PP Game Notes: Red Sox 5 - Yankees 4

Even though the first three games of the series seemed like a snooze fest after all the hype this series received, the finale of the Yankees - Red Sox series delivered some excitement. Boston overcame an early 3-0 lead to score a 5-4 victory on Patriot's Day, helped by a costly misplay in the outfield by Hideki Matsui.

The Yankees jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, scoring two on Travis Lee's double and one more on John Flaherty's RBI single... Boston made it 3-1 on Gabe Kapler's RBI single in the bottom of the inning... Jason Giambi increased the lead back to three runs with a solo homerun in the next frame... Boston inched closer, scoring a run on David Ortiz' single in the fifth and a solo homer by Jason Varitek in the sixth that made it a 4-3 ballgame... Pokey Reese led off the seventh with a single that chased Kevin Brown from the game. Gabe White came on and allowed a single to Johnny Damon that moved Reese to third. After Bill Mueller struck out, David Ortiz checked his swing and sent a chopper toward third base. Alex Rodriguez fielded, but double-clutched and threw the ball into centerfield. Reese scored from third to tie the game, Damon was safe at second and Ortiz was credited with an infield single and RBI.

The Yankees attempted to make it interesting in the eighth when Hideki Matsui led off with a single, but Travis Lee and Jorge Posada struck out and Ruben Sierra grounded out to first to end the threat... David McCarty led off the bottom of the eighth by skying a ball to left field that Hideki Matsui didn't see. The ball fell in for a double, and McCarty came around to score on Gabe Kapler's single, giving Boston the lead... Keith Foulke came on and worked around an A-Rod single (his first hit of the series) to notch the save. Giambi struck out looking to end the game.

Tom Gordon (0-1) took the loss for the Yankees, who fell to 6-7 on the season. Brown lasted six innings and allowed four runs on nine hits while fanning four... Mike Timlin (1-1) got the win for the Red Sox, and Foulke earned his third save... Matsui was 3/3 with a double in the game, bringing his average to .267 this year, but his misplay in the eighth might have cost the Yanks the game... A-Rod went 1/5 in the game and 1/17 overall in the series. He is now hitting .160... David Ortiz had three hits and a pair of RBI for the Sox.

The Yankees head to Chicago next to face the White Sox in a three-game series. Alex Graman, called up before Monday's game, will start for the Yankees against Chicago's Mark Buehrle (1-0, 3.05).
