PP Game Notes: Thunder 6 - Curve 1

The Trenton Thunder defeated the Altoona Curve 6-1 in front of 5,605 fans on an overcast evening in Trenton. This was the first time the Thunder have won consecutive games since April 27-29.

Javier Ortiz (2-3) got the win for the Thunder and Justin Reid (0-1) took the loss for the Curve.

The Thunder took an early 3-0 lead in the first on the benefit of only one hit. Kevin Reese led off the game with a grounded that was missed by the second baseman Jeff Keppinger. Craig Wilson followed with a walk to put two on with no outs for Robinson Cano. Cano followed by taking a 1-0 pitch from Justin Reid over the right field wall for a three run homer.

Altoona came back in the top of the second with one of their own. After Ryan Doumit reached on an error by Cano and a single to left by Ray Navarrete to put runners at first and second before Javier Ortiz uncorked a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third. Ray Sadler followed with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Doumit to cut the Thunder lead to 3-1.

The Thunder added single runs in the third and fourth to take a 5-1 lead. In the third, three singles by Aaron Rifkin, Dioner Navarro, and Mitch Jones resulted in a Thunder run. Mitch Jones got the single on which Rifkin scored to put Trenton up 4-1. Kevin Reese led off the fourth with a single to left center. After moving over to third on a ground out by Craig Wilson, Reese scored on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Rifkin.

The Thunder added one more in the eighth when Jason Grove hit his fifth home run of the year to deep right field to put Trenton up 6-1.

Tuesday night's 7-6 victory against the Curve was Thunder manager Stump Merrill's 400 win in the Eastern League. ..Kevin Reese has 21 doubles on the season, including his two last night. The Thunder record for doubles in a season is 35.…Dioner Navarro has started to hit the ball hard but hasn't been able to get any hits. Navarro said "I feel like I am coming out of it and that everything is coming around and starting to work the way it should. [the problem] was100% mental." Asked about his defense, Navarro said, "I work everyday to improve and it's just a matter of focus. Focus everyday, on every pitch."….Buddy Carlyle(1-0) will make the start against the Curve tomorrow night for the injured Ramon Ramirez. LHP Scott Wiggins was activated off the Disabled List by the Thunder today to take the roster spot opened up by Ramon Ramirez injury. Pitching match-ups for the Reading series have Sean Henn (1-1) going against Robinson Tejeda (2-4) on Friday, Chien-ming Wang (1-3) going against Keith Bucktrot (3-1) on Saturday and Matt Smith (3-3) dueling with Franklin Perez (3-3) in the finale on Sunday.
