2005 GCL Yankees Position Prospect Review

The Gulf Coast Yankees compiled an impressive 33-20 record this season, mostly behind the strength of their hitting, en route to a Championship year. We will look at the peripherals stats of these futures stars. PinstripesPlus will look at the guys who played a majority of the season with the GCL Yankees, those who had a minimum of 70 at-bats with the team and did not collect more than 75 at-bats with any other team.

Wilkins De La Rossa - OF

Signed as an International free agent way back in November of 2001, De La Rossa spent three seasons with the Dominican Summer League Yankees before making his way over states-side to make his U.S. debut with the Gulf Coast League Yankees in 2005. He hit just .216 in 472 over the course of his three seasons in the Dominican Summer League despite drawing 15 less walks than strikeouts. He once again showed an excellent eye and patience at the plate in 2005, evidenced by his above average walk ratio below.

He was second on the Gulf Coast League team in doubles with 13 but he still has just three career home runs (including none in '05) in 657 at-bats so far. Blessed with a good batting eye, a very good arm in the outfield, and decent speed, De La Rossa will only go as far as his power will take him. He'll be 21 years old when the 2006 season arrives and he'll need to show increased power in a hurry in low-A ball.

Angel Fermin - 1B

Signed as an International free agent in March of 2003 out of the Dominican Republic, Fermin spent two seasons with the Dominican Summer League Yankees where he displayed good raw power (9 home runs in 166 at-bats in 2004) but struggled with a .212 average in 353 at-bats before playing with the GCL Yankees in 2005. In the Gulf Coast League however, Fermin was able to show a good balance between hitting for a good average while continuing to flash his power.

Fermin lead the team in doubles (17), RBI (32) and tied for the team lead in home runs (5), while hitting .305 overall. However, it was his production with runners in scoring position this past season that has many Yankees' officials excited. Fermin hit .380 with runners in scoring position, among the league leaders in that category. If there's one concern among his peripheral stats below, its his patience at the plate. He drew just one walk in his last 49 plate appearances this past season. His walk ratio is below average and it is something he'll need to work on next season and beyond if he's to hit for the same average at the higher minor league levels. Fermin should get a chance to work on his eye at the plate with the Charleston Riverdogs next season.

Jose Gil - C

Another International free agent signing, Gil was signed by the Yankees out of Venezuela in July of 2003 and played with the Dominican Summer League Yankees in 2004, hitting just .223 with no home runs and 17 RBI. Gil posted excellent peripheral numbers in 2005 with the Gulf Coast League Yankees, especially for a catcher. He had a very respectable extra-base hit percentage, thanks in large part to his 11 doubles.

He was also very good in the clutch, hitting .294 with runners in scoring position. But what makes Gil so intriguing as a hitter is his patience at the plate. He finished second on the team in walks (behind De La Rossa) with 19 walks this past season, drawing one more walk than he struck out. It is that type of batting eye that could serve him well as he progresses. He figures to be in the Charleston mix among the catcher in 2006.

C.J. Henry - SS

The Yankees caught some flak from the New York media for selecting Henry over current Red Sox reliever Craig Hansen in the first round of the 2005 MLB Draft. While it isn't always prudent to take a reliever close to the first half of the draft, Henry is an athletic talent that could maybe make those same pundits eat their words in a few years. While Henry's overall .249 average in his debut season might not dispel many of those questions immediately, his peripheral numbers were quite good for a teenager in his first season of professional baseball.

Despite good raw power, Henry batted exactly half of his games in the leadoff spot in order to get him as many at-bats as possible. He finished his season with a very respectable walk ratio, extra-base hit percentage, and was successful in 17 out of his 21 stolen base attempts. So while the overall numbers may not jump off the page, his peripherals show an excellent foundation from which to build. The one area where he's going to have to improve is with runners in scoring position. Hitting just .200 in those situations this past season, Henry will get every opportunity to improve those numbers with the Charleston Riverdogs next season.

Austin Jackson - OF

Jackson, projected to be a first round talent, slid in the draft all the way down to the 8th round because of basketball commitment to Georgia Tech and could wind up being the steal of the 2005 MLB Draft. He avoided a rough first year of professional baseball by hitting .354 in his final 20 games after starting off the year hitting just .243 in his first 20 games. He showed excellent speed and good contact with the bat after getting his feet wet.

Like Henry, Jackson displayed a good eye at the plate and patience not normally exhibited by a player of his age or lack of experience. This is a trait that he'll need as he moves through the Yankees' farm system and the early signs look good. And also like Henry, Jackson will need to improve his .158 average with runners in scoring position. But both Henry and Jackson, who are just now starting to work with professional coaches, deserve an early pass. Jackson should join Henry on the Charleston Riverdogs in 2006.

Chris Malec - 2B

Drafted in the 16th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of UC-Santa Barbara, Malec reminds many of Atlanta's Marcus Giles. He can flat out hit the ball to all fields and makes excellent contact with the bat, striking out just four times in 73 at-bats. While he didn't display the extra-base hit potential many believe he has in 2005, Malec's eye at the plate (.384 batting average) could carry him a long way.

At 23 years old, he was too advanced for the Gulf Coast League. Throw in the small amount of at-bats, we'll curb our enthusiasm on him until he proves it at the higher minor league levels. The problem with Malec is that he'll have to not only hit his way up the minor league ladder, but he's going to have to hit his way into the lineup as well. With second base prospects like Mario Holmann and Reegie Corona in the system, Malec has a tough fight ahead of him. But he has the talent to make some noise.

Luis Nunez - UT
Signed by the Yankees out of Venezuela back in November of 2003, Nunez didn't play with the Yankees anywhere until he debuted with the GCL Yankees this past season. His is a special case too. Widely considered by his teammates and coaches as not only one of the best defensive players on the Gulf Coast League Yankees last season but in the entire system, Nunez is a guy managers will have to find a way to get on to the field.

He hit just .230 this past season and showed very little patience at the plate, two negatives to begin his career with the Yankees. However, he doesn't turn 19 years old until November and he now has just 126 professional at-bats under his belt, so he has time to work on his offensive game. On the plus side, Nunez can play a wide array of positions, and play them well. So getting the needed development at-bats should not be a problem. He could figure in the Charleston mix in 2006 as the team's utility player.

Joel Perez - OF

The 23-year old outfielder was drafted in the 14th round of the 2005 MLB Draft and quickly showed good power with the GCL Yankees this past season and a very patient approach at the plate. He had a very good walk ratio and an above average extra-base hit percentage, but considering his age, it is hard to tell how much of that was ability or just playing against much younger competition. Perez seems like the odd man out in the Charleston outfield mix to begin the 2006 season and the smart money says he'll be in Staten Island once the short-season leagues open up.

Nate Phillips - 3B

Selected in the sixth round of the 2004 MLB Draft, Phillips was back in the Gulf Coast League in 2005 after debuting in the same league a year ago. Ditching the experiment at catcher, the Yankees moved Phillips over to third base this past season.. Unfortunately not tremendous progress was made in his offensive numbers from a year ago, although the multiple position switches may have something to do with it.

His walk ratio stayed roughly the same and there wasn't a significant jump in his extra-base hit percentage. Now playing a power hitting position like third base, he'll need to start showing some of that power potential scouts thought he had before he was drafted. Phillips has an outside shot at seeing some time with Charleston in 2006 but the smarter money says he'll be with the Staten Island Yankees once the short-season leagues open up, which wouldn't be a bad thing for his development. Remember, he's still just be 20 years old when the 2006 season begins.

Wilmer Pino - 2B

Another Dominican Summer League product, Wilmer Pino stole 39 bases in two season with the DSL Yankees before debuting on U.S. soil this past season with the Gulf Coast League Yankees. Pino once again showed good speed, stealing 11 bases for the GCL Yankees this past season. While he showed a patient approach at the plate, especially for a 19-year old, his lack of consistent contact and production in the clutch (he hit just .152 with runners in scoring position) gave way to Christopher Malec later in the season. Considering his lack of experience, Pino will most likely be in a short-season league again in 2006.

Jose Tabata - OF

The Venezuelan product was signed by the Yankees an instantly began earning accolades as being one of the elite young talents in the Gulf Coast League. Tabata, who didn't turn 17 years old until August, is already one of the better contact hitters among the young Yankees' prospects. He displayed a good walk ratio and excellent speed on the base paths this past season, swiping 22 bases. Tabata walked one more time than he struck out and his production in the clutch, hitting .370 with runners in scoring position, is nearly unheard of for a kid his age.

Power is usually the last facet of a hitting prospect's game to develop, so we won't get too concerned with his less than stellar extra-base hit percentage, especially considering his extraordinarily young age. Tabata is not a physically imposing figure, standing 5'11". But he's built like a fire hydrant and will most assuredly hit for more power as he matures and fills out. Tabata is a rare talent and the Yankees will most likely be tempted to challenge the young hitter in the South Atlantic League next season with the Charleston Riverdogs.

\r\n
\r\nJoel Perez - OF
\r\n
\r\nThe 23-year old outfielder was drafted in the 14th round of the 2005 MLB Draft and quickly showed good power with the GCL Yankees this past season and a very patient approach at the plate.

\r\n
\r\nNate Phillips - 3B
\r\n
\r\nSelected in the sixth round of the 2004 MLB Draft, Phillips was back in the Gulf Coast League in 2005 after debuting in the same league a year ago. Ditching the experiment at catcher, the Yankees moved Phillips over to third base this past season.. Unfortunately not tremendous progress was made in his offensive numbers from a year ago, although the multiple position switches may have something to do with it.
\r\n
\r\nHis walk ratio stayed roughly the same and there wasn't a significant jump in his extra-base hit percentage.

\r\n
\r\nWilmer Pino - 2B
\r\n
\r\nAnother Dominican Summer League product, Wilmer Pino stole 39 bases in two season with the DSL Yankees before debuting on U.S. soil this past season with the Gulf Coast League Yankees.

\r\n
\r\nJose Tabata - OF
\r\n
\r\nThe Venezuelan product was signed by the Yankees an instantly began earning accolades as being one of the elite young talents in the Gulf Coast League.
\r\n
\r\nPower is usually the last facet of a hitting prospect's game to develop, so we won't get too concerned with his less than stellar extra-base hit percentage, especially considering his extraordinarily young age. Tabata is not a physically imposing figure, standing 5'11\". But he's built like a fire hydrant and will most assuredly hit for more power as he matures and fills out. Tabata is a rare talent and the Yankees will most likely be tempted to challenge the young hitter in the South Atlantic League next season with the Charleston Riverdogs.
