PP Game Notes: Athletics 7 - Yankees 4

The Yankees looked in control of the game for the first two innings, but Rich Harden settled down and the A's came from behind to halt the Yankees win streak. Mark Kotsay had three hits and drove in four runs to lead the A's to a 7-4 victory as Harden earned his first victory of 2004.

Harden looked lost in the early goings, walking the bases loaded in the first inning before working out of it. He wasn't so lucky in the second, when he gave up five straight hits - including a two-RBI triple to Kenny Lofton - that put the A's in a 4-0 hole... But Harden clamped down, retiring 15 of the next 17 batters before walking Hideki Matsui and Bernie Williams in the eighth... The A's, meanwhile, got to Yankee starter Javier Vazquez bit-by-bit. Jermaine Dye scored in the second on a bases-loaded walk and Kotsay drove two runs home with a single to make it 4-3... Erubiel Durazo's solo homer in the fourth tied it at 4-4... Two more hits and a walk in the sixth loaded the bases for Oakland again, and Vazquez walked Billy McMillon to bring home the go-ahead run. Gabe White relieved and gave up a two-RBI single to Kotsay to make it 7-4, Oakland.

Harden (1-2) picked up his first win, going 7.2 innings and allowing four runs on six hits and five walks. He struck out nine... Vazquez (3-3) had his worst start in pinstripes, allowing seven runs on six hits and an uncharacteristic four walks... Jim Mecir pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the year.

The Yankees lost their eight-game losing streak but still took two of three games in the series. They now head to Seattle for a three-game series. Game one is Friday at 10:05 PM. Jon Lieber (1-0, 3.86) will pitch for the Yankees against the Mariners' Ryan Franklin (1-2, 5.46)
