Top 100 New York Prospects: 61-80

Combining the Mets and Yankees prospects into one large talent pool, here are the Top 100 New York prospects. Making a couple adjustments from our original Top 50 Yankees' prospects to accomodate the losses and additions from this offseason, here are the prospects ranked 61-80 in the second installment of our five-part series.

61. Jeremy King, RHP, Yankees: King is arguably one of the more versatile pitchers from either farm system. He has two different out pitches, throwing a big curveball in the 72-78 MPH range to get lefties out and a hard-tight slider around 80-83 MPH to get righties out. With an average Major League fastball in the 88-91 MPH range, King has shown success as both a starter and a reliever.

62. John Urick, 1B, Yankees: The grandson of the legendary Whitey Herzog, Urick projects to be a John Olerud type. He doesn't have the prolific power of a large-market first baseman, but he possesses excellent gap power and a good eye at the plate. He's a very good hitter who only ranks this low because of Eric Duncan's reported move to first base, whose power potential makes him a better Major League prospect at first base.

63. Justin Christian, 2B, Yankees: One scout was quoted as saying that Christian would be one of the top prospects in all of baseball if not for his age (25). He's a patient hitter with tremendous speed and good power for a leadoff man. His age and average to below average defense at second base will force him into a utility role. He's one of the most exciting offensive players from either farm system.

64. Josh Schmidt, RHP, Yankees: His professional debut with the Staten Island Yankees was as dominant as they come. Armed with a tremendous slider that is too advanced for the lower levels, Schmidt needs to be challenged in 2006. While a superb closer at the minor league level, Schmidt's average fastball (88-92 MPH) limits his projection as a closer type at the Major League level.

65. Kole Strayhorn, RHP, Mets: Unlike Schmidt, Strayhorn is a power arm who sits 92-95 MPH with his fastball and can bring it in the high 90's at times. Once a starter at the lower minor league levels, Strayhorn has an extensive repertoire for a reliever, including a very good slider that serves as his other out pitch. Recent health concerns bump him down in the rankings, but when he's healthy, he's awfully good.

66. Jim Conroy, RHP, Yankees: Armed with one of the best changeups in either farm system, Conroy uses a deceptive delivery with his plus changeup to disguise it as his curveball. He compliments his changeup with a slurvy curveball and a solid fastball that can top out at 94 MPH. His command is superb and he mixes up his pitches and speeds very well, much in the same manner as a Greg Maddux type.

67. Marcelo Perez, RHP, Mets: Perez is one of the more intriguing relief pitching prospects. Like the Yankees' Justin Christian, Perez has been a little old for his levels. He is armed with a power fastball in the 91-94 MPH and can top out at 97 MPH with regularity. Perez also throws a hard slider in the 83-85 MPH range. His problem has been a lack of control thus far. He has wicked stuff and once he learns better command of his pitches, his stock could rise in a hurry.

68. Alhaji Turay, OF, Mets: One of the best raw power hitters in either farm system, Turay is an outfielder in a linebacker's body. Not one of the better contact hitters, Turay's development has been stalled with a series of various injuries that have kept him off the field. He has a good arm and good speed, but until he can stay on the field long enough for a full season, a feat he hasn't accomplished ever since being drafted in 2001 in the round after David Wright, Turay's value to the Mets isn't very high.

69. Miguel Pinango, RHP, Mets: Like Turay, Pinango has battled injuries over the last couple of seasons, costing him significant development time. When he's healthy, he's one of the premier control pitchers in the game. He has walked just a shade over one batter per nine innings in his career. Very slight of build, combined with his rash of injuries, limits his projection as a starting pitcher.

70. Rudy Guillen, OF, Yankees: Like Alhaji Turay of the Mets, Guillen is a gifted outfielder that has fallen on hard times with an array of injuries. Once considered a top five-tool talent, Guillen's power has been thwarted by an ankle injury the last two seasons. He has one of the better outfield arms and when he's on the top of his game, there are few better than him. The problem for Guillen has been staying healthy consistently enough to be on top of his game.

71. Cory Stuart, RHP, Yankees: Stuart, like Schmidt, has a plus slider that can be a truly dominating pitch. He has excellent command of his slider and will throw it in any count and in any situation. He throws a little harder than Schmidt, averaging 91-93 MPH with his fastball. Chronic elbow problems limited Stuart to just four innings over his first two professional seasons. It is that reason he ranks as low on this list. His talent is unquestioned but he needs to prove he can remain healthy for a full year.

72. Aaron Hathaway, C, Mets: One of the better defensive catchers around, Hathaway is also quite the athlete behind the plate. He proved to be a better hitter in 2005 than he was in his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2004. He doesn't project to hit for enough power to be an everyday catcher at the Major League level, but his defensive ability will carry him to the big leagues.

73. Rafael Cova, RHP, Mets: Cova is a bigger-bodied and starting pitching version of Marcelo Perez. Cova is armed with an electric fastball that sits 94-96 MPH and wicked secondary pitches. However, like Perez, Cova is very raw despite being a little bit older for his levels (he'll be 24-years old next season). He needs to improve his command. If he can make marked improvements with his control, Cova's stuff is nasty enough to skyrocket through the rankings.

74. Jason Jones, RHP, Yankees: On the opposite side of the spectrum from Cova is Jason Jones. Jones is not a power pitcher by any means. He's the epitome of a control pitcher that simply doesn't walk batters. Armed with a fastball in the 88-92 MPH range, Jones compliments his repertoire with a good curveball, a developing changeup, and a nasty slider in the 81-83 MPH range. He's not as bad as his 2005 stats would indicate and 2006 will be a pivotal year in determining his place in the Yankees' farm system.

75. Royce Ring, LHP, Mets: Once considered a possible left-handed closer or setup man, Ring has become more of a left-handed specialist out of the bullpen. With right-handed batters hitting nearly 200 points better against him than left-handed batters, Ring's value to the Mets' has decreased significantly since coming over in the Roberto Alomar trade. Once a power pitcher in college, Ring now relies more on his changeup and slider these days.

76. Joe Hietpas, C, Mets: Easily one of the best defensive catchers in either farm system, and the personal favorite target of many pitchers, Hietpas' bat is the only thing preventing him from becoming a big league starting catcher. A good hitter in batting practice, Hietpas hasn't been able to duplicate the same kind of offensive success in game situations. His defense is tremendous enough for him to be a quality backstop for many years.

77. Greg Ramirez, RHP, Mets: Ramirez is very much like the Yankees' Jason Jones. He despises walking batters and uses a solid repertoire to mix up his pitches and speeds to keep hitters off-balance. His bread and butter pitch is his curveball, which sits in the 69-72 MPH range. The slow development of his changeup and slider is the only thing preventing him from climbing the rankings. He's a solid "sleeper" among the pitching prospects.

78. Jonathan Niese, LHP, Mets: One of the younger pitchers in the Mets' farm system to make this list, Niese is arguably the left-handed pitching prospect with the highest upside for the Mets. He averages 88-91 MPH with his fastball and he can bring it as high as 94 MPH at times. He doesn't have the electric stuff of Scott Kazmir, but his combination of control and stuff are very solid. His lack of experience is the only thing preventing from climbing the charts and he's got the potential to quickly climb the rankings in the next couple of seasons.

79. Jason Stephens, RHP, Yankees: Stephens has a long, loopy curveball that looks more impressive than it actually is effective. It has been a dominating pitch for him at the lower levels but he'll need to learn to tighten it up and throw it harder for it to be effective against advanced hitters. His fastball sits in the 87-89 MPH range and his changeup, while having a lot of projection to it, needs some work. His control is impeccable but he has a long way to go towards reaching his potential and fighting off all the competition in what has become a very deep pitching organization.

80. Bronson Sardinha, OF, Yankees: Sardinha has tremendous upside offensively, but five years into his development since being drafted in the first round, Sardinha's time is running out. He's a gap-to-gap hitter who will rack up a lot of doubles with occasional home run power. However, with his defensive liabilities limiting him to the corner outfield spot, Sardinha just hasn't shown the type of power to be a legitimate starting outfielder at the Major League level. 2006 will be a make-or-break year in his future with the Yankees.
