PinstripesPlus: What was Jesse's best performance with you as his coach?

Devine: Jesse pitched against Cumberland Univ. the 2004 NAIA National Champions in his first outing of the season. He had 15 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. He was clocked at 96-97 MPH.

PinstripesPlus: What type of pitcher would you describe him as in detail?

Devine: He is a power pitcher who has very good stamina for this being his first full season as a starter. His previous 2 seasons, he was our closer.

PinstripesPlus: What do you think is a quality of him that sets him apart as a pitcher?

Devine: He has the ability to get stronger as the game goes on.

PinstripesPlus: Was there one defining moment in his career that you saw that made him the pitcher he is now?

Devine: It is all the days especially in the summer where he would be throwing a baseball against the wall working on his control and velocity.

PinstripesPlus: Is there a big league pitcher that you would compare him to in style?

Devine: No, not really.

PinstripesPlus: What is his best pitch and why? How does he utilize this pitch?

Devine: His best pitch is his fastball. He has been at 97MPH on two different occasions. He uses it to get ahead but he has also used it as his strikeout pitch.

PinstripesPlus: What are, if any Jesse's leadership skills like?

Devine: He is the hardest worker on the baseball team every day.

PinstripesPlus: What do you think is his best quality and how will this help him in the progress of his career?

Devine: I think his best quality is he constantly wants to improve, learn the game, and compete.

PinstripesPlus: Do you think he has what it takes to be in the majors, why is this?

Devine: Absolutely. He has a very strong upper and lower body and in his mental makeup, he is very confident.

PinstripesPlus: Is he the best player you have ever coached, why or why not?

Devine: He is the best pitcher I have been associated with because I have seen his development and where he started and now where he is.

PinstripesPlus: How would you describe Jesse's approach to a typical hitter? ex. does he go inside?

Devine: He likes to get on top with his fastball and will work it on the inside and outside.

PinstripesPlus: Would he qualify as a strikeout or a finesse pitcher? Why?

Devine: I would call him a strikeout pitcher because he averaged 14 strikesouts per start.

PinstripesPlus: What impresses you the most about Jesse Hoover?

Devine: He is constantly trying to improve his mechanics and become a more knowledgeable player.

PinstripesPlus: What would you say that his biggest weakness is?

Devine: He does not have control of three pitches to use them at any time.

PinstripesPlus: If you had one piece of advice for him, what would it be?

Devine: To continue to work hard, learn from others and show what he is capable of doing.
