Q&A with Carlos Reyes

We sat down with Charleston Riverdogs Pitching Coach Carlos Reyes for a Q&A session to find out why they scrapped the piggy-back, which pitcher has impressed him the most so far, what he has seen from the likes of Angel Reyes, David Robertson, Garrett Patterson and Nick Peterson, what happened to Grant Duff and his seven walks last week, just how good Tim Norton was in his last start, and more.

PinstripesPlus: How happy are you overall with the team's pitching performance so far this season?

Carlos Reyes: Real happy. We started off 6-0 and then we went into that spell where we lost seven but now we're pitching and playing a lot better. That spell that we went through, it's just executing. Of course walks is always one of my pet peeves. We've done much better. It seemed like that stretch we went through, we just had too many walks than I wanted. The strikeouts were high, but I'll give and take on strikeouts versus keeping our walks down because 75 percent of our walks scored.

PinstripesPlus: Is there a pitcher who maybe has impressed you more so than anybody else in the early going?

Reyes: This last turn around [prior to Monday's start], Michael Dunn really took the bull by the horns. We needed that one starter to turn things around and he's done that. He pitched a great game in Kannapolis, [Angel] Reyes and 'Patty' [Garrett Patterson] did the same, threw the ball well. Then 'Norty' [Tim Norton] came in and put on a pitching display that I haven't seen from him in a long time. He just commanded the far side of the plate - Major League command. That's what I saw. He kept his fastball down and he threw the ball well. He had a great slider, a great changeup - I'm starting to like that changeup more and I think it's going to be a great pitch for him - it looks like a fastball and it's got the movement he wants like his splitter does. It's kind of like a domino effect, once one does well, the next one does well and all of the sudden we're putting some good starts together and you're back on a winning streak again.

PinstripesPlus: You mentioned Dunn doing well, but what have you specifically seen from him through his first few starts?

Reyes: Dunn is a competitor. He won't back down and he goes right after you. He's got a great changeup, a good slider, and he's spotting the fastball. The most impressive thing for me is, he was a position player last year. When I got him we started working on some things and he's really put a lot of effort and hard work into being the pitcher that he is now. He has really polished himself up. I really see a bright future for him at the Major League level. He's just one of those guys you want out there. Dunn is the guy I want in Game 7 of the World Series.

PinstripesPlus: Angel Reyes seems to be the baby of the staff in terms of age. What have you seen from him since the Gulf Coast League and how is his changeup coming along?

Reyes: Reyes is kind of like my son. He has been kind of passed down to me. I see a big future for him. He's got a plus-plus fastball, he's got a great arm. He's developed a changeup. The curveball is there. He needs to try and not throw it so hard, and that's because he's 19-years old. Reyes is young but he's really not that far away from making an explosion. I think this year he's going to turn a lot of heads and he's going to open a lot of doors for himself. He has put some good starts together and it's all positive. The main thing, in his first outing when it was his first time in front of a big crowd, he made a lot of pitches and pitched behind in the count. It was a free-swinging team and it fits into his category right there because he's got that fastball to blow right by you. But we sat and talked and I told him 'you know, you could probably get away with it here and there but as you move up, you're not going to be able to get away with it'. He's got to start pitching, commanding the fastball on both sides of the plate, that changeup - it's a good changeup - he's got to start getting that down, and start getting that breaking ball down. I think that's the third pitch right now that can be just as good as his fastball and his changeup. He just needs to be a little more consistent with it.

PinstripesPlus: It seems when he gets himself into trouble he tends to overthrow. Is that what you see?

Reyes: [With his fastball] he wants to take it to that extra gear he's got and he doesn't need to. When he stays within himself, he's in that third gear. It's hard to tell a latin kid, a young kid especially, that you don't need to try and throw hard. It's going to come out hard. Convincing them to understand that, pitch at 80 percent and not 100 percent every time, let the arm do the work - that's hard. I went through that with him last year and he put together six or seven good starts, good quality starts every time out. He was staying underneath his pitch count, getting the innings he was supposed to, getting the changeup over the plate and having success with it, and that's what I'm trying to get him back to doing again. He's starting to do that now. In fact, when he started realizing pitching 80 percent and like pitching at 100, his velocity started to creep up again. When we muscle up, we don't max out our fastball. In fact, we don't throw as hard. We tend to squeeze the ball too hard. We're not letting it naturally come out and that's what you run across with a lot of kids, get them to be relaxed out there. Let them worry more about pitching, not throwing, and also convince them that the velocity is there. Don't worry about your velocity. That's hard with these young kids. You've been around long enough to see them go 'what was I throwing?'. I don't care, look at the results. That's going to tell you how hard you were throwing. We need to get them to understand it's about pitching, not throwing.

PinstripesPlus: It seems David Robertson is exactly what you're talking about. He had the reputation as a power arm and not much else coming out of college and he seems to be the exact opposite so far. What have you seen from him?

Reyes: I've seen a totally different pitcher [from when he first signed]. We've been doing nothing but dry-side work. I can't get hands-on with him right now [Robertson is in his first 30-days], which he has been just listening. We've been focusing on his flamingo, his separation and direction to the plate, keeping him a little taller, and he's putting that together on his own. He's been begging me to work with him and I'm like, 'can't do it, but you're doing a great job on your own'. He's got a lot of ability. He can spin the ball. He's starting to really like the changeup. I remember when he first got here, his fastball was cutting all the time. We don't want that four-seamer to cut. We want it to cut when want it to, not all the time. So he's starting to stay behind the ball longer and his numbers are speaking for themselves. These are not make-believe numbers, he's doing this every time out. I told him I'd like to seen 10-pitch innings or less and his last outing he threw 17 pitches in two innings. He's starting to pitch to contact. When he was in college - we talked about it - he wanted to strike everybody out. It's not going to work here. That was college, this is the pros. He's starting to learn how to pitch and not be a thrower like he was in college. He's starting to use all of his pitches and he didn't have to in college. He has a fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup. The curveball and slider are both good. We don't know if he's going to keep both of them. We might just pick one of them. They're both quality and you could pick either one. They're both quality breaking big league stuff. His curveball is 12-to-6 and his slider is 6-8 inches with tilt. His thing is he's so inconsistent right now with his separation, but he's starting to keep his balance and separation a little more lately. That's the key for any pitcher. It's about separating over that rubber and getting out front. That's pitching. When you can do that, you can do anything you want.

PinstripesPlus: You said you hate walks. In his previous start, Grant Duff had seven walks. Was that because he was working on something in particular, was it nerves, what was the reason?

Reyes: Duff's fine. I've had him for a whole year, I know him. I told him not to think out there, I'll do the thinking for you. He's a great kid, a hard worker, and he's got a great arm. I've noticed, like a lot of kids, his velocity a little down right now. I think it's a little fatigue but it [the velocity] is starting to creep up again. Usually around the fourth or fifth outings you start to see the velocity. Duff's fine. His biggest thing is getting command of that strike zone and keeping his ball down. He has been doing that. If you look at the outing where he had seven walks, he missed a lot of pitches down in the zone that were borderline strikes. The whole thing with these kids is they need to understand that if they're not getting the pitches called the way they want them down in the zone, you might have to elevate that fastball. With him I think he gets his strike mode happy and wants to avoid contact sometimes. I think he'll be fine. I don't have any worries with my starters. My biggest belief is, in this game in order to succeed, you have to fail. A little failure is going to humble you a little bit and keep you in check.

PinstripesPlus: Charleston was scheduled to have a piggy-back situation and then you changed your minds. What was the reason?

Reyes: Well [Ivan] Nova went down, [Ferdin] Tejeda went down - we were scheduled to go the piggy-back route - but when we lost those two starters, temporarily for right now, we should be getting them hopefully soon, that threw it all out. We've also got eight guys in the pen and we need to let them get some work in. It basically got changed because we didn't have the starters we thought we were going to have out there.

PinstripesPlus: Talking about guys coming out of the bullpen, I know his ERA is a little high in the early going but Nick Peterson appears to be pitching real well. What have you seen from him?

Reyes: Nick's another competitor. I think every pitcher I have, what I like most about them is the way they go out there and compete. They go out there and go after hitters. Nick's game is his fastball. He is developing a slider right now. In fact in his last outing, he threw some sliders that had good legit break to it, some good tilt to it, and his velocity was better. He's getting a better feel for it and his changeup is a good pitch. There's times when he gets into situations where he can command his fastball so well, that if he's going to get beat, get beat with the fastball down and away. It's still the best pitch in the game.

PinstripesPlus: Garrett Patterson seems to be a little snake-bit with all the injuries, which limits his development time. What have you seen from him this season so far?

Reyes: He's throwing strikes, his walks are down, and he's in the strike zone. He's another special pitcher. He's left-handed and to me, lefties are special. 'Patty' can get it up to 97-98 MPH. In his last outing, he sat 90-94 MPH and he's in the strike zone. He's pitching now. Before he was more of a thrower and he was trying to blow it by everybody. Now he's realizing he can pitch here and that's what he is doing, he's pitching. I don't see 'Patty' being with me here for a long period of time, especially if he keeps throwing the ball the way he has. We just need to get him into the rotation, build him up - if these kids keep throwing they way they have been and pitching the way I know they're capable of - I foresee losing half of my staff by the All-Star break. I don't mind that. Our job is to win and also to develop these kids to get them to the next level and get them to New York. This is my first year having 'Patty'. I think he was just a max guy and I think he's realizing he doesn't need to rear back and throw every fastball 97-98 MPH. You don't. If you can pitch 90-94 MPH and hit your spots, like he is doing with movement, you don't need much more than that. Then when you need to turn it up a notch, he can do it and that is what he has been doing. He can elevate his fastball when he needs to. His slider has been such a great asset and he has such a good feel for his changeup, he keeps it down in the zone and it's got movement. When he's able to stretch out and go five or six innings, you'll start seeing what 'Patty' can really do. I was excited he pitched to contact [in his last outing]. He competes.
