Staten Island Q&A with Tommy John

Staten Island manager Tommy John sat down with Frankie to give some of his insights on the SI Yanks. Who does Tommy think is the most impressive pitcher and most impressive hitter? What does Tommy think of Edgar Soto and Jesse Hoover? PinstripesPlus Premium Members can find out right now!

PinstripesPlus: What is your overall take on the pitching staff that has been presented to you this season?

Tommy John: Our pitchers? Our pitchers are good. Statistically we are somewhere near third from the bottom. But we have three guys that aren't with us anymore and if you take out their ERA, we should be right up near the top of the league in pitching. The guys who we have right now can really pitch.

PinstripesPlus: What do you see down the road for Jesse Hoover? What kind of role might he be in and what improvements might he have to make?

Tommy John: Hoover has got a great arm. All he has to do is refine throwing the ball over the plate. He actually threw his curveball all year when he came in against Brooklyn, which is good. Even in this league, you still have to change speeds and you have mix in a breaking ball. Jesse has a bright future.

PinstripesPlus: Which hitter on the team has impressed you the most this season?

Tommy John: Well, the young guy that must came up looks really good. He is a 17 year old, Marcos Vechionacci. He is hitting third in our lineup tonight and he looks really good. Justin Christian, we got him out of an Independent League also looks good. We have some guys that will hit in spurts. We just have to cut down on our mistakes at the plate and our offense will be alright.

PinstripesPlus: Which pitcher has impressed you the most this season?

Tommy John: Well, Hoover looks good. Jason Jones also. Jeff Marquez too. He just got promoted. But, the guy that I really like is Shaun Parker. He knows how to move the ball around. Maybe it is because he pitches like I did and that is why I like him. But, the kid can really pitch. He throws strikes which is very important.

PinstripesPlus: Edgar Soto seems to have a lot of potential. What improvements might he have to make in order to fulfill his potential?

Tommy John: Who, Soto? Soto is good. He hurt his arm the other day and he is getting it checked out. So I don't know what is happening with him right now. He is getting an MRI done. So, I am not sure what is store for him right now.

PinstripesPlus: What pitcher do you think is most likely to be on the fast track to the big leagues?

Tommy John: Well, that is tough. I don't know. I have only seen them for 22 games. Maybe if you come back after we have played 50 games or so and give them a chance to play better then it would be easier to see who can really play. I mean, right now, these guys are just babies. They are just learning how to crawl.
