Yankees Move Back to South Atlantic League

The New York Yankees, who ended their player developmental contract with the Battle Creek affiliate in the Midwest League, are heading back to the South Atlantic Leaugue after agreeing to a two-year contract with the Charleston RiverDogs. The Charleston RiverDogs will serve as an affiliate of the 26-time World Champion New York Yankees, the ballclub announced Wednesday.

News Release from the Official RiverDogs Website
RiverDogs principal owner Marv Goldklang, who holds a minority share in the Yankees, made the decision from among eight Major League ballclubs who expressed interest in bringing a farm club to Charleston.

"When we found out New York was available, the decision was made right then," Goldklang said.

"In the end, the New York Yankees are the New York Yankees are the New York Yankees."

The four-year agreement between the RiverDogs and Yankees marks the end of Charleston's eight-year affiliation with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Charleston replaces Class-A Battle Creek of the Midwest League in the Yankees minor league system. The Yankees last South Atlantic League affiliate was the 2002 Greensboro Bats.

"While we enjoyed our time in the Midwest League and in Battle Creek, we're happy to get back to the South Atlantic League and we're particularly happy to be in Charleston," Yankees Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Mark Newman said. "It's a first class franchise, a first class facility and a first class city. We are partnering with one of the best minor league franchises in existence. I think it's going to be great for our players to play in that atmosphere, and we're excited about it."

The 2004 RiverDogs finished the regular season 76-63 and made the playoffs for the first time in 16 years. The last time Charleston won a South Atlantic League title was in 1948 as the Rebels. In contrast, the New York Yankees have won 15 World Championships since 1948.

The RiverDogs are owned and operated by the Goldklang Group, based in Florham Park, NJ.

2005 RiverDogs season tickets are on sale now and are available by contacting the RiverDogs front office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647).
