PP Game Notes: Yankees 4 - Royals 2

Mike Mussina is improving with each start. He picked up a win as the Yankees completed their sweep of the Royals and pushed their win streak to six games. Jason Giambi and Hideki Matsui led the offense with two hits each as the Yanks won 4-2.

Mussina (2-4) earned just his second win of the year, allowing two runs on eight hits without walking a batter for the first time all season. He struck out two batters... The Royals got out of the gate quickly with a run on two hits in the first, including a Carlos Beltran triple that should have been a double. Gary Sheffield misplayed the ball off the wall and Beltran scampered to third... The lead became 2-0 when Beltran scored on a Mike Sweeney single in the third inning... New York pulled closer on Miguel Cairo's sacrifice fly in the third and tied the game on Jason Giambi's upper-deck homerun in the fourth. It was his fifth homerun of the season... Royals' starter Jeremy Affeldt and Mussina traded zeros for a few innings before the Yankees struck again in the seventh. Jorge Posada led off with a double to right and scored on Hideki Matsui's RBI single that broke the tie. Matsui moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ruben Sierra's sac fly, Sierra's eighth RBI in two games... Affeldt (0-3) was pitching well until the seventh. He lasted 6.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits and a pair of walks. He struck out three... Mariano Rivera worked around a leadoff single and a hit batter in the ninth to earn his ninth save in nine chances.

Alex Rodriguez' 12-game hitting streak came to an end, as he went 0/3 with a walk... Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams' mini-hitting streaks - of three and four games, respectively - also came to an end... The top three hitters in the Yankees' order were 0/11, the bottom six were 8/17... Beltran, Juan Gonzalez and Benito Santiago each had two hits for the Royals. One of Gonzalez' hits was a check-swing bloop single to right field... The Yankees turned two double plays. The one they got in the third, with Cairo ranging far to his left, was particularly beautiful.

The win moved the Yankees temporarily into second place, two games behind Boston. The Bombers are off on Monday, then head West for a six-game road trip against Oakland and Seattle. Game one is on Tuesday at 10:05 PM Eastern time against the A's. Jose Contreras (1-2) is scheduled to pitch against Mark Mulder (2-2).
