Q&A with Yanks 6th Round Pick Brandon Wagner

We sat down with Yankees' 6th round pick, Brandon Wagner, for a Draft Day Q&A session. Find out what the second baseman from Howard College says about his game, how he feels being drafted by the Yankees, what he'll bring to the Yankees organization, and much more.

PinstripesPlus.com: Tell us what it feels like to be selected by the New York Yankees?

Brandon Wagner: It’s a dream. Growing up all I wanted to do was play for the NY Yankees having grown up only an hour away from the city. I think it’s only now just sinking in that I’ve been drafted by the best organization in all of sports.

PinstripesPlus.com: Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Yankees?

Wagner: I'm more of an offensive guy; I have some left-handed pop and I think that fits well into Yankee stadium. It’s a hitters park and the short right field porch should play into my swing.

PinstripesPlus.com: What are your strengths and your weaknesses?

Wagner: My biggest strength would be my ability to hit well while my weakest would definitely have to be my bunting and playing defense, and finding a position to play. I’ve played all over the infield at shortstop, second base, third base and even in the outfield.

PinstripesPlus.com: How about your defensive game?

Wagner: It’s probably the weakest part of my game and because I played a bunch of different positions; it’s the part of my game that I need to work on the most.

PinstripesPlus.com: Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so the Yankees' fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Wagner: Dan Uggla. I have the offensive game down but I have a lot to improve on in the field defensively.

PinstripesPlus.com: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Yankees or were you surprised when they selected you?

Wagner: My adviser was calling me in the 6th round telling me that the Mets or San diego wanted draft me soon. But they both passed up on me and then I heard the Yankees wanted me in this round, and that’s who I ended up with.

PinstripesPlus.com: Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

Wagner: I’ve played all around the diamond and even in the outfield some, one of the things i’m uncertain of right now is where i’ll be playing at so it’s something that I’ll have to wait and see on.

PinstripesPlus.com: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Wagner: When I was 12 I played on my cousin’s little league team which was a team that was a few ages up from me with my uncle as the head coach, and it was amazing playing with my family. That was a very special summer for me.

PinstripesPlus.com: You mentioned the Yankees were your favorite team -- who was your favorite player growing up?

Wagner: My favorite player growing up has to be a tie between Prince Fielder and Derek Jeter. I just am amazed by what Derek Jeter has accomplished in his career.

PinstripesPlus.com: What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Yankees? Is it your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?

Wagner: I plan on going down to tampa and sign my professional contract so that I can start playing right away.
