Q&A with Nardi Contreras - Part II

Nardi Contreras, the Yankees Minor League Pitching Coordinator, sits down with PinstripesPlus.com for a long Q&A session. In Part two of our multi-part series, Nardi says why the Yankees fans should have faith in Ross Ohlendorf, what was the biggest difference in Alan Horne this year, what he sees of Daniel McCutchen's future, if Jeff Marquez is nearly big league ready, and more.

PinstripesPlus: We all know what happened with Chase Wright at the big league level this year. When we spoke after he was sent back down to the minor leagues, you mentioned he wasn't commanding his pitches like he needed to. Did you start seeing that towards the end of the minor league season?

Contreras: I think in his last two playoff games, he started clicking to the point where he was earlier in the season before his advancement to the big leagues. He was not in command, but he was throwing strikes and keeping the ball down. He won his first game in the big leagues, not in great command, but he was making some pitches. But of course in the second game, it didn't work out and he was sent down. Most of the time when kids are sent down after that experience in the big leagues, it's an adjustment again. Things just happen. Most kids have a little problem when they get back. They start thinking, 'boy I've really got to be doing this in command, I've got to be pinpoint, I've got to be at the corners,' and they get out of whack. Chase was one of the kids that it happened to. I think he won eight games in Triple-A ball after being sent down, but he was still not in command of his pitches, so we sent him down [to Double-A] when we made the moves with Joba and Ian. He struggled at the beginning but he got better and better with the work. Yeah, by the end, he started pitching like he had at the beginning of the season. We're really happy about that.

PinstripesPlus: I know the development of the curveball was the key emphasis for him at the beginning of the year. How did that progress this year, and in your opinion, would it be a mistake to dismiss Wright based solely on his struggles this past season?

Contreras: You can't write off Chase who is a 22 or 23-year old left-hander and who went to the big leagues from Double-A. He went back to Double-A and he's getting himself back to what he is. He's got to continue to work on his breaking ball. It's not a curveball and it's not a slider. We just call it a breaking ball from that angle it's at. It's going to be effective to left-handers because it sweeps. We know he has his changeup and we know that he sinks it, and he pitches inside. He's going to have to be a command guy because of the velocity. He's not blessed with the tremendous velocity, but he's got a lot of sink, he's got a great changeup, and he's not afraid to pitch inside. He's not at the same arm slot he has been at his entire life. He's only been at that three-quarter slot for two years.

He's got to command those part of his repertoire. The breaking ball is needed for the left-handers. A lefty is not going to go up to the big leagues and get left-handers out on a consistent basis with just his fastball and changeup. We've got right-handers that can do that. He needs that sweeping breaking ball for lefties or back-door it to a right-hander. That's going to be continued in Spring Training and then during the season. I'm not sure it was completely there at the end of the season, but it was better again. He still has to progress with his breaking ball.

Contreras: Well like Wright, Tyler Clippard isn't blessed with the great arm. The fans see the lower velocity, the herky-jerky delivery, and some can't help believe that he's more of a gimmicky pitcher. What did you see from him after he was sent down? Did he re-discover some of that magic that he had in previous years, and again, is this a guy the fans shouldn't write off?

Contreras: Clip is one of those pitchers where his delivery has to be, at all times, correct, because he's got so many moving parts. His first game out there [in the big leagues] he made some quality pitches and he got himself a 'W' [win] against the Mets when we really needed a win. He located his fastballs inside and his curveball and changeup were there. The longer you stay there [the big leagues], the longer you're not doing the things that we do down here in the minor leagues with staying on the delivery. It's just a different story at the big leagues. I know when Andy Pettitte first got to the big leagues, even in his second year, he still worked on his stuff in between starts.

When you're not working on that at the big league level, you lose the feel, you lose the delivery, and slowly that's what happens. If you don't have the command at the major league level, especially with the lower velocity that Clip has, you're going to struggle. When he got back down to the minor leagues, his delivery was in dire need of work. At the Triple-A level, he's going to struggle a lot because those guys have been in the big leagues so we sent him back down to Double-A. There was always continuous work with Scotty Aldred and it just got better and better.

Clip will be here in the offseason. He'll start showing up in November or December and we'll start working on his delivery in private, not with a baseball in his hand, but dry-work. Then when he starts pitching in January, he'll be closer to the delivery that he needs. He's a delivery that needs to be worked on everyday until one day where it just becomes automatic for him. There's a lot of funkiness to his delivery so he's got to work on it constantly until one day in the big leagues it becomes natural. It's like Kevin Appier. He had a lot of funk in his delivery until one day it came [naturally]. I can't tell you if he worked on it everyday at the big league level or not, but I would think so because it became automatic for him. It's not automatic yet for Clippard.

PinstripesPlus: Stuff-wise, do you still feel confident he can be successful at the big league level?

Contreras: Oh yeah. When he went to the big leagues, in his first outing from all the work he had been doing everyday, he succeeded. After that, these kids just feel embarrassed to do something the other big leaguers are not doing. Even though we pound it in their heads and keep telling them they need to do this stuff, they still have that embarrassed feeling and things are not done everyday like they should be and like we do it here in the minor leagues. So yeah, Clip comes in next year and we'll be working everyday on his delivery and his pitches, finding the release point again, and making it work.

PinstripesPlus: Ross Ohlendorf really had a bad year numbers-wise but yet the organization has remained very high on him. Why should the fans overlook the numbers and have the same faith in him that the organization clearly does?

Contreras: It just doesn't happen right away that you can from being a starter all of your career and then all of the sudden you're thrown in there as a reliever. As a starter, he was trying to pace himself. He was throwing so many different pitches. He was learning the four-seam fastball because he had always been a two-seam fastball guy. Over here [with the Yankees] we use both fastballs, to make sure that when he comes into a lefty, to make sure that he's going to power that four-seam fastball into the hands on a lefty. That's something he had never done with Arizona, so that was a new pitch for him. He was learning his delivery different from what he had in Arizona.

We gave him the 30 days and those 30 days didn't happen, it didn't click, so now we've been teaching him our delivery. That was another thing he was trying to cope with. The curveball was new to him, which he wanted to learn to get some left-handers out with because he wasn't getting left-handers out in Arizona. His numbers against lefties was like .300 against lefties so he was learning the curveball. Obviously it didn't work as well as he was trying to learn these things, but here's a kid that has a power sink and he's got some arm strength. He was trying to hold back some and pitch six or seven innings as a starter. Well once we put him in the bullpen, all of the sudden he has an above-average fastball. He has shown some power but he still wants to throw his other pitches.

By the end of this [minor league] season we took away pitches and he's going to learn a splitter when he goes out to Arizona. He'll learn the splitter to have a swing-and-miss pitch to go with his two fastballs - his four-seamer and his two-seamer - and his slider. Here's a kid now who throws an above-average fastball, he can sink it, he has the four-seam, he has his slider, and he's going to learn the split in Arizona for another swing-and-miss pitch. He must have put himself on the map because he was sent up to the big leagues. People saw something in all of those bullpens. They saw that arm strength, that saw that life. Is he going to be ready for the closer? No he's not going to be ready to be the closer. That's a different dynamic to close games.

PinstripesPlus: Alan Horne didn't have the greatest numbers in Tampa in 2006 but then went on to win the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year award this season. What was the biggest step in his development this year?

Contreras: His mechanics. At the end of the [2006] season, he started clicking. He put up all of those ugly numbers at the beginning of the season as he was learning his delivery. That started clicking and all of the sudden he was commanding pitches. He came to Instructional League [last year] and his delivery got even better and his changeup started developing. Then in Spring Training he felt comfortable in his delivery and he could command the far-side of the plate, keep it down on away from right-handers and in on lefties, and he could throw his changeup for a strike. In his last outing in Spring Training was the one that could either make him or break him to go to Double-A or A-ball. In that last outing he was throwing strikes with his changeup and he was commanding the far-side. He made it to Double-A on his last outing in Spring Training and there he is, pitcher of the year in the Eastern League, throwing all four pitches.

PinstripesPlus: Would you say he's close to being big league ready right now?

Contreras: Yeah, he's pretty close. It's just that it's getting tougher for these kids because of all the movement we're having. It's a great problem we have in the organization with all of these pitchers that are getting closer to the big leagues. Mr. Cashman is going to have a tough time because we have a lot of guys that could pitch in the big leagues and they all can't pitch there, at least not for the Yankees.

PinstripesPlus: A guy that doesn't seem too far away either is Daniel McCutchen. I know you love his stuff, but what was the biggest difference in his development between Tampa and Trenton this year?

Contreras: Well McCutchen's stuff is very, very good and he attacks the zone. He's got poise and he doesn't give into hitters. He'll attack the zone but he doesn't say 'here's a fastball over the middle of the plate, now hit it.' He's going to attack the zone with location of any of his pitches. He's got two offspeed pitches that are major league quality pitches that he throws for strikes. He can throw to the far-side of the plate, he can pitch inside to left-handers and he can sink the ball. He's got a lot of game in him, tremendous game in him. He's learned that it doesn't all have to be about power. He was a max-effort guy and he's not so max-effort anymore so he's able to go deeper into the game. McCutchen can pitch with a lot of stuff and he's real close to the big leagues too.

PinstripesPlus: With the young pitchers the Yankees have and now with the depth of starters at the minor league level, everybody is assuming he'll go into the bullpen at some point. Is that a correct assumption?

Contreras: He's got the pitches to be a starter, but I also believe he's got the arm to be a reliever also. Again, that's not going to be my call. He offers us tremendous flexibility because he attacks the zone with three pitches, and four if you say four-seam and two-seam [fastballs]. He can command. He can go long, he can be middle. Can he close? Well we've got closers. We've got guys that can do that. Does that mean he can't? He's never been put in that role. I'm not sure he's ever been put in the ninth inning and knows what it takes to close out a ninth inning, but if the day comes and Mr. Cashman or Mr. Torre, or whoever makes that decision, comes to tell us to teach him how to pitch at the end of the game, we'll do that. Right now he can pitch long and he can pitch as a starter, but he's real close to pitching in the big leagues.

PinstripePlus: Well Jeff Marquez led the farm system in wins this year. I know the curveball was a big emphasis for him this year, but his strikeouts seem down this year. What did you see from him development-wise this year and just how good was his curveball by the end of the year?

Contreras: The curveball is quality. Jeff is happy with contact. He would rather get that out quickly with a two-seamer or the changeup and make them pop it up or get a ground ball. He's still in the mindset with two strikes, he'll throw a curveball, and if they don't chase it down in the dirt or something like that - I don't have the numbers in front of me but he was probably around 150 innings and probably had somewhere around 100 strikeouts. Now, if he has just 50 walks or so, that's where we want him to be around, having half as many walks as strikeouts. He has around three walks per nine innings so he attacks the zone.

He's a different type of guy with how he goes about it. There were times during the season where he went out and did get some strikeouts. He had games where he struck out nine or ten batters, but most of the time it was between one and five strikeouts, somewhere in that area. That's how he pitches. In his last playoff game, he was still hitting the mid-90's, so his arm strength was there. He was using his four-searmer and his two-seamer was still biting.

Look at his numbers. All you have to do - I'm going to study films this offseason because obviously the manager for the Binghamton team saw something in his delivery because of you take Binghamton away from his stats, he's somewhere in the two's [ERA-wise]. Binghamton probably put a seven or eight earny [ERA] on him this year. I think four of his losses in August were to Binghamton and he beat every other team.

I'm really going to have to go into detail in the video room to see what that is, but he was tremendous this year. There's another pitcher who attacks the zone with a power-sink, he's got a power changeup, and he's got a curveball that is a major league curveball.

PinstripesPlus: I know it's not your call on who does what at the big league level, but with the likes of Horne, McCutchen, and Marquez being close to big league ready, don't they give the organization some flexibility as far as Joba's future role in the organization? Because they are viable starting options, doesn't that mean Joba could theoretically stay in the bullpen?

Contreras: For me, I see Joba as a #1 starter. I see Joba as a [Justin] Verlander or Felix Hernandez. There's only two other guys like Joba, at least in the American League, that I know of that has that kind of stuff. These are #1 starters. That's how I see Joba, as a #1 starter. That's just me talking. This kid can win, he can be the horse. He can win 20 games so why use him that way [as a reliever] when he could win and save a lot of innings for those relievers. I wish Mo would stay here forever, but this guy [Joe] Borowski had like 45 saves and he's got an ERA of 5.00. He's no Mo and he's not Joba, but he's got like 45 saves with way below stuff compared to these guys. There's other relievers in the big leagues right now that have less stuff, but I don't see guys like that starting in the big leagues and winning 20 ball games. Joba can win 20 ball games. That's where I see the difference.

\r\nPinstripesPlus: I know it's not your call on who does what at the big league level, but with the likes of Horne, McCutchen, and Marquez being close to big league ready, don't they give the organization some flexibility as far as Joba's future role in the organization? Because they are viable starting options, doesn't that mean Joba could theoretically stay in the bullpen?
\r\n
\r\nContreras: For me, I see Joba as a #1 starter.
