PP Game Notes: Yankees 2 - Mariners 1

Kevin Brown and Joel Pineiro matched up for a classic pitcher's duel in the Bronx, that ended up with Brown coming away with the victory. Brown improved to 5-0 on the season, holding the M's to just one run. Pineiro went the distance, but lost anyway as the Yanks won 2-1.

Brown gave up a fair amount of hits, but managed to work his way out jams. In the fourth, Seattle loaded the bases with only one out, but Brown got Rich Aurilia to foul out behind the plate and then induced an easy ground ball from Pat Borders to end the threat... John Flaherty's solo homerun off the foul pole in left put the Yankees up 1-0 in the third... Tony Clark made it 2-0 when his RBI single drove in Bernie Williams in the fourth... Seattle didn't score until the eighth, when Scott Spiezio's flyball cleared the wall in left for a solo home run... The M's stranded a runner on third in the ninth inning as Mariano Rivera nailed down his 14th save of the year.

Pineiro (1-5) had his best outing of the season by far, lasting eight innings and allowing just two runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out six batters and looked sharp throughout the game... Brown (5-0) went 7.2 innings, allowed a run on eight hits and a walk and fanned five... Tom Gordon struck out Jolbert Cabrera to end the eighth for his ninth hold of the year... Alex Rodriguez went 1/3 and stole his sixth base of the season. He is ahead of last year's pace.

The Yankees continued their streak of series victories with this one over Seattle... Next they head to Anaheim for a re-match with the Angels... Game one is on Monday at 10:05 PM Eastern time... Javier Vazquez (3-4, 4.10) will face Aaron Sele (2-0, 3.62).
