesa, two very high-ceiling outfield prospects, they offset that with more depth added through the draft and International free agent signing period.

Boston has a pair of would-be big league ready outfielders in Jackie Bradley Jr. and Bryce Brent, both of whom have logged a significant amount of Triple-A time. Bradley Jr., Boston's first round pick out of the University of South Carolina in 2011, had a somewhat pedestrian sophomore professional campaign in 2013, hitting just .275 with ten home runs and seven stolen bases after hitting a combined .315 with 42 doubles, nine home runs, and 24 stolen bases between high-A Salem and Double-A Portland in 2012.

While his 2013 numbers might not exactly prove it, walking just 41 times and striking out 75 times, he does have great strike zone discipline, enough to project as an eventual .300 hitter. However, the rest of his tools rate out as average at best, including power, speed, and even his defense in centerfield, although that can tick to the above average realm given his steady play. 'Steady' is the optimal word to describe him -- there isn't a whole lot of ceiling here -- but he reached the big leagues in 2013 [.189, three home runs in 37 games], he's still rookie eligible, and he heads into 2014 with a real chance at securing a starting gig now that Jacoby Ellsbury has switched alliances.

Brentz on the other hand, while not blessed with great speed or defense, has a bit more ceiling to his game. A first round pick in the 2010 draft, he missed a significant portion of the 2013 season with some nagging injuries but still managed to club 17 home runs in just 326 at-bats for Triple-A Pawtucket, matching his home run total between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket the year before. He has plus power potential and plus arm strength, and he projects to be at least an average hitter. He's a slugger, plain and simple.

The Yankees have their own big league tested outfield prospect in Zoilo Almonte. Like Bradley, Almonte is still rookie eligible for the 2014 season and he held his own in a 106 at-bat trial in the Bronx last season, hitting a respectable .236. He's not nearly the safe bet that Bradley is projection-wise, but the ceiling is a bit better because he has above average power potential. However, for the time being anyway, he appears to be a reserve outfielder at best for the Yankees until he can show more at the big league level.

Outside of Bradley and Brentz, however, the Red Sox don't have a lot of high ceiling potential outfield prospects in the long-season leagues. Soon to be 26-year old outfielder Alex Hassan [.321, four home runs for Triple-A Pawtucket last season] projects best as a reserve outfielder, so that leaves both Henry Ramos and Keury De La Cruz as their next best long-season options.

Ramos, a switch-hitter out of Puerto Rico, hit a respectable .252 with 27 doubles and 12 home runs for high-A Salem last season and seems poised to hit the Double-A level as a 22-year old this season. He shows some patience at the plate and average speed, and the power, while average presently, does have above average to borderline plus potential. He is Zoilo Almonte in a lot of ways.

De La Cruz, a Dominican native, has a similar skillset as Ramos, although he bats exclusively from the left side. He hit 36 doubles for high-A Salem last year with nine home runs, and like Ramos, the ceiling is intriguing in Almonte fashion but there are considerable stretches where the production isn't there, enough to have some similar long-term question marks.

The Yankees on the other hand have a handful of outfield prospects in the long-season leagues who have equally as many question marks but considerably higher ceilings, including Slade Heathcott, Mason Williams, Tyler Austin, and Ramon Flores. All four, while quite young for their levels, each had somewhat disappointing 2013 campaigns.

Heathcott, New York's first round pick back in 2009, is arguably the highest ceiling outfield prospect in either organization. Blessed with above average power potential, plus speed, and plus defense, the former high school football standout is still working to bring his great tools together. He hit a respectable .261 with eight home runs as a 22-year old in Double-A last season, but the production hasn't come close to his tool-set. Still, the fact that he amassed more than 300 at-bats in a season for the first time in his injury-plagued career is a good sign.

Williams, New York's fourth round pick in 2010, has a very disappointing 2013 season, hitting just a combined .245 with four home runs and 15 stolen bases between high-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton after hitting a combined .298 with eleven home runs and 20 stolen base the year prior. He battled illness and subsequent weight fluctuation all season though, and he still has a huge ceiling. The now 22-year old needs a big bounce-back season.

Tyler Austin is also in need of a bounce-back season. He followed up his .322, 35 double, 17 home run, 23-stolen base season in 2012 with an injury-marred .265-17-6-4 season in Double-A last season. He needs a return to health more than anything but there is still above average to plus power potential here, as well as above average hitting potential. The ceiling is huge here too, but like Heathcott and Williams, he needs a return to production.

Flores, signed out of Venezuela back in 2008, doesn't have nearly the same high ceiling as the aforementioned Yankee trio but he has also proven to be the most consistent contributor of the bunch. He hit .260 with six doubles and a team-leading 77 walks in Double-A as a 21-year old last season. His progress remains steady and there's more power in the tank than pundits realize.

Giving the Yankees far better long-season league outfield depth are Ben Gamel and Jake Cave, two players with ultra-competitive drive, a real knack for hitting, above average speed, and enough question marks about their long-term home run power potential that neither are slam dunks as eventual potential big league starting outfielders just yet. Both are primo extra-base hitters right now who just need to get a few more balls to carry over the fence because the rest of their games project to be big league ready. How far the home run power comes for each is something that will simply need to play out.

Perhaps the biggest upper-level wild card outfield prospect in either organization is New York's Ronnier Mustelier. The Cuban defector, now 29 years old, is a "prospect" only because he has yet to reach the big leagues. While there isn't much upside given his advanced age, it doesn't mean he can't provide some short-term value. He can flat out-hit, shows very good plate discipline and a knack for hitting the gaps, but the home run power potential is quite limited. The exact same can be said for fellow Cuban defector Adonis Garcia, who will turn 29 years old by the start of the 2014 campaign.

Boston has some intriguing lower-level outfield prospects in the form of Manuel Margot, Bryan Hudson, and Nick Longhi. Margot, signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2011 for $800,000, hit a respectable .270 with 18 stolen bases in his first taste of pro ball in the United States last season for short-season Lowell. He has advanced plate discipline, above average running speed, above average bat speed, and the ability to stick in center. His power potential, however, is borderline average. He projects as an eventual number two type hitter down the road.

Longhi [drafted in the 30th round but received a $440,000 signing bonus] and Hudson [drafted in the 15th round] were both selected in last year's draft out of high school and both offer some long-term promise. At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Longhi, a right-handed batter, has the look of a potential slugger who can could hit for average too, and Hudson, while not possessing nearly the same power potential, is a better runner.

The Yankees combat Boston's new influx of outfield talent with some high-ceiling outfielders of their own, including last year's first round pick Aaron Judge, 11th round pick Kendall Coleman, 18th round pick Dustin Fowler, and top International signing Leonardo Molina.

Standing 6-foot-7, Judge, a former Fresno State University product, physically resembles New Orleans Saints' tight end Jimmy Graham as a monstrous athlete with real agility. His power potential is arguably the highest in either organization but he's not just a slugger -- he can field his position well and has some speed too. He sat out his debut season with a pulled quad so it remains to be seen how he'll handle professional pitching.

Coleman and Fowler, two quick-twitch, left-handed bats out of high school last season, offer some intriguing long-term potential. Both are very athletic, both have average to above average speed, and both have average or better long-term power potential. Coleman, the bigger of the two, could take some time to develop in particular, but both have significant ceilings.

Molina kind of compares to Boston's Margot in some respects; like Margot he doesn't have plus power [although Molina projects to have above average power potential], but he too shows advanced plate discipline, an ability to stick in centerfield, and above average speed. Molina also has tremendous mental makeup for a 16-year old.

The Yankees have even more depth, however, including the likes of Chris Breen, Nathan Mikolas, and Austin Aune, all of whom were 2012 draft picks out of high school, and Venezuelan native Ericson Leonora.

Breen, a 12th round pick, has size and power, enough to project as potential slugger down the road. More of a lumbering guy speed-wise, his long-term value is tied in his bat and he hit just .214 in the Gulf Coast League last season. There's a lot of ceiling here, but a lot of work to do as well.

The same goes for Mikolas, a third round pick, and Aune, the 2012 second round pick. Both are left-handed hitters who may take some time to develop but both offer intriguing ceilings. Mikolas in particular has long-term above average power potential but, a pull-hitter right now, he's working on using the whole field more. Aune, a former shortstop, is not only learning a new position but he has really struggled with the bat thus far, hitting just .192 last season. He too has a big ceiling but a lot of work to do towards tapping his potential.

Leonora might be the most intriguing lower-level outfield prospect in either organization simply because he has a sky-high ceiling but has been unable to remain healthy the past few years. Signed back in 2008, he has just 139 long-season league at-bats to his credit but there's above average power potential here, plus bat speed, and some natural athleticism. He's a longshot of sorts but he's still just 21 years old.

While they don't have the sky-high ceilings others possess, New York has some other outfield prospects at the lower levels worth keeping an eye on, including Brandon Thomas, Michael O'Neill, Jordan Barnes, etc, and one could emerge down the road. Thomas in particular, a switch-hitter, has above average tools but needs the bat to catch up to his physical prowess.

How Do They Compare In...

Power: The loss of Jacobs and Hazelbaker puts Boston in a precarious power position among their outfield prospects. Only Brentz projects to be a viable plus power hitter, and the combination of De La Cruz and Ramos are not enough to combat the likes of Almonte, Austin, Heathcott, Judge, and the host of lower level power bats the Yankees can trot out there. Even without Santana and Mesa, the Yankees have impressive power depth. Advantage: Yankees

Hitting For Average: This one is not as close as some pundits might think given the not so great seasons turned in by Mason Williams, Tyler Austin, and other Yankee bats last season, but on strict hitting ability alone, and that's including the likes of Gamel, Flores, Cave, and others, the Yankees, while they don't have a Jackie Bradley Jr. necessarily, have too much depth hitting-wise. Advantage: Yankees

Defense: This one is a real no contest. While Bradley Jr. is solid, the Sox have to look all the way down to Margot at the lower levels to find a potential difference-maker defensively. The Yankees on the other hand have a plethora of above average to plus defenders, including Williams, Heathcott, Gamel, Cave, etc, etc. Advantage: Yankees

Speed: Again the loss of Jacobs and Hazelbaker, Boston's top two speed prospects in the outfield, puts them in a bad spot here. Only Margot is truly above average, although Hudson could wind up being one too, but the Yankees have several above average runners or better and that's even after losing Ravel Santana and Melky Mesa. Advantage: Yankees.

Overall Potential: Boston is going to get the short-term credit for better depth simply because Jackie Bradley Jr. and Bryce Brentz could make immediate impacts with the big league club, but the fact is New York has way, way too much depth among their outfield prospects both at the upper levels and absolutely at the lower levels for the Red Sox to compare. Advantage: Yankees.
