Q&A with Yankees 22nd Round Pick Cody Carroll

We sat down with Yankees’ 22nd round pick, Cody Carroll, for a Q&A session. Find out what he has to say about being picked by the Yankees, to whom he compares himself in the big leagues and why his time in Southern Mississippi prepared him in being a professional baseball player, and more.

PinstripesPlus.com: Tell us what is going through your mind after being selected by a team like the Yankees.

Cody Carroll: I’m just ecstatic to get the chance to further my playing career. I couldn’t really ask to be picked by a better organization than the New York Yankees.

PinstripesPlus.com: Were you surprised it was the Yankees that selected you? Had you and the Yankees talked much before the draft?

Carroll: We had a couple of conversations before the draft a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t really hear anything in the last couple of days except for when they called me 10 or 15 minutes before I got picked.

PinstripesPlus.com: Do you have any idea what the Yankees' organization or farm system is like?

Carroll: I really don’t know to be honest. I’m just excited to be a Yankee.

PinstripesPlus.com: What type of pitches do you throw and at what speeds? Give us a scouting report please - what are your strengths and what do you need to work on the most?

Carroll: I throw a fastball, slider, and a changeup. My fastball, which is more of a sinker technically because of its movement, goes anywhere between 91-94 mph. My slider can go from 75-80 mph. My changeup is usually more of a circle changeup. The one thing I definitely feel like I need to work on the most is controlling my slider ahead of the count.

PinstripesPlus.com: Was the increase in your workload from last year to this year [49.2 IP in 2014 and 96.1 in 2015] was a big step forward in improving?

Carroll: Absolutely yes. I think I improved greatly over the years and especially with this past season. I think the stats show that I’ve grown and I still need to improve on my stuff.

PinstripesPlus.com: Did you have a favorite team growing up or a favorite player?

Carroll: I was actually a Cardinals fan growing up. We would usually root for anybody that comes out of Vanderbilt University which is near my home.

PinstripesPlus.com: Who would you compare your stuff to at the Major League level so Yankees' fans can get an idea of what you're like on the mound? And why?

Carroll: I would say I’m kind of close to A.J. Burnett with the pitch-ability, not with the off the field things. My fastball mostly, but overall in terms of pitching ability, I feel like I’m close to A.J. Burnett.

PinstripesPlus.com: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Carroll: The last couple of months with my team in Southern Mississippi this season. We went on a 13-game winning streak to end the regular season and it was probably the most fun I’ve had playing baseball in a very long time.

PinstripesPlus.com: Was there anything you learned from playing at Southern Mississippi that’s going to help you in your pro career?

Carroll: I think the whole high management and being alone for four years will help tremendously with dealing with everything and not getting stressed out. My work ethic has gotten better in the last year and I thank the coaches there for helping me.

PinstripesPlus.com: Are you looking to sign quickly and get your professional career started right away?

Carroll: My plan is to sign right away and get started as soon as possible.

PinstripesPlus.com: Do you think the pressures of pitching in New York might be a problem?

Carroll: I don’t really think so. Again being alone in college for four years really helped me tremendously and I feel like I’ve gotten more mature especially this past year.
