PP Game Notes: Thunder 7, Navigators 4

After giving up leads of 2-0 and 4-3, the Thunder battled back to get a 7-4 win in front of 4,907 fans at Waterfront Park on a beautiful late Sunday afternoon in Trenton. Aaron Rifkin ended it in the ninth off Alberto Montes with a walk-off three run homer to right field.

The ninth started when Tommy Winrow, who's been struggling recently, led off the inning with a single to center. After Andy Cannizaro sacrificed him over to second and Jake Weber flew out, Bronson Sardinha was intentionally walked. With runners on first and second, Rifkin deposited a 3-2 fastball from Montes out in the trees beyond the manual scoreboard in right field.

Tim Adkins (1-4) came on with two outs in top of the ninth with Jake Wald in scoring position and retired Doug Clark on a grounder to second to get the win. Montes fell to 5-4 on the year after serving up Rifkin's homer. Thunder starter Chien-ming Wang gave up three earned runs in his seven plus innings of work but manger Stump Merrill said he thought that Wang "made some bad pitches early in the game."

The pitches Merrill referred to probably included the first pitch singles he allowed to Carlos Valderrama and Derin McMains that came around to score in the second and the one out double he allowed to Jay Pecci that came around to score in the third. Wang looked on his game for the most part though, as his eight strikeouts and no walks would attest.

Winrow, who entered the game 1-for-15 in his last four games, led off the ninth with a single and went 2-for-4 on the evening. Winrow has been working with several Thunder coaches on his swing. Winrow's other hit in the second inning, a single to center, scored Jason Grove and put the Thunder up 2-0 at the time. Grove came into the game hitting .273 with runners in scoring position and increased that by going 2-for-2 in that situation Sunday against the Navigators.
