2005 Staten Island Pitching Prospect Review

The Staten Island Yankees compiled an impressive 52-24 record this season with a good combination of pitching and hitting, en route to a Championship year. We will look at the peripherals stats of the pitchers. PinstripesPlus will look at the guys who played a majority of the season with Staten Island, those who had a minimum of 25 innings with the team and did not collect more than 50 innings with any other team.

Jim Conroy - RHP

Drafted in the 19th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of the University of Illinois, Conroy was one of the more pleasant surprises on what turned out to be an elite Staten Island pitching staff. He was the epitome of consistent, giving up one earned run or less in 13 of his 18 games this past season. Conroy did it all in 2005. He kept the ball in the ballpark, limited opposing batters to a .210 batting average, and was among the NY-Penn League leaders in WHIP ratio among starting pitchers.

Conroy's tremendous season puts him into a virtual lock for one of the Charleston spots in the starting rotation in 2006. As a late round pick, he'll need to continue to post the great numbers at the higher levels and prove that his professional debut season of 2005 was not a fluke. With his remarkable changeup, he could do exactly that.

Zach Kroenke - LHP

Drafted in the 5th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of the University of Nebraska, Kroenke earned a reputation as one of the better big game pitchers in college. Expected to be a leader on the Staten Island staff, Kroenke did not disappoint. While he might not be the strikeout artist that Conroy and others proved to be this past season, Kroenke chipped in with nearly a two-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio. Opposing NY-Penn League batters hit just .219 off of him. Despite a logjam of quality candidates for the Charleston pitching staff in 2006, Kroenke should be among the group.

Toni Lara - RHP

Signed as an International free agent out of the Dominican Republic back in 2002, Lara strung together two solid seasons with the Gulf Coast League Yankees in 2003 and 2004. Including his season with the Dominican Summer League Yankees back in 2002, he entered the 2005 season with a career ERA of 3.04 with 136 strikeouts in 127 1/3 innings pitched. However, the 21-year old Lara looked overmatched in the NY-Penn League this past season. His control was nothing short of ghastly, walking nearly six batters per nine innings. And while the opposing batters hit .287 off of him, it wasn't nearly as bad as giving up more than one home run per nine innings. With the depth of pitching prospects at the lower levels, Lara appears destined to begin the 2006 season in Extended Spring Training before a likely return trip to Staten Island.

Drafted in the 48th round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of Ball State University, Morrison was an elite closer in the college ranks before signing with the Yankees prior to the start of the NY-Penn League in 2005. Morrison was overshadowed by the likes of Schmidt and Stuart, but he contributed a fine season in his professional debut. His walk ratio is the lone area where improvements need to be made, but it was still very respectable. Morrison appears headed to Charleston in 2006 to secure one of the bullpen spots for the Riverdogs.

Garrett Patterson - LHP

Drafted in the 7th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma, Patterson has some of the most electric stuff among all the Yankees' pitching prospects. The majority of his peripherals are just absolutely sick. He held opposing NY-Penn League batters to a .204 batting average and struck out nearly 13 batters per nine innings pitched. The major focus for Patterson and the Yankees is learning some control. His 1.47 WHIP ratio, thanks in large part to walking nearly seven batters per nine innings, was among the highest on the Staten Island staff. Regardless, Patterson will be allowed to work on his control with the Charleston Riverdogs in 2006 where he's sure to be a fan favorite.

Lance Pendleton - RHP

Drafted in the 4th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of Rice University, Pendleton was a two-way player in college, but will be a full-time pitcher in the Yankees' farm system. Pendleton had a solid professional debut with the Staten Island Yankees before having his season ended prematurely with an injury. Like Patterson, Pendleton's main area of concern is control. The Yankees are very high on Pendleton and he appears to be a guy they will make sure to find room for on the Charleston squad in 2006.

Josh Schmidt - RHP

Drafted in the 15th round of the 2005 MLB Draft out of Pacific University, there's not much else that can be said about Schmidt's debut with the Staten Island Yankees this past season. He simply dominated in every facet of the game. Not too many pitchers finish an entire season with a WHIP ratio nearly three times as high as their ERA as Schmidt did in 2005. His strikeout-to-walk ratio, better than 6-to-1, is typical of the type of year he had. He'll be the anchor in the Charleston bullpen to begin the 2006 season as the team's closer.

Steve Schroer - RHP

Signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of California-Irvine, Schroer pitched with fellow Yankee farmhand Brett Smith in college. And Smith, even though he pitched at higher levels, wished his professional debut went as smoothly as Schroer's. Overshadowed by the like of Schmidt and Stuart, Schroer's success should not be underestimated. He held opposing batters to a .176 batting average and sported a 3-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He allowed less than one base runner per inning pitched and he'll almost assuredly be joining the "Killer S's" in the Charleston bullpen in 2006.

David Seccombe - RHP

Originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2004 MLB Draft, the Red Sox' trash became the Yankees' treasure in 2005. Seccombe was as impressive as Jim Conroy for Staten Island. While he may not have struck out as many as Conroy, he certainly was as consistent. His eight wins lead the club and he held opposing batters to a pathetic .178 average on the year. The emergence of Seccombe has given the Yankees a great problem to have - too much depth at the starting pitcher's position heading into next season. Seccombe was one of the older pitchers on the staff. At 23 years old, the Yankees may want to challenge him. He should be in Charleston to begin the 2006 season, but a jump up to Tampa is not out of the question.

Hairo Solis - RHP

Originally signed by the San Francisco Giants out of the Dominican Republic in 2001, Holis was selected by the Yankees in the Rule V Draft back in December of 2004 after posting a 3.25 ERA in 22 games for the Giants in rookie ball. Solis didn't miss a beat after making the jump up to the NY-Penn League, posting a 3.23 ERA with Staten Island. His game is all about control, walking a little more than two batters per nine innings. Solis should follow suite with the likes of Schmidt, Stuart, Seccombe, and Schroer to keep the gang together in Charleston next season.

Jason Stephens - RHP

Drafted in the 6th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, Stephens pitched two consecutive seasons with the Gulf Coast League Yankees. In 2004, Stephens put up some impressive numbers (5-3, 2.61 ERA, 48 K in 48.1 innings), so much so that he appeared to be a frontrunner for a spot in the Charleston rotation this past season. A numbers crunch forced him back into Extended Spring Training until he became of the leaders for the Staten Island Yankees. Stephens, as evidenced by his walk ratio below, is a control pitcher with good breaking pitches. With Justin Berg having been traded, Stephens appears to be a shoe-in for a spot with the Riverdogs in 2006.

Cory Stuart - RHP

Drafted in the 5th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, Stuart had pitched a grant total of four innings in the Yankees' organization the last two seasons because of arm troubles. Back and healthy for the first time as a professional, Stuart had a whale of a year. He was just as dominating as Josh Schmidt and the two of them combined to be the league's most lethal weapon in the NY-Penn League. But as phenomenal a year as it was for him, including nearly striking out 14 batters per nine innings, the fact that he remained healthy was the most telling stat. Stuart should be a major cog in the Charleston bullpen to start the 2006 season, but he's a strong candidate to get promoted quickly to make up for lost time.

Another product of the Dominican Summer League Yankees, Villalona had pitched in the Gulf Coast League three straight years, including the start of the 2005 season, before earning a promotion to Staten Island back on August 7th. Villalona, while not overpowering, is a very consistent pitcher. His control is impeccable, a big reason why he's adept at keeping runners off the base paths. Now 23 years old, time is of the essence to see what Villalona can bring to the table. He'll be one of the many pitching prospects considered for the Charleston bullpen in 2006.

\r\nOriginally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2004 MLB Draft, the Red Sox' trash became the Yankees' treasure in 2005.

\r\n
\r\nHairo Solis - RHP
\r\n
\r\nOriginally signed by the San Francisco Giants out of the Dominican Republic in 2001, Holis was selected by the Yankees in the Rule V Draft back in December of 2004 after posting a 3.25 ERA in 22 games for the Giants in rookie ball.

\r\n
\r\nJason Stephens - RHP
\r\n
\r\nDrafted in the 6th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, Stephens pitched two consecutive seasons with the Gulf Coast League Yankees.

\r\n
\r\nCory Stuart - RHP
\r\n
\r\nDrafted in the 5th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, Stuart had pitched a grant total of four innings in the Yankees' organization the last two seasons because of arm troubles.

\r\n
\r\nGuillermo Villalona - RHP
\r\n
\r\nAnother product of the Dominican Summer League Yankees, Villalona had pitched in the Gulf Coast League three straight years, including the start of the 2005 season, before earning a promotion to Staten Island back on August 7th.
