Camp Report: Duncan Is All About the Power

The Yankees' prospects were back at it on Wednesday after a light workout Tuesday. After stretching, some light calisthenics, and short periods of long tossing, the positional players took defensive practice in the field and finished up in the batting cages while the pitchers had another day of bullpen sessions. (Free Preview of Premium Content)

While the majority of the positional players began the morning workouts as a group stretching, Eric Duncan received some individual defensive workouts at first base, getting balls hit to him to develop his glove work around the base. Duncan looked adept at first, picking the balls out the dirt well and showing good range in limited time. But while he received early work at first base, Duncan did take his normal defensive reps at third base later in the morning when the infield prospects took their respective positions, further continuing the notion that Duncan will most likely see time this upcoming season at both positions.

More known for his offensive skills than his defensive ability anyway, Duncan put on a power display later in the day during batting practice. Duncan has made a name for himself with tremendous opposite field power. On Wednesday however, he showed that he can pull balls with the best of them, depositing a few monster home runs over the right field fence.

While Duncan was getting in his work in the cages and in the field, the pitchers got more bullpen work in with Nardi Contreras Wednesday. Guys like Jeff Marquez, Christian Garcia, Brandon Harmsen, and a few others looked really sharp. Yankees' 1st-round pick Phil Hughes also looked quite impressive, displaying good velocity and excellent control. Hughes made a lasting impression on his catcher in the bullpen session, causing his battery mate to look up to Nardi Contreras and say "man, his stuff is really impressive".
