If there is one enormous strength of the Yankee farm system, it is their vast collection of arms. With high ceilings, good fastballs and projectability, we now rank the top ten control pitchers among pitching prospects in the Yankee farm system. (Free Preview!)

10) Jim Conroy - One of the biggest surprises of the 2005 season, much of Jim Conroy's success was achieved from his superb control and command. While he may not be able to attack the strike zone as much as he was able to in college and in his first professional season, he does possess crisp enough stuff to be successful at the higher levels. But, no one will ever have to worry about Conroy failing them because of control issues. He'll make you earn a win against him.

9) Jason Stephens - He grew up watching Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine. And, after an excellent showing with Staten Island in 2005, it certainly looks as if he has learned a thing or two from them about throwing strikes and hitting spots. In 2004, he averaged just under two walks per nine innings pitched while striking out nearly nine per nine innings. And, in 2005, he walked approximately 2.5 per nine innings of work. Stephens is a very intelligent pitcher and his control seems to be only getting better with more experience in professional baseball.

8) Jeff Karstens - Karstens is a ground ball pitcher with great control who can also pick up a fair amount of strikeouts. The fact that he challenges batters and forces them to swing at his pitches is the reason the Yankees are so high on him. He is able to hit spots very well because he is highly mechanically advanced. Jeff does not have overpowering stuff so his control is going to continue to be key for him. His control within the strike zone will continue to be more important than just his low walk totals, however.

7) Josh Schmidt - In his first professional season, Josh Schmidt was simply out of this world, and that is an understatement. Everyone looks at the monstrous strikeout totals, but we have to remember how impressive his control was with Staten Island. In fact, he averaged 2.18 walks per nine innings, so it is apparent that he was not just a strikeout pitcher, but a tremendous control artist as well.

6) Tyler Clippard - Well, everyone was blown away when T-Clip put on an outstanding display of control in his professional debut, but when he kept the control on in a full season, people really began to chat about it. But, in an outstanding breakout 2005 season, Clippard showed the great control and the ability to strike a hitter out. He has command of all three of his pitches, his fastball, curveball and changeup. In 2005, the lanky right-hander averaged a shade over two walks per nine innings pitched, while also placing among the minor league leaders in strikeouts. Again, he proved to be very aggressive and trusts every pitch in his arsenal.

5) Eric Hacker - Although he is not your typical finesse pitcher, Hacker does rely very much on his excellent control. But, unlike some other prospects, Hacker is more concerned with control within the strike zone, meaning he isn't just going to pound the strike zone. Instead, he is going for the corners and moving the ball side to side, and north and south. But, make no mistake, his 2.03 walks per nine innings is still very impressive.

4) J. Brent Cox - Cox has a bulldog mentality on the mound that allowed him to be one of the nation's elite college closers with the Texas Longhorns in 2005. And, when he arrived in the pros, the great control that assisted him in his college career hadn't left him. J.B. walked only 1.65 batters per nine innings in only his first taste of professional baseball. He goes right after batters and pounds the strike zone with sinking fastballs and hard sliders in the lower half of the plate. Cox, while he has been a very good strikeout pitcher over the years, isn't afraid to allow batters to put the ball in play and let his defense work behind him. The movement he generates with his pitches controls left-handed batters.

3) Jason Jones - Although just about everything else failed him in 2005, Jones' continued to make hitters earn their way on base. Yes, often times, they earned their way on base quite a bit as his ERA soared above five, but Jason never became bat shy. In fact, he walked only 1.4 hitters per nine innings of work. Given that he is always around the plate with merely average stuff tells us that he should continue to give up a glut of hits, but if he works on the corners, he should be effective.

2) Eric Wordekemper - One walk in 29 innings of work really does speak for itself. In his first taste of professional baseball, that's exactly what Eric did. Not only did he hold his walk totals to almost nothing, but the control specialist also led the GCL Yankees with big performances down the stretch in their championship run. While his stuff may not scare too many hitters as he moves up the minor league ladder, Wordekemper's pinpoint control will allow him to remain very effective.

1) Phil Hughes - Hughes, known for his power fastball and pure stuff, actually makes his living with his outstanding control. And, not only is his control as good, if not better, than most college groomed prospects, but it still has room for improvement given that he is still only 19 years old. Phil walked 2.11 per nine innings in 2005, but that only figures to decrease as he matures and learns how to attack professional hitters. And, the fact that he is still learning despite his already fabulous control is simply incredible.
