Columbus Clippers. The Columbus Clippers took the filed on Thursday night and they would be taking part in the mini rivalry against the Pawtucket Red Sox. However, things have not been going well as of late for the Clippers at all. They would drop yet another game on Thursday to the PawSox. They went on to lose the game by the final score of 12-5. They were also out hit by Pawtucket by the final count of 14-9. Kevin Reese has been continually on fire at the plate since joining the team from AA Trenton. He had yet another multi hit game on Thursday as he picked up two hits in four trips to the plate. He has now raised his batting average to a lofty .373 with Columbus. Dioner Navarro still doesn't seem quite as comfortable at the plate these days. His batting average is now down to .184 after and 0-4 showing on Thursday. Felix Escalona is stroking the ball very well right now and on Thursday he discovered his power stroke. He blasted his fifth home run of the season. Eric Schmitt was on the mound for the Clippers on Thursday and he got knocked around pretty good. Schmitt went five innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three. He took the loss.
Trenton Thunder. Well, it is pretty easy to say that Thursday night was a night that the Trenton Thunder would probably like to put away and forget all about. They took an absolute pounding from the Akron Aeros in an embarrassing loss. The Trenton Thunder went on to lose this ballgame by the final score of a lopsided, 14-4. They were also widely out hit by the final count of 18-9. Kevin Thompson has really turned things around in the past week or so. He had another two hit ballgame on Thursday to raise his AA batting average all the way up to .247. Bronson Sardinha hasn't had any troubles like that this season. In Tampa, he has a .300 hitter and he is the same thing in Trenton as well. Sardinha had another two hit evening on Thursday as he went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored as well. Any Cannizaro also had a big night at the dish as he smacked two hits in five at bats including a double and a run scored. However, pitching was the story of the night. But, it was a not a very positive story though. Sean Henn took the mound for Trenton and had an absolutely awful outing. Henn lasted only 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out only two. He took the loss to drop to 4-5 on the season.
Tampa Yankees. What a great ballgame it was on Thursday in Tampa, Florida. The Tampa Yankees were taking on Vero Beach and they battled them in a terrific ballgame. The game ended up going fourteen innings but to the pleasure of the T-Yanks, it would end up in their favor. They went on to win the ballgame over Vero Beach by the final score of 7-6. They also out hit Vero Beach by the final count of 12-11 as well. In a very rare case this season, Melky Cabrera is actually experiencing some struggles at the plate. He had a very rough night on Thursday as he went a disappointing 0-6. For the first time, Melky's batting average has dipped below the .300 mark at .294. Eric Duncan has found his way nicely with Tampa after struggling early on. Duncan had one hit on the night with two RBI but what is very impressive is that he drew three walks in the game. Ferdin Tejada had, by far, his best game of the entire season on Thursday. Ferdin had three hits in six trips to the plate. Jose Valdez got the nod for the start in this game. Things kind of fell apart for Valdez as his outing ended up being not that great at all. He lasted only four innings, yielding four runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three.
Battle Creek Yankees. Let's play two. The Battle Creek Yankees took the filed to play a doubleheader on Thursday and they were taking on the West Michigan Whitecaps. In game one, the Battle Creek Yankees lost in a very tight ballgame by the final count of 6-5. They were also out hit by the count of 12-5. In game two, the Battle Creek Yankees lost again but this time by the final score of 7-5. However, they did out hit the Whitecaps by the final count of 12-9. No one could figure out how to stop Bryce Kartler quite yet. In game one, Kartler had two hits in three at bats. Then, in game two it was the same exact case. His batting average is now creeping towards .300 at .293 for the season. Hector Made had a nice day at the plate. He had three hits in game two of the doubleheader. In the second game, Matt Carson also had a good showing, Carson picked up two hits in four trips to the plate including an RBI and a run scored as well. Ben Moore got a spot start on Thursday evening for Battle Creek and, to his credit, he did a very solid job. Moore went five strong innings, relinquishing two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out five.
Staten Island Yankees. Hey, how about this for big news, The Staten Island Yankees won a ballgame on Thursday night. Win or lose on this night, the Staten Island Yankees played in one very good baseball game. The Baby Bombers were taking on the Tri-City Valley Cats and battled them for thirteen long innings. But, eventually, they came out on top of the Valley Cats by the final score of 6-5. They also out hit the Valley Cats by the final count of 14-11. Justin Christian has been a huge offensive addition since he signed with the organization out of the Independent League River City Rascals. Christian led the charge on Thursday as he had a big night at the plate. He picked up two hits in five at bats including a double, a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Scott Rich also had a nice night in the batter's box as he smacked three hits in six trips to the plate including an RBI. Hector Zamora also had two hits in this game with two key RBI as well. Jeff Marquez was on the mound for Staten Island and he, once again, pitched pretty well. As of now, he is still on a low pitch count so he did not pitch deep into the game at all. But, that was not because of lack of effectiveness. Marquez went 4 2/3 innings. giving up two runs (none earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out three. He got a no decision.
Gulf Coast Yankees. Let's play two in the Gulf Coast League. The Gulf Coast Yankees also played in a doubleheader. The Gulf Coast Yankees have lost a lot of players this season due to promotions but they are still managing to play good baseball. The GCL Yankees were victorious in the first of two games by the final score of 4-0 over the Gulf Coast Phillies. They also out hit the Phillies by the final count of 4-1. Hector Gonzalez is making his presence known so far as he has started off very well. Gonzalez picked up a hit in this game in three at bats including an RBI. However, the story of game one was the fantastic pitching performance. Who turned in a dazzling outing. Christian Garcia. Garcia went five innings and gave up no runs on no hits. That's right. Not hits. He also walked only one and struck out four. His season ERA was lowered to a microscopic 1.38. It was a good all around day for the GCL Yankees as they also ended up victorious in game two. They went on to win by the final score of 5-2 over the Phillies. Jon Poterson continued his terrible struggles as he went hitless again. His season batting average is now down to .172. Raul Dominguez has had almost no struggles this season. He had two more hits in this game including an RBI. His season average now sits at .306.
