YMLN- Sardinha Leads Trenton to the Sweep

In our latest YMLN- Colter Bean is starting to look quite human on the mound, Bronson Sardinha went 4-5 to complete the Trenton sweep, Brett Smith wins again despite not pitching well, and Mario Holmann has his first multi-hit game in Charleston's victory over Charleston.

Columbus Clippers: The Clippers lost a marathon of a game Sunday 5-1 in 12 innings to the Syracuse SkyChiefs. For the first 11 innings of the game the Clippers pitching staff was flawless. Starter Jorge DePaula tossed two-hit ball over six innings and struck out four as he battled Syracuse starter Francisco Rosario. DePaula, who let up five runs in five innings in his last start, saw his ERA drop from 5.23 to 3.31 as he handcuffed the SkyChiefs. However, Rosario was working on a perfect game when DePaula left in the sixth, so he was not in line for a decision. The bullpen was stellar for the next five innings with Jason Anderson, Wayne Franklin, and Scott Proctor keeping the SkyChiefs off the scoreboard. Combined, the three only let up three hits and struck out four, thanks mostly to Proctor who had three strikeouts in his 2.1 innings of work. Proctor, who leads in the International League in saves with nine, handed the ball off to Colter Bean to start the 12th. Bean, who made an appearance for the big league club on April 26, could not continue to hold the SkyChiefs down. In his one inning of work he walked four, gave up four hits, and saw Syracuse plate five runs to open up a 5-0 lead. One of the Clippers top relievers, Colter Bean, came into the game with 27 strikeouts in 19 innings this season but failed to get one on Sunday. Bean also took the loss in Depaula's last start on May 17th against the Rochester Red Wings.

Offensively, the Clippers bats did not wake up until the bottom of the 12th and by then it was too late. Left fielder Kevin Reese broke up Rosario's perfect game to lead off the seventh and was moved to second on a Bubba Crosby sacrifice bunt. With his single, Reese is the only Clipper to hit safely in both games this series. After an Andy Phillips walk, Mike Vento and Caonabo Cosme flew out on consecutive at-bats to end the threat. Vento, who was 0-5 in the game, saw his hitting streak halted at five games. The Clippers misplace their bats for the next four innings before starting a mini rally in the bottom of the 12th. After Vento grounded out to first and Cosme walked, Damien Rolls laced a double to center scoring Cosme. The double made the score 5-1, which would prove to be the final. 1B Mitch Jones was given the day off Sunday after striking out two more times on Saturday. In his last four games, Jones is 0-13 with eight strikeouts and with his 0-4 Saturday, dropped his average below .300. A day off can only benefit Jones and will hopefully get the slugger back on track. The Clippers have lost the first two games of the series and will hope to get back on track Monday.

Trenton Thunder: The Thunder sent Matthew DeSalvo to the mound on Sunday in search of a sweep, and a chance to put themselves four games over .500 for the first time in over a year. Trenton defeated Harrisburg 6-5 Sunday but DeSalvo was anything but himself. DeSalvo, the reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, lasted only three innings but did manage to strikeout four Senators to up his team lead to 55. He walked three more on Sunday and has walked three or more in eight of his nine starts. Over the next five innings, Matt Smith and Edwardo Sierra would keep it a one run game before turning the ball over to Justin Pope for the ninth. The Senators would score two off Pope in the ninth making the score 5-2. However, he would get the win thanks to four runs in the bottom half of the inning by the Thunder. Jusin Pope (1-2, 2.84), who came over to the Yankees in the Sterling Hitchcock trade, had made the move to bullpen seemingly with ease. A starter for his entire professional career, Pope ranks second in the Eastern League with nine saves. The Thunder face the New Britain Rock Cats Monday to open an 11-game road swing. Charlie Isaacson (0-1, 4.00) will be making his first start of the season as the Thunder try to make it four in a row.

The Trenton Thunder played the role of cardiac kids on Sunday afternoon, putting together a four-run ninth inning to come away with the victory. Seven Thunder came to the plate in the inning, erasing the three-run deficit and sealing their seven win in eight games. It was Bronson Sardinha who played the role of hero in this game, singling home pinch runner Gabe Lopez with one out in the ninth. Sardinha, who was 1-3 with a walk in Saturday's win, went 4-5 with a run and 2 RBI and also blasted a solo home run, his third of the season. Left fielder Kevin Thompson continued his hot hitting going 2-5 with double and an RBI. He has four hits in his last two games and his 57 hits overall leads the league. A day after cracking his third home run of the year, 2B Yobal Duenas drove in a pair without recording a base hit. With the win, Trenton is currently one game back of Portland for first place in the Northern Division.

Tampa Yankees: After dropping the first three games of the series, Tampa was able to put one in the win column against the first place Vero Beach Dodgers. The pitching staff struggled again Sunday, in the series they have allowed 35 runs, but the offense picked them up in the 8-7 win. Starter Brett Smith worked five innings for the Yankees and actually picked up the win despite allowing six earned runs on 11 hits. Smith, who was promoted from Charleston after going 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in five starts, gave up two in the second, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth but still left with a 7-5 lead. The trio of Brandon Harmsen, Heath Castle, and Jeff Kennard threw the next three innings allowing only one run on three hits. With an 8-7 lead, the Yankees turned to closer Paul Thorp. Thorp struck out the side, preserving the victory, and also moving himself into second place in the Florida State League with nine saves.

The Tampa offense failed to show up on Saturday, losing 8-1 with only John Urick (3-4, 2B) having any kind of day at the plate. On Sunday they would score eight themselves, thanks to a four-run first. Matt Carson and Rudy Guillen hit back to back home runs in the inning as the Yankees jumped on Vero Beach starter Brian Pilkington, who came into the game with a 1.64 ERA. Carson's three-run blast was his seventh of the year and Guillen's solo shot was his second. Left fielder Bryce Kartler, who homered on Friday night, drove in three runs and also stole his third bag of the year. Justin Christian continued his hot hitting from the leadoff spot, going 2-4 and stealing his 19th base. Tampa (20-22), returns home Monday to start a series with the St. Lucie Mets. St. Lucie (16-27) is currently ranked last in the East Division.

Charleston Riverdogs: After losing the opener of their eight-game road trip to Hickory on Saturday, the Riverdogs used a five-run fifth to even the series on Sunday, 5-3. The Crawdads got to starter Jeff Marquez to the tune of three runs on nine hits in five innings but the bullpen work of Josh Smith, Saydel Beltran, T.J. Beam, and Mike Martinez held Hickory scoreless the rest of the way. Beltran, who picked up a save in his professional debut Thursday, looked even better on Sunday striking out the side in the seventh to keep his ERA at 0.00. Beam added another strikeout to his team lead in the eighth. On the year, Beam has struck out 34 batters in only 29 innings. In the ninth, the Riverdogs handed the ball over to the best closer in the South Atlantic League. Martinez, who came into the game leading the league in saves, allowed the first runner to get on; only to pick him off and retire the next two. It was save number 15 in 15 chances for Martinez this season to go along with his 1.23 ERA. Left hander Chase Wright (3-1, 4.78) takes the ball for the Riverdogs on Monday for game three of this four-game set.

The Riverdog bats came alive for one inning on Sunday and that was all they needed. Powered by a CF Tim Battle's two-run home run, the Dogs scored five times in the inning and got back on the winning track. 1B Cody Ehlers, whose 2-4 day put his batting average at an even .300, doubled to lead off the inning. Ehlers extended his hitting streak to four games. Ben Jones then walked and Estee Harris followed him by doubling in Ehlers. Jones then scored on a Yosvany Almario-Cabrera single. After an error scored Harris the score was 3-2 in favor of the Dogs. Battle then hit what would turn out to be the game-winning home run making the score 5-2. 2B Mario Holmann, who was hitting .478 in extended spring training before being called up on May 18th, went 2-3 for his first multi-hit game of his Riverdog career. With the win, Charleston (28-16) kept its two game lead over Augusta (26-18) for first place in the Southern League.
