Q&A with Nardi Contreras

Nardi Contreras, the Yankees Minor League Pitching Coordinator, sits down with PinstripesPlus.com for a Q&A session. In Part One of our six-part series, Nardi talks about the progress of Phil Hughes, why Tyler Clippard was so dominant in the second half of the year, if he believes Christian Garcia is fully committed to being the best, what he saw from Jeff Marquez in 2006, and more.

PinstripesPlus.com: In your opinion, which pitching prospect made the most progress to his game in 2006?

Nardi Contreras: Phil Hughes. From somebody who never had a curveball to be voted as having the best curveball in the Eastern League. The changeup came around really nice. I mean he dominated the league - he just dominated - just completely dominated the Eastern League. We always knew the fastball was there, we always knew the command of the fastball was there, but the curveball became outstanding and the changeup is a Major League average changeup. So yes, I would say Phil Hughes.

PinstripesPlus: Is he still throwing the changeup often? I've heard from a couple of scouts who say he never throws it in a game?

Contreras: We work at ten percent and that's because we know he's going to need it in the big leagues. He could have gotten by with the command of his fastball and his curveball the whole season without having to use his changeup in the Eastern League this year. He will need it more and more the higher he goes. He will need it at the big league level. He will need it when he gets into that 2-1 count and they are sitting on a 95 MPH fastball and he can throw that 82 MPH changeup to get those guys out in front. It's awesome. Let those scouts continue to be scouts. Hopefully they don't think he has a good fastball because he'll be in the big leagues with the New York Yankees and he'll have three pitches to go with him.

PinstripesPlus: It was a different type of year for Christian Garcia with the injuries and all. What did you see from him when he did pitch? What did you think of Garcia in 2006?

Contreras: Well Chris Garcia was just full of injuries. He had the oblique and after he came back from that he started throwing and he was sore with his arm and we just shut him down. You know how quickly we shut guys down. Then he started throwing again, had a good game here [Gulf Coast League], then he had a couple of bad games, he lost his cool, then he pitched well, then he went to Charleston, had a great game, then he fell in love with his changeup instead of using his over 95 MPH fastball. He's got what it takes to be a dominant type of pitcher in the big leagues. He's got the fastball 91-95 MPH, he's got the life with his fastball, he can throw it to location, he's got a big-time curveball, and he's got the big, big-time changeup now. So he's got it all. Now it's about what Christian Garcia does out on the mound and keeps his head together and he pitches like he's capable of. He pitched two innings here [Instructs] before he went to Hawaii and it was a man among boys. He punched out five guys and he made it look easy. They [the Pirate] had a Major League guy who was rehabbing - Brad Eldred - and he threw two fastballs right by him and threw a changeup to strike him out and it was that easy for Chris. He can be a tremendous Major League pitcher, now Christian Garcia's got to grow up and be that.

PinstripesPlus: Well talk about that a little bit. How did he progress mentally? Did you see the work ethic from him, the commitment to be the best from him?

Contreras: You know, he would work on what he felt he needed to work at instead of going about it all the time. The commitment was not full-time. If it was, he would have been pitching way up higher. Because he got healthy enough to go up and pitch us some good innings and do some stuff, but the complete commitment was not there the whole time. If it was, he could have been pitching a lot higher, a lot quicker. Before, at this mini-camp before he went to Hawaii, he pitched well and we spoke to him. Hopefully [in] Hawaii, Scotty Aldred is there, the pitching coach he had in Charleston, and that he's committed. And if he's committed, he can pitch in the big leagues.

PinstripesPlus: Jeff Marquez, like Garcia, dealt with some injuries this past season, but when I saw him pitch, he looked the best that I had ever seen him pitch. What did you see from Marquez this year?

Contreras: His delivery continues to get better and better. He's maturing also, so he's getting the right idea of what it takes to be a professional, a professional baseball player right now. His work habits have gotten better. The use of his mind, the mental part of the game, has gotten better. We know he's got the big league fastball, same way, 91-95 MPH. He's got the great sinking life on his fastball. He's got the great power changeup. And his curveball has developed much better again. He's throwing a curveball at the same slot as his fastball and his changeup, which is a great improvement where he's going to be able to get more strikeouts. I think in his last outing in Tampa he had nine strikeouts in whatever - six innings. That's the stuff he is capable of doing with his curveball, with the fastball and the changeup of course with it. I believe that he has matured and I expect a lot of great things out of Jeff Marquez.

PinstripesPlus: Marquez seemed to be throwing a lot more four-seam fastballs this year. The Jeff Marquez I knew two years ago would hardly throw a four-seam fastball. Is that something that has been preached to him more?

Contreras: Why of course because he has the ability to power with his fastball. The four-seamer is more of a power fastball, it's more of a location pitch where he can go up and in to a left-handed batter and he can go down and away to a right-hander where the ball is true, and that's what it is, it's true. We don't have to worry about the ball moving over across the plate where he would get a lot of contact and give up a lot of hits. So using the four-seam fastball jumps on you a lot faster. There's places for the two-seam fastball, there's places for the sinker, and there's places for the four-seamer. It's not that he's becoming a four-seam fastball pitcher, he's still two-seam life, sink, tail, with use of the four-seam also for different situations.

PinstripesPlus: Tyler Clippard, now I don't want to say he had a terrible first half, but his first and second halves of the season were like night and day. What was he doing the second half of the season for the big turnaround?

Contreras: Tyler's stuff stayed the same, but Tyler's delivery just got better, direction, hands, separation, he's getting the balance better, less rotation of his body, more direction towards home plate with his front foot and his shoulder allowed him to pitch the ball down with his fastball and pitch down and away with his fastball, or up and in to a left-hander with his fastball instead of being a lot of zone strikes. Clippard has never had a problem throwing strikes. It's just that most of his strikes with his fastball were arm-side. And the higher you go in the zone you better be able to go far-side. So you're talking from a right-hander where he's throwing from that angle, instead of being inside to a right-hander, be down and away to a right-hander, being down and away from a lefty, be up and in to a lefty. He was now being able to do that with the mixture of his very good curveball - he's got a plus curveball - and he's got an excellent, plus changeup. So now those two offspeed pitches with his location of his fastball, now hitters had to worry about the location of his fastball instead of just looking in one area with his fastball.

PinstripesPlus: A lot has been made by other media types and some fans about his velocity. In your opinion, does that really matter?

Contreras: No it doesn't, if you're able to command the fastball. If you're not able to command the fastball, it sure does matter. If you're just going to throw a fastball, middle to middle in on a righty or middle to middle out on a lefty, then they're looking in that area. You can't just throw curveballs and changeups the whole time. Everything keys off the fastball. The higher they are the hitters, the more they'll be able to spit and not worry about the changeup and the curveball because it has to be a command type of pitch. It's easier to command the fastball when the delivery is right. 90 MPH is not slow, especially when you've got a curveball and a changeup like he has. So when he's able to throw that fastball with location, and mix in his changeup and curveball, which he has quality plus curveball and a quality plus changeup, a 90 MPH fastball, there's nothing wrong with that. Did he lead the Eastern League in strikeouts? I think he did, and he did it with a 90 MPH fastball because he got better command of what he's able to do with his fastball.

PinstripesPlus: Steven White had a great year in Trenton and went to AAA-Columbus and struggled. Was it just the change in competition or was there something different about his game?

Contreras: Well when he first got there [AAA], in his first game, he pitched really well. His second game, he did not pitch as well, and then the third game, the fourth game, he started struggling. He started trying to do too many things against those triple-A hitters. But in his last couple or three outings, he pitched seven innings the last two or three outings he pitched. He started clicking again, gaining confidence, and staying within himself. Steve White has a Major League fastball, four-seam and two-seam with life, a Major League curveball, and a Major League changeup. What happened around that third game, he might have faltered a little bit and then started respecting the hitters too much, trying to be too fine, trying to do too much with his fastball instead of staying in that 91-94 MPH range, trying to throw it 95, 96, or 97 MPH, instead of staying within himself. So yeah, he struggled after the second or third game, and then the last two or three games he got himself clicking again. He learned the competition is different between double-A and triple-A. You can get away with a lot more at double-A. I always give him the example of Kent Bottenfield who might have been a Cy Young Award winner with the Cardinals one year, or something like that. He went to double-A and was something like 10-15 or something like that. He learned it, 14-9 or ten the next year. First year in triple-A, 9-15, second year, 13-7 or something like that and he went to the big leagues. So he learned how to make the adjustments in the struggles that he had. With the competition, you learn there are some things you've got to do. You stay within instead of trying to do too much. When you start trying to do too much, you start losing locations, you start losing the snap of your curveball, the movement of your changeup. The same thing happened to Jeff Karstens. He was trying to get too much movement with his changeup, really hump up on his curveball, being too fine with his fastball instead of trusting his stuff. He went back [to double-A] and excelled and went to the big leagues this year. He's pitched his game.

PinstripesPlus: Chase Wright had an unbelievable year, even being named the Florida State League pitcher of the year. Obviously his control has gotten better over the last two or three years, but is there anything different in his arsenal that has made him a better pitcher?

Contreras: Last year was maybe the second time I went in to Charleston, he was a pitcher that was three-quarter high. Most of his fastballs was mid-thigh to the neck. He couldn't control the stuff from there. His stuff was flat. He got tail action with his two-seam. His breaking ball was very inconsistent. So I decided to drop his arm angle to a three-quarter low from where he was at. So the last third of the season [in 2005] he started learning that location, that delivery, that arm slot. So when he got to Spring Training this year he was at a new arm slot. He started out in the bullpen because he still wasn't able to command his pitches from the lower slot. Once he got some innings in as a reliever and he started to get the feel of his slot, he became a starter. Now this year, the majority of his pitches, when he missed he was down below the zone. So now he was sinking the ball down, the changeup became a lot of life to it. He still pitched in, but he pitched in to good spots. The only other part he still had not had was his breaking ball. His breaking ball would still stay high on him. He tried, but it stayed up. So he pitched this year with a majority of use of his two-seam fastball, his four-seam fastball, and his changeup from a low three-quarter slot and he dealt because he stayed down in the zone with a lot of life. He was a mini-camp to figure out and accomplish the same slot with his breaking ball. We're not looking for a 12-6 curveball, we're looking for the curveball that kind of sweeps and angles. He did a BP of 35 pitches where the hitters knew what was coming and he threw the ball really well. He got some miss swings, he got guys to top the ball, foul the ball off, but nothing where they had put the hit into the ball. He was very successful and we'll continue that. The two-seam he has, the four-seamer he has, and the changeup he has. Here's a lefty, and lefties are premiums, that can get both lefties and righties out. Once he gets that breaking ball, he's going to be a force to deal with. He's not there completely, but if you talked to Chase Wright today he'd be pretty happy with a smile on his face.

PinstripesPlus: When we talked last offseason, you weren't sold on Erick Abreu and his desire to be the best. What did you see from him stuff-wise this year and did you see that desire in him to be the best pitcher he could be?

Contreras: Well he got himself healthy. He stayed healthy this year and that was a key for us once he started pitching to keep himself healthy. Halfway through part of the season he had pretty good velocity, changeup, good breaking ball. As he got more and more innings, he started throwing with less velocity, his curveball wasn't as hard, but he had the changeup and he attacked the zone. So he kept pitching with his stuff. What we accomplished is he pitched and he finished the season. He's healthy and he put in innings this year for the first time since I've been here. So next year when he comes to Spring Training, he'll have some rest and we'll see what he has after having some rest. Abreu finished the year pitching five or six innings every time, getting his 90-100 pitches, and that was a plus. Next year we want to see more velocity, more arm strength, more snap on his curveball, and we'll see what he does in Spring Training. I believe when he got himself into the Charleston rotation he was 87-90 MPH, somewhere at the end he was 84-87 MPH. Again, it was the first time he has pitched some innings for the first time in two years, so we're happy.
