Q&A with Charleston Manager Torre Tyson

We sat down with Charleston Riverdogs Manager Torre Tyson for a Q&A session to get his thoughts on what he has seen from Mitch Hilligoss since his hit streak, why has Josue Calzado turned around his season, if he's surprised Austin Jackson has done well since leaving Charleston, what he likes best about Michael Dunn, and much, much more.

PinstripesPlus.com: Tell us your impressions of Ivan Nova this year. His talent doesn't seem to equate with the results.

Torre Tyson: He came in and was pretty good at the beginning of the year. We were really impressed with the way he threw strikes, came after guys with his fastball, and really developed a good changeup. He hit a little lull there where he kind of fell apart with runners on base. We were just looking at some head-down body language and stuff like that, and I think that just carried over a few games so he had a few rough outings in a row. Now he's put together two or three solid ones in a row and hopefully he's going to keep building on that.

PinstripesPlus: What's the reason for the body language? Is it because he gets rattled too quickly?

Tyson: I don't know if it's that. A lot of these young players - he's 20 years old I believe - have never dealt with failure. At this level, that's where you really find out what a baseball player has inside. So we've seen that a lot this year with certain guys on the team where it's the first time they've ever had any real failure in their whole career. It's a big jump. 20-years old in this league, you know there's a lot older guys in this league. You just find out a lot about these kids here.

PinstripesPlus: Kyle Anson is in his first full year catching. Obviously he's got the great arm. Talk about his entire defensive game.

Tyson: I think there's definitely something there and I think he's put himself on the map as a prospect. He's outstanding offensively from the left-side and that alone, just being an average catcher should get you a shot. But defensively, he's a game-changer as far as how he throws a baseball. He has shut teams down like Asheville and whatnot when they come here, they just don't want to run on him after the first guy gets thrown out by ten steps. The big thing he has been working on is trying to move a little side-to-side, blocking, receiving is a big issue just as far as concentration, looking the ball in. That's a major transition as a catcher. You're not used to the same thing at third base, looking the ball all the way in. You're still trying to pick some balls instead of getting down early and blocking them. But he's really looked good. He has gotten a lot better in those areas. He still has a ways to go to be a big league catcher, but he's been very impressive for the first year.

PinstripesPlus: Talk about Josue Calzado and the progress he has been making. He didn't have a great first half but he seems to be turning things around in the second half.

Tyson: Even through the first half when he wasn't looking good [numbers-wise], he would always seem to get that one hit a game to hold around .240 or .250. He just sat there, kind of uneventful, hitting in the 7-hole most of the year. We had some guys move up. I kind of moved him up in the lineup out of necessity. Ever since I moved him up to five, or even in the 4-hole, he just took off. He started laying off of the breaking balls that he had been swinging at all year in the dirt. Now he's getting some of those breaking balls up and he's hitting them out of the park, which everyone he hits like that every series, gets him a few extra fastballs. We all know that he can hit the fastball, anybody's fastball. I think that's been the major change with him, just making the pitchers to make adjustments instead of just swinging at the same ball every time in the dirt. You've just to figure that his recognition is getting better at this point and hopefully he'll keep improving.

PinstripesPlus: You predicted at the beginning of the year that Seth Fortenberry would lead your team in home runs. He was a later-round pick though. Are you surprised by his overall game?

Tyson: I think the only thing that surprises me is that he doesn't have 40 stolen bases. That's been an area that we've been attacking, getting better at reading pitchers and reading catchers, maybe stealing some signs, and just knowing when to run and when not to, and getting better jumps. I could have guessed 20-20 out of the gate, that's what I've been saying from the get-go. I love his swing. It's simple and short. He's a little bit right field oriented [pull-hitter], but I knew it was there and he's done exactly what I thought he'd do.

PinstripesPlus: A guy that's no longer here in Charleston - Austin Jackson - are you surprised by the success he has been having in Tampa since his promotion?

Tyson: I think the major thing I saw with him was mechanically. Even though he hit like .330 the first month of his first season here, it was just from his athleticism. It wasn't that mechanically he was solid. He was just getting away with some athletic movements and some great hands, and getting some bloops in. Then through last season we really saw sound development mechanically and he was starting to have a better chance. By the last month, you could really see him starting to grasp the information. Then you saw him go through the Instructional camp and then in Spring Training you could see some strides. When he got here this year, even though his numbers weren't outstanding, you could just see the approach in every at-bat, the consistency was there where it wasn't last year. You know the great thing about him being in this league for two years, everybody knew him this year. They pitched him like he was a Ben Jones, a three or four guy that had killed them before, even though he hadn't. They kind of knew he was susceptible to some breaking balls, so he saw a ton of those. I think just the repetition and the experience of seeing those balls, and recognizing them, that's what made him a better hitter. He had 300 or so at-bats here this year and most of them [pitches] were breaking balls. He became a very good breaking ball hitter as a result. I think now that he has moved up, the guys are around the zone more with their pitches. Yeah the stuff's better, but they are around the zone more, and that's where he excels with his athletic ability and now that he has a little base of his mechanics. I think that's why he's succeeding. This league enabled him to see an ample supply of offspeed pitches, which is exactly what he needed.

PinstripesPlus: Eduardo Nunez, almost the same type of program in that he repeated this level again, also didn't have great numbers when he was sent to Tampa. Was he making the same type of similar progress before he left Charleston?

Tyson: Yeah he was outstanding for us. The last month, he was outstanding. We took away the switch-hitting from him, so he's only hitting right-handed. So there was about a month of adjustment there where he struggled. But once he bought into it, you could just see the confidence. He had showed me something I had not seen in Charleston in the last year and a half, as far as aggressiveness, having a stable base, and taking quality swings. And it translated into his defense. You never want a player to take his at-bats out on to the field, or you never want them to take their errors to the plate. He had been doing that for a couple of years. I just think that simplifying this to one-side and figuring that out, he just took off. He was playing great defense for us. His numbers weren't great, but if you look at where he was, he was at something like .210 at one point, to get back up to where he ended up at before he left us, he had a solid month.

PinstripesPlus: Grant Duff was a power arm who had a great year in the Gulf Coast League last year, but didn't show that type of velocity earlier in the year this season here in Charleston. Did he get his velocity back, and in your opinion, what is going on with his rather high walk totals?

Tyson: I think for him it's just the psyche, just trying all kinds of different things. With every pitch, just to figure things out and over-analyzing everything. He's a got that's a big, tall right-hander. We're just trying to get him in and letting it go and not worry about the walks. He's looking at those stats everyday and is like, 'oh I'm leading the league - that's great'. That's what it gets down to. You've also got to realize that the jump from the Gulf Coast League to here is a huge transition. I didn't see him in the Gulf Coast League, but I do know the strike zone discipline is much better here, so you're going to see your walks totals go up a little bit if you're not always around the zone. Velocity-wise, he has shown flashes of where he was last year, it's just a matter of him trying to aim, trying to pitch, and not just letting it go. Hopefully we can get that back from him and start seeing some more success.

PinstripesPlus: Michael Dunn seems to have been your ace of the staff all year long. What have you seen from him development-wise from the beginning of the year until now?

Tyson: I've always loved him since I had him as a hitting coach last year when he was a backup for us and hitting .087 and whatnot, because he's one of the most fierce competitors I've had the chance to coach. I think that's what makes him so good on the mound. The only thing I see is that's got to learn to control that a little bit at times. He's had a couple of outings this year - he'd be sitting with a 2.00 ERA if not for two or three of these outings where he got so frustrated at the umpire or himself that he just reared back, let it go, and made some mistakes up in the zone and then it kind of snowballed from there. His competitive nature, and he's just a bulldog on the mound, it reminds me of Brandon Claussen when he was here, that type of guy that just wants the ball everyday and is willing to do whatever it takes to get guys out.

PinstripesPlus: Mitch Hilligoss obviously had that 38-game hit streak earlier in the year. What specifically have you seen from him since the hit-streak?

Tyson: Even now where there is no streak, you see the same thing everyday. He's got such unbelievable bat-head awareness and just an ability to get his hands on the ball - barrel to the ball - he's going to hit no matter where he is. If we can straighten him up mechanically, he's going to be a big-time player. You know, everybody told me he was a baseball player, and I knew what that meant. But after watching him play for four months, he has gone from a guy where I could see the tools and see where people thought he was a prospect, to now in my mind he's a no-doubt big leaguer. It's just a matter of time now. As far as what I've seen from him, he just battles every single game. At third, he's gone from 'can he make this transition' to absolutely - I've been asked if he can play defense at Double-A right now and I was like, 'oh sure, he's an average third baseman in Double-A right now'. He still has some work to do to be a plus-defender, but from how far he's come from here, if he continues to work, there's no doubt he'll be a plus- defender over there. We put him at shortstop for a couple of games last week just to try and get some more offense, I was really impressed. He's just a guy you could put anywhere and he'll be fine. I put him in left field in Rome when we had a couple of injuries about two months ago and he looked fine in left too. He's just one of those guys, he'll play anywhere. He could be 0-3 with a walk and his uniform is dirty from neck down. His walk, he's diving back into first five or six times, stealing a bag - that's why I'm completely sold. No matter what the situation, no matter the score, the guy's always in the game and fighting for every inch.

PinstripesPlus: Jesse Hoover is a guy who didn't pitch the last two years with the back injury. Realizing that health is the number one concern this year, what have you seen from him as he has been easing himself back into action?

Tyson: He's another older guy who feels like he should dominate the guys at this level, being 25 years old. I think he's realizing that just needs to come out here and figure out things for himself, instead of just trying to get guys out. We've been talking about learning to locate his fastball, even if he knows he can get the guy out with his breaking ball at this point. We've really got to work on getting him ready for the next level, not just getting guys out at this level. He has really improved the last three or four outings with command of all pitches. He's looking good.

PinstripesPlus: Ferdin Tejeda is kind of in the same boat in that he missed a lot of time. What have you seen from him up to this point?

Tyson: 'Ferdie' is just cruising along, he just lobs the ball up there at 92, 93, 94 MPH. I know he's got 97 MPH in there. I don't know if he's comfortable doing it yet, but he doesn't need it at this level. He has developed a nasty changeup. Originally we thought he was just a fastball-slider guy. The nights that his slider has been on, he has been unhittable. His changeup seems to be there nightly, but when his slider is on, there's nobody in this league that can touch him.

PinstripesPlus: David Robertson, even though he has moved up, is a bit of a different pitcher than Tejeda. What did you see from him before he went to Tampa?

Tyson: He has a little cut to his fastball, he sits 90-91 MPH, but he just pounds the zone with strikes. He gets ahead 0-1, then 0-2, and then he can do whatever he wants. He's got a good breaking ball, that once guys are behind, they've got no chance. He had just started to learn to locate in [inside], which was another weapon because he had not done that before. He was used to pounding low and away to guys, and he does it, but guys started cheating out there so he's got to learn to pop a guy inside once in a while. He was outstanding, he was dominant.
