Beyond The Top 50 Prospects

We had nearly 80 players considered for our Top 50 Yankee Prospects rankings last week. For those who barely missed the "Top 50", they have not been forgotten. As we take a look at the near misses, we'll analyze how close they came, where they might rank next season and why they missed the list altogether. Now, let's look "Beyond the Top 50."

Wilkins Arias just turned 27 years old a little over a week ago and hasn't made it out of A-ball yet, hurting his chances of ever being considered a Top 50 prospect. But possessing a fastball that can range from 92-96 MPH from the left side, as well as a plus slider and a new split-finger that has helped him against right-handed batters, he can't be overlooked.

Stephen Artz held opposing South Atlantic League batters to a paltry .137 batting average in 2007 after signing with the Yankees out of the United League. He gets by with a unique arm slot, impeccable command of an 88-92 MPH fastball, and a very good slider. Undrafted out of college, he may never be considered a top prospect in the pitching-rich Yankees' farm system but he's got a chance to put up some good numbers.

Tim Battle has a nightmare 2007 season with the Tampa Yankees, hitting a career-low .218 and showing no progress with taking walks or cutting down on his strikeouts. While his strong arm could make him a good conversion candidate, his top-flight defensive abilities and plus speed will keep him in the outfield mix a while longer as the Yankees hope he can put it all together at some point.

Andrew Brackman didn't make the list merely because he wasn't healthy long enough for anybody to see him pitch outside of the Yankees' scouting department. Rumored to throw a 99 MPH fastball with a four-seam fastball that he had just begun to throw in his final year of college, he averages 94-95 MPH with his sinking two-seamer and compliments his plus fastballs with two different curveballs and a developing changeup. Currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, he should move relatively quickly now that he's a member of the 40-man roster.

Matt Carson not only led the Trenton Thunder in home runs this past season, he had more than doubled any other player's home run production. Enjoying his best minor league season since 2004 when he hit .303 with 12 home runs and 21 stolen bases with the Battle Creek Yankees, his plus defensive outfield play and versatility keeps him in the mix as a potential big league reserve outfielder someday.

Francisco Castillo, once one of the promising young pitchers in the Yankees' organization, inexplicably saw his velocity drop from 95 MPH to 90 MPH during the 2006 season. Once again unable to rediscover his power arm in 2007, it was finally revealed a bone chip near the nerve in his pitching arm zapped him of his power. When healthy, his plus fastball-plus slider combination is among the best. He'll need to prove he's healthy once again and show his old stuff before he can re-take his place among the Top 50, but considering he just turned 21 last month, he still has time on his side.

Noel Castillo pitched in the Gulf Coast League this past season as a 23-year old, skewing his incredible season [6-3, 1.88 ERA] just a tad. Numbers aside however, he showed off a live arm, hitting 95-96 MPH at times and making quick progress with his secondary pitches. He's too old for the levels he has pitched thus far, but as a late signee, he could sneak up on people if he continues to progress.

Justin Christian barely fell out of the Top 50 rankings due the recent additions of some top-flight talents from the 2007 draft. Literally allergic to cold weather as a side effect from medicine he was taking earlier in the year, he got off to a slow start in Trenton [.235, 43 K's in 255 at-bats] but turned things around in Triple-A Scranton. When healthy, his plus speed and aggressive style of play keeps the door open as a possible big league reserve outfielder.

Anthony Claggett, once a closer in the Detroit Tigers farm system, made 16 starts for the Tampa Yankees in 2007. He has a solid repertoire, boasting good command of a 90-93 MPH fastball, an average curveball, and a developing changeup. His stuff doesn't profile as a backend relief pitcher and it does get buried a bit with all the starting pitching prospects in the Yankees farm system. He projects to lie somewhere in between the two roles and could fly under the radar in pinstripes.

Phil Coke, a 25-year old southpaw, followed up his solid 2006 campaign with an even better showing with the Tampa Yankees this past season [7-3, 3.09 ERA]. His changeup is a true plus pitch but lacks the arm strength with his fastball to project as anything more than a middle reliever or backend starting pitcher. He has proven to be very effective against left-handed batters and could carve himself a niche in that capacity.

Wilkins De La Rosa has the arm strength to rank among the Top 50 prospects in the Yankees farm system. However, considering 2007 was his first full year on the mound after being converted from the outfield, he is a bit too raw with his slider and changeup [both still developing] to crack the system's best just yet. As a lefty though, he can hit 97 MPH at times and that makes him a big-time sleeper.

Grant Duff has the size and the power arm to be quite intriguing. Able to hit 95 MPH with his fastball and possessing a truly devastating slider at times, he could develop into a solid relief pitching prospect. A mental hangup pitching exclusively from the stretch earlier in the 2007 season doesn't make that projection a truly safe one however. If he can prove to be effective out of the bullpen consistently, he's got the stuff to move quickly.

Cody Ehlers went from the Florida State League Hitter of the Year in 2006 to a struggling offensive player in 2007. He battled nagging injuries all year long but still managed to collect 31 doubles in just 106 games. His solid defensive play and good gap power still makes him quite intriguing but has seen the likes of Juan Miranda overtake him in the prospect depth charts at first base.

Taylor Grote made it three straight years the Yankees took a high-ceiling pick out of high school in the eighth round of the draft [Austin Jackson in 2005 and Dellin Betances in 2006]. He has shown to have a patient approach at the plate and solid all-around skills but, needing to add strength, he has a few outfield prospects to compete with to edge his way into the Top 50 realm - a feat he should accomplish as soon as 2008.

Jesse Hoover was once one of the most promising relief pitching prospects in the organization until back issues kept him out of action for over two years. He finally proved he can stay healthy in 2007 but was unable to showcase the 97 MPH fastball he once had. Sitting mostly 90-91 MPH this past year, if he can rediscover his old form, he has the plus curveball to be a top pitching prospect once again.

Steven Jackson, obtained from the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Randy Johnson trade a year ago, had a disastrous time in Triple-A Scranton this past season. Part of the problem though is he was transforming himself from a sinkerball pitcher to more of a power pitcher. Now in the reliever's role he could find his calling and move quickly as a result.

Christopher Malec, at just 5-foot-11, lacks the size and raw power to project as a top prospect. But considering he can play a multitude of positions [first base, second base, and third base], the former cancer survivor has the versatility and great makeup to fight his way up to the big leagues.

Melky Mesa, like Battle, has some of the best tools in the entire organization but has been unable to make enough consistent contact at the plate to tap his true potential. He is one of the best fastball hitters in the farm system and he has made some progress laying off bad breaking pitches, but will need to improve even more in that category to rank among the Top 50.

Tim Norton was one of the more intriguing senior signs coming of the University of Connecticut in 2006. He was having another solid season in 2007 after a dominating performance with the Staten Island Yankees a year ago until he underwent rotator cuff surgery - an injury without a high success rate for returning. He has the great makeup and work ethic to make a full recovery but will need to do so to get back into the Top 50 mix.

Adam Olbrychowski has a live enough arm to rank among the best the system has to offer but had a hard time making adjustments to his mechanics and delivery in his professional debut season with the Staten Island Yankees. He sits 90-93 MPH with his fastball and has a great changeup to go along with it, but his slurvy slider is still too new and he has had command issues so far in his young career. If he can gain better command of his pitches, he has the talent to be a Top 50 prospect.

Lance Pendleton is another Tommy John recipient working his way back. He's inching his way closer to a full return and even got into a handful of games with the Gulf Coast League Yankees this past season. When healthy, he flashes a 90-93 MPH fastball and a very good curveball but has seen the Yankees' farm system get incredibly deep over the last two years.

Braedyn Pruitt finished second in the NY-Penn League with a .347 batting average. Possessing great plate discipline, he had more walks than strikeouts and has the type of bat control to be a legitimate big league hitter someday. Lacking size and power however, he doesn't profile as a big league corner infielder and those happen to be his positions right now. If he can get stronger, he has a bat that will take him far.

Wady Rufino, the Yankees' top International signing back in 2003, finally had the type of year in 2007 [.345 and 6 home runs in just 116 at-bats] that everybody had expected. But considering he was 22 in the Gulf Coast League this past season against much younger competition, he'll need to prove his performance wasn't a fluke. He still has a lot of supporters inside the organization and still has the talent to be a top prospect once again if he can keep it going.

Josh Schmidt won't make many top prospect rankings with his 86-89 MPH fastball but does possess the necessary out-pitch with his plus slider and unique delivery to be devastating against right-handed batters. He proved he could pitch lower in the zone in 2007 and struck out over twelve batters per nine innings. He may never crack the Top 50 again but he could quietly rise through the ranks as a possible right-handed specialist someday.

Chase Weems, like Grote, has a world of talent but lacks the physical strength right now to rank among the Top 50. Built like former catching great Benito Santiago, Weems has a thin but muscular build and a bazooka for an arm as well. He also has a very calm presence about him in the batter's box, very advanced for a high school player. With his talent, it's just a matter of time before he comes a top prospect and adding some muscle to his rather slender frame will only expedite that process.
