Q&A with Nardi Contreras

We sat down with Yankees Pitching Coordinator Nardi Contreras to get updates on Humberto Sanchez, Ivan Nova, and Jesse Hoover, to find out why the likes of Dellin Betances and Zach McAllister didn't make the long-season leagues, what he saw from George Kontos to skip a minor league level, if Alan Horne pitched his way into Trenton this spring, and much, much more.

PinstripesPlus.com: What can you tell us about the status of Humberto Sanchez and what did you see from him in the short time you've been able to work with him in Spring Training?

Nardi Contreras: Sanchez threw a bullpen today [Thursday] and he's going to throw again a couple of times next week until we can get him to face some live hitters and get him into some games there in the Extended program. He's healthy. He's throwing some good bullpens. Since he has been with us he has shown great velocity, he's thrown a good curveball, and his changeup, he's throwing that too. It's a mixture of the three pitches as he gets prepared to throw batting practice and gets ready for the season.

PinstripesPlus: One of the obvious questions, now that the rosters have been announced, is why wasn't Dellin Betances sent to Charleston to begin the year?

Contreras: Well Dellin's got some pitches but he's got to learn how to do all the other little things, like holding base runners, getting quicker to home plate, stuff that wasn't important for us at the time. Our focus then was to get his delivery to the point where he could throw strikes with what he has. You saw his batting practices with just how dominating he can be, but all the other parts of our game - being quick to the plate, holding base runners, catching and fielding come-backers and bunts, and all that stuff - he needs to start working on that now since his delivery is pretty much intact. Those are things that we're working on now that a pitcher has to do besides just throw a baseball.

PinstripesPlus: Is there the chance we're going to see him in Charleston this year?

Contreras: I couldn't answer that. We'll see how far and how quickly he comes around and how everybody else is pitching. We've got [Lance] Pendleton close to ready to go, we've got [Daniel] McCutchen close to ready to go, [Jesse] Hoover is going to be pitching an inning here shortly, so there's some pitchers a little older than Dellin that are able to do some things besides pitching on the mound that are more ahead than Dellin is. He's an 18-year old stud and he's going to get his chance.

PinstripesPlus: What was the thought process of Angel Reyes getting the nod over guys like Betances and McAllister for Charleston since they were pretty much at the same level seemingly? And how has the development of his changeup gone?

Contreras: It wasn't so much just what I saw this spring as what I saw last year. Was it based on this Spring Training? No, but what Angel did last year during the Gulf Coast League and when he went to Staten Island, even though he didn't pitch real well in the playoff game, he's a lefty who gets it up velocity-wise with the hammer [curveball] and the changeup. He's going to get a chance to compete at Charleston against hitters and hopefully he gets the ball down into the strike zone. He's going to be working each and every day with Carlos Reyes to make sure he is able to do that. The changeup has been good. He developed a good one last year. He had all three pitches, just not command. He threw within the zone and of course because he threw so hard he had a lot of miss swings on pitches that were a little higher than the strike zone. It's just getting the ball down on a consistent basis. His last outing in Spring Training we had an intrasquad game, of the five innings he pitched, he pitched flawlessly just about. Hopefully he builds on that.

PinstripesPlus: What can you tell us about George Kontos and what you saw him from Spring Training? Obviously he and Tim Norton were the big one-two punch in Staten Island last year but Kontos is skipping a level. What did you see from Kontos that makes you believe he's ready for Tampa more so than Norton?

Contreras: George has a little bit more arm strength, he has the offspeed pitches consistently which 'Norty' does not yet. I didn't seem much of him but the reports were pretty good. He has a big league slider, he throws strikes, what he was developing there in Spring Training was his changeup, and he's got the rotation of the curveball. His offspeed pitches were just better and more consistent than Norton, that is why George is at Tampa and 'Norty' is going to be pitching Opening Day in Charleston.

PinstripesPlus: What are your impressions of Anthony Claggett in Spring Training and will he be used as the closer in Tampa like he was in the Midwest League last year?

Contreras: I saw him right at the beginning and we let him be there for a while with his delivery and after that we started to firm up his mechanics. He's got some arm strength and he's got a quality breaking ball. He has a changeup but his delivery needs a little work so he'll be able to command the ball a little better than he was doing. He's got a quality arm and he's probably one of the better arms we have there in Tampa, it's that good. You know we don't do that closing stuff. That's all other organizations. He's going to be an extended-inning person like J. Brent Cox and T.J. Beam. Does that mean he can't close a game? No, he can pitch the seventh, eighth, and ninth inning one time, or the eighth and ninth inning. But no, he's not going to just come in and pitch one inning. We don't do that to those prospects, we give them innings. I don't know, if he had 50 appearances and 55 innings last year, well he may have 45 appearances and about 75-80 innings this year. That's how we'll go.

PinstripesPlus: Is that going to be the same deal when Jesse Hoover make his return to the mound and what can you tell us about his status?

Contreras: Hoover's going to be a different case, he's going to be a one or two inning guy when he comes back after the problems he has worked through. He will pitch an inning [in an Extended Spring Training game], if everything goes according to plan, I think it's on the 13th [of April]. It will be his first inning in over two years, whatever it may be. He'll be throwing his first batting practice and then a second before he gets into a game. He did his first short-side today [Thursday] in two plus years and it was very different for him. There are things that he's going to be going through right now that he hasn't done in the past. He'll be in Extended for a little bit, I don't know how long. He's got great stuff. He's got a great fastball, a great curveball, and his changeup is there.

PinstripesPlus: On the subject of reliever types, there's a report out there that Kevin Whelan allegedly is having some issues with his elbow. Is there any truth to that and what have you seen from him this spring?

Contreras: If there's reports of that, I haven't heard of it. I know his last outing here before he broke up north he was showing good velocity. If he's got a bad elbow, I don't know anything about it. He's got a power arm, he's got a power split, he's got a bigger breaking ball that we're going to tighten up and make it a little shorter, but he is going to be one of those extended-inning guys. He was a closer last year in Lakeland and he's going to be an extended-inning guy in Trenton.

PinstripesPlus: Of all the guys you saw in Spring Training this year, was there a guy who you were pleasantly surprised with how much progress he made since last year?

Contreras: If you're saying about the season, then it's Matthew DeSalvo. He was on his game again this spring, very, very good. Chase Wright, even though he won the Florida State League Pitcher of the Year last season, we sent him at the end to the Major League game to start and he pitched six innings against the Major League Detroit Tigers starting lineup and through five innings he gave up one run and in the sixth inning he gave up two runs. I think that was very exciting. [Tyler] Clippard had a very good spring. He turned it up a notch. Alan Horne was great this spring. He was scheduled to be the number three guy in Tampa and he ended up being the number three starter in Trenton. The consistency of his arm slot that we had changed made him command the ball a lot better and the changeup development was very, very good in Spring Training, plus he has that plus curveball and slider. So everything was clicking for him in Spring Training and it just got him a notch up closer to the Major Leagues because he does have a quality arm and plus stuff all the way around.

PinstripesPlus: A guy we don't talk about too much, but a guy who is on the radar of some people inside the organization, is Paul David Patterson. What have you seen from his this Spring Training?

Contreras: Well Paul Patterson came to camp early, which was the best thing for Paul Patterson. He got to spend every day here pre-spring. His delivery smoothed out, the changeup developed quickly, and the velocity, because he was able to command his delivery, so he started throwing plus fastballs and plus changeups. The curveball spins, it's not quite there, and he's turned himself into somebody we're going to look at here in the future.

PinstripesPlus: Jeff Marquez looked unhittable at times and struggled at other times. What did you see from him this spring?

Contreras: I only got to see Marquez one time. I saw him in his game against the Triple-A team during intrasquad games. He kept the ball down, very good sink. The changeup was there, the curveball was there. The reports weren't as good the whole time around but they were now in his last outing. The curveball is there. He's throwing it for strikes, he snaps them when he needs it for a strikeout and a swing-and-miss. The day I saw him he was throwing strikes with it. It's a lot better curveball and he has better command of the strike zone in the game that I saw him. If he pitches like he did his last outing, we're going to see a lot of good things out of Marquez.

PinstripesPlus: A lot of the fans got to see Steven Jackson on TV this spring. What did you see from him as Spring Training progressed?

Contreras: I'll tell you what, we did a tremendous trade that Mr. Cashman made - an awesome trade to get the players he got for Randy Johnson. [Ross] Ohlendorf has got plus stuff and Steve Jackson has average Major League stuff. He's got real good plus sink and a plus split. The changeup and the breaking ball right now are just average. We played with his delivery once he got back into our camp to smooth out his delivery and then he went to that big league game against, I think it was Toronto. I think he excelled in that game with his new delivery. So he's done really well. It's just another plus arm that Mr. Cashman got for the organization.

PinstripesPlus: I guess the fans didn't see all they had anticipated from Phil Hughes in Spring Training this year. What did you see from Phil this spring that was different from last year?

Contreras: It was the same as last spring. It took Phil a little bit to start clicking last spring and it was the same thing now. He just needs to smooth out his delivery to make sure he stays back. He gets rushy, he starts rushing out, and just get back into the velocity range where he went up to Trenton last year. He still has a plus fastball, just not the plus-plus fastball that he was throwing once he went to Trenton and later. The one thing that was great was the changeup. He was working on the changeup a lot instead of going to his fastball or curveball. His changeup is starting to really work. He's getting the feel, a better taste for it, when to throw it and how to throw it, we were able to develop his changeup here in Spring Training. That was awesome for me, that the changeup got to develop here in Spring Training.

PinstripesPlus: Zach McAllister was showing some really good curveball in Spring Training this year. What have you seen from him and is there a chance we're going to see him in the long-season leagues this year?

Contreras: Again, he's an 18-year old kid who has some guys ahead of him and he's got some work to do. We leave these guys alone when they first get here and then we start working on their deliveries. When we got to mini-camp, the Instructional League, that's pretty much start pounding that delivery, staying tall. It was completely different than what he was used to. He was a collapsed side-arm, almost three-quarters low side-arm type, now he's three-quarter high type of guy, no more slider, no more sink. He's four-seamer, he's curveball. As his delivery is being developed, he also needs to learn how to hold runners, have a quick first step, and doing all the other defensive stuff that comes with pitching. That's what he's doing. And he's not going to throw the two-seamer, he's all four-seamer now. His curveball is way ahead of a lot of 18-year olds.

PinstripesPlus: Every time I saw Ivan Nova this spring, he was lights out. What did you see from Nova this spring and why exactly is he on the disabled list for Charleston?

Contreras: Ivan has moved really quickly. He's throwing the ball really well. He came down with a tired arm after his start against Toronto. After that game he just said his arm was tired so we just shut it down. He's long-tossing now and next week he'll start throwing his bullpen again. You know, we do a lot of throwing, that's what it is. Some of these kids get tired and some of these kids can endure a bit more than others. When he said he was tired, that's all it took. There's no need to mess with any of these young kids that have a great future ahead of them. You saw his games pitched. He commanded all three of his pitches. He made all those college kids from Toronto look like they were high school kids. His fastball, curveball, his velocity is there, his changeup is tremendous. He's got three quality plus pitches and what he had done up to that point in Spring Training, he was throwing them all for strikes and locating them pretty darn good. He's blooming so once he starts throwing bullpens again, we'll see him again, that's all.
