Post-Draft Q&A with Damon Oppenheimer

With the 2007 MLB Draft all over and done with, PinstripesPlus checks in with Yankees' Director of Amateur Scouting Damon Oppenheimer for a Q&A session to talk about how he felt they did in the draft, how he feels about signing their high-ceiling selections, what they saw in Andrew Brackman, and much, much more!

PinstripesPlus.com: What are your overall thoughts on the draft the Yankees had?

Damon Oppenheimer: We're really excited for some of the potential of putting these guys into the system and just continuing to strengthen the farm system. We're very excited we might have the opportunity to keep building off of what we were able to do last year.

PinstripesPlus: You took some high-ceiling guys - Greg Peavey, Storen, Carpenter, Angelini - perhaps with some signability concerns, in the later rounds. Was that a pre-draft plan or did things just shake out that way?

Oppenheimer: Yeah. All those guys you hit on have some signability attached to them. During those rounds, it's worth the risk. It's definitely worth the risk for us to take them, hold on to them, watch them this summer, recruit them, and try to show them the positives of signing a professional contract now and become a Yankee. We're going to try and maximize all 50 rounds of this thing [the draft] by seeing if we can find somebody that has a chance to impact this draft.

PinstripesPlus: Talk about Andrew Brackman. Everybody looks at the size and his stuff, but inevitably people zone in on the health concerns. Was his health issues a determining factor at all in your decision to draft him?

Oppenheimer: The idea that Andrew Brackman got drafted at #30, with that talent we had scouted for years, was just too much to pass up. If there's issues with the complete health on him, the reward is way worth the risk and it's something that needed to be done. He's a potential guy that had we been picking in the top part of this draft at the beginning of the year, that would have been a guy we would have targeted. We never thought he'd be there at number 30. The latest reports we had were that he had not been as sharp as before. Obviously the concern that his velocity had not been the same, and his signability, led to his being selected at 30. But like I said, that risk-reward was worth the gamble. In the baseball draft you don't do physicals and things like that before you draft these guys. Nobody is out doing physicals on David Price, or Mike Moustakas, or Josh Vitters. I don't think we're going into this thing that we're buying somebody who is 100 percent healthy. But still, once again, just if something were to happen, worst case scenario, the success rate on these guys if something did happen if it needed to be done are very good. Guys get healthy and they come back. The difference between what was on the board at that point and who we got, it was too huge to pass up.

PinstripesPlus: The last time we talked, you spoke of the great depth at the catcher's position in the draft this year. What did you see from Austin Romine and what can you tell us about his game?

Oppenheimer: We really like Romine. We see him as a young athletic high school catcher with a plus arm. He's got a good bat, hits for some power, and he's got good hands. Our catching program here will be able to refine him real well. We've got a chance with him to have a guy who is good in both halves of the inning behind the plate and those guys are hard to find.

PinstripesPlus: Later on in the sixth round you took Chase Weems. What can you tell us about him, and with his strong commitment to the University of Alabama, is he going to be a tough sign in your mind? There are some reports that he might have to move from catcher down the road. Is that true?

Oppenheimer: What reports are those? That couldn't be farther from the truth. He's a good receiver. I don't know who said that, but maybe they didn't see the right guy. There's zero question about catch and throw, that part wouldn't even be an issue. We'll have a little bit of a fight to sign him. If you combine Romine and Weems, Weems is a leaner kid who is just starting to fill out and get stronger. He's athletic, he's a left-handed hitter with a plus arm. If we turned him around, he's throwing 92-93 MPH and he hits home runs. We scouted him and he's a young, athletic type. These are young high school catchers that are not now guys. Once again, he's a left-handed hitting catcher with a plus arm and good receiving skills. We think we've got a guy who has a chance to be very good.

PinstripesPlus: Talk about Ryan Pope. Here's a guy who, not surprisingly, fell under the radar of media types and didn't make a lot of people's top rankings. What did you see from him and where do you see him fitting in the organization?

Oppenheimer: We saw Pope pitch probably ten times this year. Our scout was on him early. This is a guy who is a right-handed pitcher with a really good delivery, he's got very good arm action, he's got good size, and he's a 90-93 MPH fastball guy with location and he's got a now curveball. He comes from a school that doesn't have much history, but the pitching coach there is an ex-professional player, the head coach there is an ex-professional player, and the kid developed as a late-bloomer coming out of high school. His combination of fastball command and curveball really made him an attractive guy. He really wasn't an under the radar kind of guy to baseball people. Every time you went to see this kid pitch there 10-15 scouts there. Because he's not from Auburn or Alabama, or some place like that, don't let that fool you.

PinstripesPlus: Bradley Suttle seems to be a real quiet kid and he comes across pretty modest. He says he's a pretty good hitter with not much power. What did you see from him, is he better than he is even letting on, and is he a signability concern?

Oppenheimer: He's an accomplished switch-hitter at a big-time program. He's hit and he's got a real good left-handed swing - his right-handed swing is good but not quite as good as his left-handed one - and he has power. I think he might be a little modest. The history of home runs at the University of Texas isn't very good and this guy had double-digit home runs. We like him. Obviously we think he's a switch-hitting third baseman. Those guys are tough to find. He hit as a freshman there. Remember, he's a "C-2", which means he's just a sophomore. The idea that if this guy was there as a junior with the year that he just had, I would think there would be a whole lot of teams heavy on this one [selection]. He's a good player, a steady player. He's not going to wow anybody with spectacular defense but he's going to solid and steady defensively and he's going to hit. He's going to hit a lot of doubles and things like that. He's got good options. Once again, you get to the third round and you've had 153 players come off the board and that one is staring you in the face, you've got to take your shot at signing him. And yeah, he might be a tough sign but we're going to battle it.

PinstripesPlus: Here's a pick that everybody liked, including myself, but one that also has signability concerns. What are your impressions of Carmen Angelini and would he be considered a priority signing?

Oppenheimer: Well we're going to try and sign him obviously. We're going to talk to him heavily. We're going to show him what the Yankees are all about. We're going to show him what minor league baseball is and what we think we have to offer as compared to the limited number of games he's going to play in college over the next three years, where his progress could be as a professional, and he's open to risks [in college]. It seems like we're going to have good dialogue and really make a run at this guy. This guy's got a chance to be pretty darn good Patrick. He's a good high school shortstop and once again, a good athlete and can play. Just like any high school kid, there's some risks but we think there's some pretty good reward here.

PinstripesPlus: Another high-upside guy is Taylor Grote. What did you see from him before selecting him in the draft?

Oppenheimer: He's a left-handed hitter. He played centerfield in high school this year but we consider him more of a corner guy. He's got power, he's got average speed, a good body, a good swing. Donny Rowland, who is our national guy, saw some really good hitters over there with the Angels and he had a really good feeling about this guy. I jump on board when I believe guys who know what they are doing and Taylor Grote is a guy we think can be pretty darn good.

PinstripesPlus: Adam Olbrychowski is another intriguing guy with seemingly good stuff. In fact he seems like a George Kontos type. What are your impressions ?

Oppenheimer: He's a guy from Pepperdine that's a big, strong guy. He's got a really good arm with good stuff. His walks were a little high. He's a bit like George Kontos. I think there's some similarities in this package, which is pretty good. We thought it was the right time and place in the draft, in a draft where we didn't see boat-loads of big arms and pitchers, for us to grab a big arm.

PinstripesPlus: The Yankees didn't draft too many left-handed pitchers. Were you not high on some of the lefties in this year's draft or did it just shake at that way, the way the draft unfolded?

Oppenheimer: We had some lefties that we liked but it just ended up where they weren't in play for us. We got close on a couple. The fact that we didn't any lefties to us in the right spots that had big arms was a part of it too. I think from talking to Nardi Contreras and Mark Newman, the guys that have the big arms in this system are going to get the bulk of the innings. We'd rather take some guys with some arm strength at that upper-echelon. If there were some in the later rounds that we liked that were lefties, then sure. It just didn't seem to be the right spot this year.

PinstripesPlus: Chris Carpenter is another 'C-2'. What did you see from Carpenter, and again, what do you think are your chances of signing him?

Oppenheimer: We're going to watch him go to the Cape [Cod League]. He's going to pitch for Chattham in the Cape. We're going to go up there to see if he can maintain and if he can stay healthy. The risk on him was health. He has not been able to stay healthy consistently long enough to see him, in terms of what they were looking for in the draft. This is a guy we had very good reports on. He's another big right-hander who we've seen pitch 95, 96, 97 MPH - not touch it - but pitch there. I think we're really going to monitor the health to see if he can hold up and stay healthy, analyze it, and make an evaluation from there, hopefully by the end of the summer. I think financially we'd be too far apart at this stage of the game, so I'd say we're going to watch him pitch this summer for sure. This would be a signing more towards the later than the sooner.

PinstripesPlus: Let's talk about Greg Peavey. Here's a kid that was expected to go pretty high in the draft but he fell to the Yankees in the 24th round. What did you see from Peavey and how happy were you to get him there in the 24th round?

Oppenheimer: Going into the year Peavey was on our radar from all the work we did last summer. He was on our radar screen high, top three round-guy going into the draft. He got out to baseball late from playing basketball up there in Washington. We saw him at all the big events last year and then this year, coming off of basketball, he starts off a little bit slow. They get like 9-inches of rain so you don't get to see him pitch that much. We didn't get the opportunity to see him do the things we think he could do and I don't think anybody else did either. We got a glimpse of it from one of our cross-checkers who saw him pretty darn good one day. When he got the 24th round, you're saying to yourself let's take a shot at this guy. Maybe we're able to talk to him, maybe something happens to get it where he does sign. At that point in the draft we're taking a very healthy risk there. If we don't sign him, we're not out a huge pick. If we do sign him, we might have something pretty good.

PinstripesPlus: Drew Storen was another kid that slipped in the draft and he has a strong commitment to Stanford University. What can you tell us about Storen?

Oppenheimer: It's the same situation almost. We sat Drew Storen last year pitch for our team at the even in Wilmington [NC] - the east coast showdown in Wilmington. He pitched for the Yankees' scout team there. We have a good feel for his makeup and we've been around him. We have a real good feel for what Drew is. I've talked to Drew over the summer at other events. I think he's a very, very solid kid and he's got his head on straight. He's not an overpowering guy. He's got good stuff but he has more pitch-ability than great stuff. He's not going to wow you with the radar gun, or throw you the big breaking ball, or something like that. We're going to see him pitch, we're going to watch - he's got Stanford and that will be a tough battle. We'll see how things shake out in terms of financially with what we're able to offer him. This kid's earned from the summer with what he's done from the spring. He's earned the ability to be drafted and to be taken seriously as a signable player.

PinstripesPlus: Another interesting pick was Greg Holle. What can you tell us about his game?

Oppenheimer: Greg Holle is another guy who is a summer draft-and-follow. He came out late. He was a good basketball player up in that Albany area. He's got Texas Christian [TCU], which guys are usually tough to sign out of there. But Holle has been to Yankee Stadium for a workout back in the fall. He came to another one we had right before the draft. He was a guy that was on our team down in Wilmington, so we know this kid. We've got a good feel for him. He wasn't able to come out and do everything that Greg Holle can do this spring because of the weather, where he's from, because of the late start, all that stuff. This is when you draft those guys, when you continue to scout them, and see what happens.

PinstripesPlus: One of the more intriguing guys in the entire draft this year is Pat Venditte because he pitches both left-handed and right-handed. What can you tell us about him?

Oppenheimer: I don't know. My view was tape, it was film. It's interesting, it's obviously unique. The velocity is not too bad. Right-handed he is fringy-average, right around that 88-89 MPH mark, maybe touching 90 MPH range. It's a lot less from the left side but it's amazing to watch this guy throw. It doesn't look awkward from either side. Once again this is a player that our area guy, Steve Lemke, had a little bit of a gut feel for. From what I do, I listen to those guys that I believe in and Lemke's done a good job with Joba Chamberlain last year, McAllister, and Kroenke. At some point, in the 45th round, here we go. We'll take a shot at something like this.

PinstripesPlus: Manuel Barreda, considering he isn't very big but throws pretty hard, is another interesting prospect. What can you tell us about his game and do you see him as a starter?

Oppenheimer: You know, he's 5-foot-10, high school right-handed pitcher, but this guy throws 93-95 MPH and he has pretty good command of his fastball. I think because his size isn't what people are looking for all the time probably hurt him. But in the 12th round, when you can find that kind of fastball from a high school kid, and you get him out here and signed like this, it shows me something. He obviously wants it pretty bad. You know how we piggy-back these kids, so they're all going to get three to four innings. We definitely took him as a starter because he's got three pitches and we'll just see how it goes from there.

PinstripesPlus: Who is the one guy in the draft that you were most surprised was still there that might fly under the radar and surprise some people with the big league career he'll have?

Oppenheimer: Probably for me, Brad Suttle in the fourth round is pretty darn good. That's a guy that could go through a system pretty good. He can hit and he's a proven hitter. Those guys, as you can tell from [Colin] Curtis last year, they seem to progress and move. I really like him. Another guy that you've got to keep your eye on is Damon Sublett from Wichita State. He's a pretty good player. We got him as a second baseman and he's also able to play the outfield. He throws 92 MPH off of the mound as a closer. He's hit, he's always hit there. He's probably a little more athletic than a guy like [Mitch] Hilligoss. I think that's one going to be good. Another guy that's got some pretty good tools is David Williams, the right fielder from Rutgers. He's got some ability and we'll see how that plays out. I like these guys tht we got. The more that I look at this board, the better I feel about it. Now we've just got to get them signed.

PinstripesPlus: On the heels of that point, do you think the determining factor of this draft will come down to how many of these guys you'll sign? Is that how you'll eventually be judged on this draft?

Oppenheimer: Eventually we'll be judged on who all makes it to the big leagues. I think that's for sure, and who we are signing will be a big part of that. We'll do the best that we can to do it, but you've just got to take the talent. Sometimes I think when you compromise too many times with signability it comes back to haunt you down the road. Some of these guys might not sign but it won't be due to a lack of effort on our side. Sometimes that just doesn't happen. We're not thinking that at all. We're going to make a run at all of these guys. Realistically, we're going to end up with some good players.

\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: Another interesting pick was Greg Holle. What can you tell us about his game?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Greg Holle is another guy who is a summer draft-and-follow.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: One of the more intriguing guys in the entire draft this year is Pat Venditte because he pitches both left-handed and right-handed. What can you tell us about him?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: I don't know.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: Manuel Barreda, considering he isn't very big but throws pretty hard, is another interesting prospect. What can you tell us about his game and do you see him as a starter?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: You know, he's 5-foot-10, high school right-handed pitcher, but this guy throws 93-95 MPH and he has pretty good command of his fastball.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: Who is the one guy in the draft that you were most surprised was still there that might fly under the radar and surprise some people with the big league career he'll have?
\r\n
\r\nOppenheimer: Probably for me, Brad Suttle in the fourth round is pretty darn good.
\r\n
\r\nPinstripesPlus: On the heels of that point, do you think the determining factor of this draft will come down to how many of these guys you'll sign? Is that how you'll eventually be judged on this draft?
\r\n
\r\n Oppenheimer: Eventually we'll be judged on who all makes it to the big leagues.
