PP Game Notes: Yankees 4 - Oakland 3

The Yankees played the comeback game again, this time scoring two in the ninth inning to take a 4-3 victory from the Oakland A's. Alex Rodriguez hit a game-tying homerun and Tony Clark drove in the go-ahead run as the Yanks won their eighth straight.

The Yankees took the early lead for a change, scoring first on Gary Sheffield's second-inning solo homerun, but Scott Hatteberg matched that in the bottom of the inning to tie the score... Eric Byrnes' RBI double in the third gave the A's a 2-1 lead that lasted until the sixth inning, when Jason Giambi launched a solo homerun of his own to tie the game... In the seventh, with two outs, the A's finally got to Kevin Brown when Mark Kotsay doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Brown left the game after walking Byrnes and Gabe White allowed an RBI single to Eric Chavez that looked like it would jeapordize Brown's perfect record... With the score still 3-2 in the ninth, the A's called on closer Arthur Rhodes. A-Rod sent Rhodes' very first pitch over the centerfield wall to tie the game and keep the Yankees alive. Two outs later, Rhodes walked Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui to put a runner in scoring position for Tony Clark, who ripped an RBI double to left-center to give the Yanks the lead... Mariano Rivera worked around two baserunners and got Chavez to pop out to deep second base to end the game.

Paul Quantrill (3-1) nabbed the win for the Yankees, pitching 3.1 innings of perfect relief. The save was Rivera's 11th in 11 chances... Rhodes (0-1) blew his second save of the year and suffered the loss... Brown lasted 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Oakland starter Barry Zito lasted six innings and allowed two runs on six hits, striking out six batters.

Matsui was 3/4 in the game to bring his average up to .319 this year. He and Jorge Posada are the only Yankees at .300 or above... Every Yankee starter had a base hit except for Miguel Cairo... Derek Jeter was a late scratch due to a stomach virus, Enrique Wilson started at shorstop and made several nice defensive plays... Chavez continued his amazing play at third base, starting a double play on a rocket grounder off the bat of Sheffield in the ninth.

The Yankees will look to win their ninth straight and sweep the A's for the second time this year on Thursday at 10:05 PM. Javier Vazquez (3-2, 2.55) will face Oakland's Rich Harden (0-2, 4.37).
