2005 Tampa Pitching Prospect Review

We look at the peripherals stats of the Tampa pitchers this past season, examining the guys who played a majority of the season with Tampa, those who had a minimum of 30 innings with the team and did not collect more than 30 innings at a higher level.

Heath Castle - LHP

Drafted in the 16th round of the 2003 draft out of the University of Kentucky, Castle entered the 2005 season with a 5.85 career ERA before becoming a valuable member of the Tampa bullpen this past season. While his 2.55 ERA was a welcomed sight, the fact is his peripherals weren't nearly as good. In fact, Castle's ERA in 2005 was an aberration when looking at his peripherals. Opposing batters hit .292 off of him and he allowed more than one and half base runners per inning pitched. If Castle keeps posting those type of peripherals, it is highly unlikely that his ERA will be that low again. He's left-handed though and he did enough to be a part of the Trenton bullpen in 2006.

Tyler Clippard - RHP

T-Clip was drafted by the Yankees in the 9th round of the 2003 MLB Draft out of high school and has been nothing but the epitome of control ever since. In fact, among the Florida State League leaders in walk ratio this past season, Clippard's career walk ratio actually rose after his 2005 performance, which is truly amazing. He struck out better than ten batters per nine innings on the year, allowed just a shade over one base runner per inning pitched, and limited opposing batters to a pathetic .219 average. If there's one small area of concern in Clippard's peripherals is his propensity to give up the long ball. It was his second straight year serving up at least 12 home runs. Still, we're nit-picking. Look for Clippard to be a mainstay in the Trenton rotation in 2006.

J. Brent Cox - RHP

We realize he didn't have the 30 inning minimum we set forth for this article. We just had to show his peripherals in his professional debut with the Tampa Yankees. They were amazingly consistent with his dominating final season with the College World Series Champion Longhorns this past season. Granted it was a small sample size, but Cox actually improved his walk ratio from college into his first taste as a professional pitcher. Cox should break camp with the AA-Trenton Thunder to start the 2006 season and a possible call up to the Bronx next season is certainly not out of the question.

Michael Gardner - RHP

Drafted in the 13th round of the 2003 MLB Draft out of Miami-Ohio, Gardner continues to be solid coming out of the bullpen. After posting a 3.40 ERA in 43 appearances for Battle Creek in 2004, Gardner put up eerily similar numbers with Tampa in 2005. The 24-year old Kentucky native had a very good numbers across the board once again and he continues to fly under the radar. Gardner will most likely quietly secure a spot in the Trenton bullpen and the safe bet is he'll post numbers akin to those in 2005.

Abel Gomez - LHP

The 20-year old southpaw was originally signed by the Yankees back in 2002 out of the Dominican Republic and was quickly rising the prospect rankings until a mid-season collapse stunned his development. Gomez, who has always been a guy who walks too many batters, walked nearly six batters per nine innings with Tampa before being sent down to Charleston to work on his control. From that point on, Gomez' season just deteriorated. Armed with electric stuff, the only thing holding Gomez back is his lack of control. Gomez should be back with Tampa in 2006 if he can show any sort of better command in Spring Training.

Drafted in the 6th round of the 2002 MLB Draft out of Grand Rapids Community College, Harmsen had a rough go of it in 2005 with the Tampa Yankees. We said a year ago that Harmen's overall numbers would catch up to his lackluster peripherals and that was certainly the case with Tampa this past season. Opposing Florida State League batters hit .333 of of him. Harmsen, a control pitcher, looked like a completely different pitcher coming out of the Charleston bullpen. His days as a starting pitcher in the Yankees' organization appear to be over. He'll most likely be back in Tampa in 2006, this time as a full-time reliever, hoping to put up numbers similar to his time with Charleston.

Jason Jones - RHP

Jones, drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of Liberty University, had a phenomenal professional debut with the Staten Island and Battle Creek Yankees in 2004. Arguably one of the better control pitchers in the Yankees' farm system, Jones got hit incredibly hard with the Tampa Yankees in 2005. How hard did he get hit? He gave up nearly one and half base runners per inning pitched in 2005 despite having one of the best walk ratios in all of minor league baseball! There was nothing in his 2004 peripherals to suggest getting hit that often, so Jones may get a mulligan from the Yankees. He could be in Tampa to start the 2006 season, but a numbers crunch may force him into the Trenton rotation instead. His Spring Training in 2006 will dictate where he starts.

Jeff Kennard - RHP

Drafted in the 40th round of the 2000 MLB Draft out of Rend Lake College, Kennard has been a solid reliever in the Yankees' farm system over his career, but has also been somewhat of an enigma. As his walk ratio shows in the table below, Kennard walks a few too many batters, perhaps a big reason why he pitched in his four consecutive year with Tampa. In fact, in his career, Kennard's walk ratio (5.14) is much higher than his ERA (3.13). He continues to pitch himself into trouble and then out of trouble. The 24-year old Kennard should be a fixture in the Trenton bullpen in 2006 and could see significant time with Columbus as well.

Jeremy King - RHP

Drafted in the 6th round of the 2000 MLB Draft out of high school, King had another solid year with the Tampa Yankees in 2005. In the case of King, it might be beneficial to both parties if the Yankees would pick a lane with King and either keep him in the rotation or the bullpen instead of throwing him into both roles. But as King's peripherals show below, there really isn't a category where King didn't do a solid a job. His control in 2005 was the best it had been in two years, so his improvement is encouraging. He'll most likely start the year in Trenton, but the free agent to be in the 2006 offseason, needs to be challenged and should see significant time with the Columbus Clippers next year.

Marvin Moscat - RHP

Moscat made a name for himself with a very good performance in the Gulf Coast League in 2004, pitching against much younger competition. Pitching a majority of the year with Tampa in 2005, the 23-year old reliever, despite a very good 3.29 ERA, looked a little more human. His peripherals suggest his ERA was a bit fluky. His strikeout-to-walk ratio was well below 2-1, opposing batters hit .280 off of him, and he allowed almost one a half base runners per inning pitched. Moscat should be in the Trenton bullpen in 2006, but facing competition more his own age, it would be not surprising if he struggles.

Elvys Quezada - RHP

Drafted in the 15th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, Quezada had started every game he had pitched in the Yankees' farm system as a starter until breaking Spring Training this past season as a reliever with the Tampa Yankees. Quezada's transition to the bullpen didn't go over as smoothly and as quickly as the Yankees had hoped. He walked nearly two more batters per nine innings than he had in his career, which was a big reason why his WHIP ratio was so surprisingly bad. Quezada ironed out his issues with Charleston and he should get tested again in the Tampa bullpen in 2006.

Brett Smith - RHP

Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of the University of California-Irvine, Smith had what many would consider a disappointing season. Before prospect followers get too down on his 2005 season, keep in mind it was his first professional season and that his peripheral numbers suggest his year wasn't as bad as many people would lead you to believe. The bottom line is his WHIP ratio was among the best in the Yankees' farm system among starting pitching prospects, as was his walk ratio. The one baffling number was the lack of strikeouts with Tampa. His walk ratio was less than half of what it was with Charleston. Smith gets a pass on his 2005 performance and he should be back in Tampa to start the 2006 season where his peripherals suggest better numbers should be expected.

Drafted in the 31st of the 2002 MLB Draft out of Baylor University, Thorp had a solid year as the Tampa closer. In fact, his peripherals were very good. Much has been made of tremendous first half of the season and his dreadful second half. His overall season numbers were exactly in the middle. His walk ratio was right in line with his career totals. In fact, aside from his ERA, all of his peripherals in 2005 were close to his career averages. Thorp did more than enough in 2005 to deserve a spot in the Trenton bullpen in 2006. With Cox around however, Thorp will most likely assume a set-up role until Cox is promoted.

\r\n
\r\nJason Jones - RHP
\r\n
\r\nJones, drafted in the 4th round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of Liberty University, had a phenomenal professional debut with the Staten Island and Battle Creek Yankees in 2004.

\r\n
\r\nJeff Kennard - RHP
\r\n
\r\nDrafted in the 40th round of the 2000 MLB Draft out of Rend Lake College, Kennard has been a solid reliever in the Yankees' farm system over his career, but has also been somewhat of an enigma.

\r\n
\r\nJeremy King - RHP
\r\n
\r\nDrafted in the 6th round of the 2000 MLB Draft out of high school, King had another solid year with the Tampa Yankees in 2005.

\r\n
\r\nMarvin Moscat - RHP
\r\n
\r\nMoscat made a name for himself with a very good performance in the Gulf Coast League in 2004, pitching against much younger competition.

\r\nElvys Quezada - RHP
\r\n
\r\nDrafted in the 15th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, Quezada had started every game he had pitched in the Yankees' farm system as a starter until breaking Spring Training this past season as a reliever with the Tampa Yankees.

\r\n
\r\nBrett Smith - RHP
\r\n
\r\nDrafted in the 2nd round of the 2004 MLB Draft out of the University of California-Irvine, Smith had what many would consider a disappointing season.

\r\nPaul Thorp - RHP
\r\n
\r\nDrafted in the 31st of the 2002 MLB Draft out of Baylor University, Thorp had a solid year as the Tampa closer.
