Yanks Cruise To Sixth Straight Win

If Jason Giambi and Aaron Boone are in slumps, nobody told them. The two Yankees that have been struggling the most lately broke out in big ways. Each hit a homerun to help key a 10-4 victory over the Devil Rays as David Wells worked in and out of trouble to earn a victory. The Yankees have now won six straight games.

Giambi put together a four-hit performance Friday, including a towering solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth inning that took a long time to come down. But when it finally hit the seats it gave the Yanks a 6-2 lead. Boone's three-run blast into the bullpen in left field capped the scoring for the Yankees at ten runs.

Wells (14-6) scattered ten hits over seven innings to earn his second straight win. The lefty allowed just two runs and didn't walk a batter while striking out four.

The D-Rays scored first on a second-inning sacrifice fly from Travis Lee that scored Rocco Baldelli from third base.

The Yanks tied the game back up on Aaron Boone's RBI double in the very next half inning. Boone had three hits on the night, raising his average as a Yankee to .229. New York added two more runs in the third inning on Giambi's RBI single and Bernie Williams' RBI groundout bringing their lead to 3-1.

In the fifth, Juan Rivera doubled to left field to score Boone all the way from first base then scored himself on Nick Johnson's RBI single. Rivera had a pair of hits, including a ground-rule double in the sixth inning that put the Yanks up 7-2.

Tampa Bay scored a pair of runs off of Antonio Osuna in the top of the ninth inning on Crawford's RBI single and Aubrey Huff's run-scoring groundout. Huff now has 99 RBI on the season, more than any Yankee not named Matsui – who also has 99.

Games two and three of the four-game series will take place on Saturday in a day-night doubleheader. Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.24) will take the mound for the Yankees in the first game to face either Rob Bell (4-3, 5.38) or Carlos Reyes (0-2, 4.82). In game two, Jeff Weaver (7-9, 5.93) will start for the Bombers against Tampa Bay's Chad Gaudin (1-0, 3.62).
