2005 Staten Island Position Prospect Review

The Staten Island Yankees compiled an impressive 52-24 record this season with a good combination of pitching and hitting, en route to a Championship year. We will look at the peripherals stats of hitters. PinstripesPlus will look at the guys who played a majority of the season with Staten Island, those who had a minimum of 125 at-bats with the team and did not collect more than 150 at-bats with any other team.

Kyle Anson - 3B

Drafted in the 10th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of Texas State University, Anson is not your prototypical third sacker. As hard-nosed as a player as you'll find, Anson doesn't have the power associated with playing a power hitting position like third base. His 21.2% of extra-base hits were below average and perhaps the reason he was tried at catcher during the Instructional Leagues. But what Anson lacked in power, he more than made up for with intense determination. He'll do anything to get on base, as evidenced by his exceptional walk ratio.

His .252 average is not indicative of his overall hitting ability either. He hit just .212 in his first 16 games but finished off the year strong, hitting .278 in his final 21 games. His tremendous arm and grittiness on the field makes him the frontrunner to be the starting third baseman for the Charleston Riverdogs in 2006, despite the fact he began seeing action at catcher.

James Cooper - OF

Cooper was drafted by the Yankees in the 9th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of Loyola Marymount University. And like Anson, Cooper does not great power at the plate. As we mentioned in our draft recap, Cooper doesn't have the type of power needed to play a corner outfield position. His 18.3% of extra-base hits were below the NY-Penn League average for a corner outfielder.

But like Anson, Cooper is very adept at taking pitches and drawing walks. Keep in mind that he also played the majority of the season on an injured knee and he's scheduled to have it fixed over the winter. His production with runners in scoring position was acceptable, especially considering the transition to wooden bats in the longest season he has ever played. Still, his lack of power will most likely relegate him to a reserve outfielder role with the Charleston Riverdogs in 2006.

Reegie Corona - 2B

Another International free agent signing, Gil was signed by the Yankees out of Venezuela in July of 2003 and played with the Dominican Summer League Yankees in 2004, hitting just .223 with no home runs and 17 RBI. Gil posted excellent peripheral numbers in 2005 with the Gulf Coast League Yankees, especially for a catcher. He had a very respectable extra-base hit percentage, thanks in large part to his 11 doubles.

He was also very good in the clutch, hitting .294 with runners in scoring position. But what makes Gil so intriguing as a hitter is his patience at the plate. He finished second on the team in walks (behind De La Rossa) with 19 walks this past season, drawing one more walk than he struck out. It is that type of batting eye that could serve him well as he progresses. He figures to be in the Charleston mix among the catcher in 2006.

Felipe Garcia - 1B

Drafted in the 34th round of the 2005 MLB Draft, Garcia posted decent peripheral numbers despite a lack of consistent playing time in his professional debut. As was the case with most of the Staten Island hitters, Garcia had a very good walk ratio. His 26.8% of extra-base hits was acceptable, although not great, for a reserve first baseman. Garcia's lack of production with runners in scoring position however doesn't aid his case for making a jump in levels for 2006. He'll have to beat out Larsen and Angel Fermin for a spot on the Charleston Riverdogs coming out Spring Training next season. The smart money says Garcia may possible break camp with Charleston as a reserve infielder, but won't see full-time action until the short-season leagues open up where he could find himself as Staten Island's starting first baseman in 2006.

Brett Gardner - OF

Drafted in the 3rd round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of the College of Charleston, Gardner was easily one of the more exciting players in the NY-Penn League this past season. Forgetting for a moment that he lead the team in stolen bases with 19, Gardner also lead Staten Island in walks with 39, 12 more than the next highest player. Some people may look at his five home runs and think he has good power. While the home run total was impressive for a leadoff man of his stature, the fact remains that only 18.8% of his hits went for extra-bases in his professional debut.

With his speed and hitting ability, Gardner should collect a few more extra-base hits. It is not a concern right now per se, but it does bear watching as he climbs the minor league ladder. There is no question that Gardner will break Spring Training with a long-season league. The question will be where will he start. The Yankees have an unfamiliar dilemma on their hands, a logjam of outfield prospects at the lower levels. Chances are he'll begin the 2006 season with the Charleston Riverdogs with a possible quick call-up to Tampa, but don't rule out the possibility of him starting in the Florida State League right away. The Yankees may want to challenge Austin Jackson next season which could make their promotion of Gardner, an advanced hitter, very aggressive.

Kyle Larsen - 1B

We've told the story of Kyle Larsen already. Considered one of the top talents in each of the last two drafts, Larsen inexplicably sunk like a boulder in a pool during the draft, most likely because he is a Scott Boras client. Signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Washington, where he not only hit over .370 twice but was named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year three years in a row, Larsen showed that many teams made a mistake by not drafting him. While he lead Staten Island in doubles, home runs, and RBI, Larsen's peripherals were also very impressive.

The NY-Penn League All-Star hit .349 with runners in scoring position, proving to be one of the finest clutch hitters in the entire league. His extra-base hit percentage was above average and his walk ratio was very acceptable for his professional debut. Only teammate Kyle Anson had a higher on-base percentage in 2005. The bottom line? Larsen is not your typical undrafted free agent signing. Expect to see Larsen with Charleston out of Spring Training as he and Angel Fermin project to share 1B/DH duties next year, akin to the same setup that Ben Jones and Cody Ehlers shared in 2005.

Eduardo Nunez - SS

A product of the Dominican Summer League Yankees, Nunez was signed as an International free agent back in February of 2004. In 120 games for the DSL Yankees, Nunez hit just .233 with 16 doubles, 6 triples, 3 home runs, and 21 stolen bases before making his U.S. debut with the Staten Island Yankees this past season. The 18-year old was arguably the most consistent hitter in the Staten Island lineup all season long. His overall numbers were phenomenal and there is a lot to like about his peripheral stats as well.

While his extra-base hit percentage and his walk ratio were both acceptable, especially for an 18-year old playing against much older competition, his .352 average with runners in scoring position was unreal. Nunez has barely begun the scratch the surface of his talent and his breakout year with Staten Island has put the Yankees in a bad spot. With top pick C.J. Henry, already being questioned by the New York media (although not us), needing to be challenged in Charleston next season, the question of how to fit Henry and Nunez both in the long-season leagues next season will be the most intriguing one coming out of Spring Training. One thing is certain: Nunez has proven he's ready to advance.

Drafted in the 13th round of the 2004 MLB Draft, Pilittere found his way back into the Staten Island lineup in 2005 after debuting in the NY-Penn League back in 2004. One of the smartest catchers around, Pilittere contributed a solid offensive season in Staten Island this past season. His walk ratio was acceptable and his extra-base hit percentage was quite good, especially for a catcher. With his solid 2005 campaign, Pilittere has put himself into the Charleston mix for 2006.

Jonathan Poterson - OF

A supplemental first round pick in 2004 out of Chandler High School in Arizona, Poterson is a raw power hitter in every sense of the word. After struggling with the Charleston Riverdogs in his first taste of long-season baseball this past season, Poterson was sent to Staten Island to hone his skills and build his confidence, a plan that was most likely laid out from the set of Spring Training last year. The plan seemingly worked as Poterson looked like a world beater in the first half of the NY-Penn League season, but hit just .206 with no home runs in his final 37 games.

Overall, Poterson's peripherals were pretty consistent between Charleston and Staten Island. And in this case, the peripherals don't lie. Poterson's walk ratio, while not alarming, is not where he and the Yankees would like it to be. But as evidenced by his extra-base hit percentages, when Poterson does connect, it usually is for extra-bases. Once he learns better strike zone judgment and to take a few more pitches, Poterson's entire game should take off. Despite his early season struggles with Charleston and his second-half swoon with Staten Island, Poterson should break Spring Training with Charleston next season. Remember he is still just a teenager so there's no reason to get down on him.

\r\nJonathan Poterson - OF
\r\n
\r\nA supplemental first round pick in 2004 out of Chandler High School in Arizona, Poterson is a raw power hitter in every sense of the word.
\r\n
\r\nOverall, Poterson's peripherals were pretty consistent between Charleston and Staten Island.
