Yankees Nab USC Ace, Ian Kennedy In 1st Round

After much anticipation, the New York Yankees first round selection is finally official. The Yankees have selected University of Southern California right-hander, Ian Kennedy with the 21st overall pick in the 2006 draft.

With the 21st overall pick in the draft, the Yankees selected Ian Kennedy, who has become a USC legend over the past three years. While he doesn't possess power stuff, he has also been quite a strikeout artist over the course of his college career. He is represented by Scott Boras so the negotiation process may be difficult for the Yankees.

Despite the hype about Kennedy, he struggled somewhat in 2006, losing some velocity off his fastball. However, he still managed to go 5-7 with a 3.90 ERA in 101.2 innings of work for the Trojans. In that time, he also struck out 102 while walking only 36. If and when he signs, he figures to move quickly through the Yankee farm system. Kennedy depends on fantastic command, so we'll see if his strikeout ability translates to the professional ranks.
