Sizing Up The Outfield Prospects - Part Two

PinstripesPlus.com analyzes the Yankees' outfield prospects. Which OF prospects are the "sleepers"? Which are the ones that need to make their move soon? These questions are answered in Part Two of our two part series on the Yankees' outfield prospects.

The "Sleepers"

Matt Carson: Carson is one of the biggest oversights this site has ever had - leaving him off of the Top 50 Yankees' Prospects list - proving that he in fact the truest "sleeper". Make no mistake about it...Carson is not only on the list, but he's in the upper half. He has five tools in his bag (five-tool talent) and brings an excellent combination of power and speed to the table. Carson has a very good arm in right field and he is one of those guys that has the dirtiest uniform at the the end of the game. The 23-year old BYU product did very little earlier in the year at high-A Tampa so he'll need to prove he can hit at the higher levels, but he's got the talent to make it all the way to the Major Leagues.

Erold Andrus: Andrus, a product of the Venezuelan Summer League, had a breakout campaign with the Battle Creek Yankees in 2004. He hit .291-12-74 with 14 stolen bases and 34 doubles all at the tender age of 20 years old. The Yankees feel that Andrus has a lot more power than he's shown thus far and also feel he may not be the 20-20 threat he showed last season. In fact, the Yankees believe in his power so much so, there has been talk of moving him to first base. Until he does, he's a guy to watch out for in the Yankees' outfield.

Evan Tierce: Four-year college players get no respect and are often overshadowed because of their advanced age. Tierce, who has a world of talent, is a sleeper right off the bat since being selected in the 17th round of the 2004 draft. He has one of the better eyes at the plate, plays a tremendous defensive center field, and has blistering speed. Tierce hit .361 in 40 games for the Gulf Coast League Yankees in 2004, but will have to show the same success at the higher levels. He's literally going to have to hit his way to the Major Leagues, but don't count him out just yet. Tierce, who will turn 23 in July, is a scrappy player that reminds some scouts of Lenny Dykstra of the Phillies and Mets.

Need to Make Their Move

Bubba Crosby: The 28-year old Crosby came over to the Yankees from the Dodgers and saw action in 55 games for the Yankees last season, hitting .151 in limited at-bats. He's got a few tools under his belt but appears headed for his fifth straight year of AAA-ball. Crosby could be used an emergency outfielder for the Yankees again in 2005 but could also use a change of scenery if he wants more playing time.

Jason Grove: Grove is one of the hardest workers on and off the field in the Yankees' farm system and he is truly easy to root for. He hit .291 with 11 home runs for the Trenton Thunder in 2004 but the soon-to-be 27 year old outfielder is buried on the Yankees' outfield depth chart behind the likes of Kevin Reese and Mitch Jones. Grove should be ticketed for AAA-Columbus in 2005.

Eric Verbryke: Verbryke, who turns 24 in August, has had a hard time cracking the starting lineup since being drafted in the 9th round of the 2002 draft. He's done a serviceable job in limited action, hitting .250 with 5 home runs as a fourth outfielder for the Tampa Yankees last season, but will need to to bump up his productivity to get consideration as a legitimate outfield prospect.

Tommy Winrow: The former 2nd round pick (drafted in the 2nd round of the 1999 draft) has not exactly set the prospect scene on fire. Winrow, like Verbryke, hasn't been able to solidify a starting outfield position in his time with the Yankees. He has averaged less than four home runs per year in his six years in the Yankees farm system and has only amassed 400 at-bats in a season just once in his career. Time is running out for Winrow to make his mark.

The Jury Is Still Out

Bryce Kartler: The former Arizona State pitcher was drafted by the Yankees in the 11th round of the 2003 draft and was immediately converted to the outfield. In his first taste of long-season league baseball last season, Kartler hit .252 with 11 home runs and 12 stolen bases as the fourth outfielder for the Battle Creek Yankees. Anybody that saw him play was impressed with the sting he put in balls he hit and some believe he's a possible "sleeper" candidate.

Edwar Gonzalez: Gonzalez, who owns a career batting average of .232 in three years of short-season baseball, has a little bit of speed and power to his game. He just turned 22 years old in January but he'll need to improve on his selectivity at the plate if he's to realize his potential. In 127 career games, Gonzalez has struck out 120 times.

Rod Allen: The Yankees drafted Allen in the 12th round of the 2004 Draft out of Oklahoma State University and saw very little action with the Staten Island Yankees in his professional debut last season. Like Gonzalez, Allen has an interesting combination of power and speed (he hit 12 HRs and had 14 SBs his final year of school). It will be interesting to see how he does given a full-time job.

Robert Villanova: Drafted in the 15th round of the 2004 draft out of Iona College, Villanova saw very little action with the Staten Island Yankees last season. Like Allen, Villanova needs an opportunity to showcase his skills over the course of a full season. He's got a tremendous work ethic and he was one of the first prospects to report to Spring Training this year.

Anderson Amador: The Dominican Republic signee has a lot of power potential as evidenced by his 6 home runs in 46 games for the GCL Yankees in 2004. However, he strikes out at an alarming rate - 60 K's in 161 at-bats! He'll need to improve on his contact hitting too after hitting just .211 last season. But his power potential is very intriguing and it will be interesting to see what kind of production he could have given a full season.
