While innings are Marquez's main priority during the AFL, they have been tough to come by while he's working out of the bullpen. However, as is the case with most minor leaguers, development always plays a role each and every time they take the field.
When asked about his goals during the AFL, Marquez wants to keep working on all of his pitches; even he's only facing hitters once per game.
"I'm relieving, so I'll just go out there and try to work on all my pitches," replied Marquez.
Known primarily as a sinker/changeup pitcher during his minor league career, one of the pitches that Marquez has worked into his repertoire a bit more is the four-seam fastball.
The pitch has mostly been used to get ahead in the count so that he can use his slider as his strikeout pitch.
"I'm throwing mostly two-seamers but I throw four-seamers, usually on the first pitch - away to righties or in[side] to lefties - something true that will keep them off-balance and I can throw it for two strikes."
The other pitch that Marquez uses to get ahead of hitters is the curveball.
"I use the curveball early in the count for a first pitch strike but there are [also] times where I can use it for a strikeout," opined Marquez.
Once Marquez gets ahead of hitters, he has a changeup and slider combination that can both be used in put away counts. But the changeup had given him some trouble in the past when he would set his hands at different levels in his delivery, but Marquez appears to have worked past those issues.
"I've kind of messed around with keeping my hands up or down but I went back to where I was [originally]," said Marquez.
So as Marquez gets closer to putting all the pieces together, one of the questions that remain on many people's mind is whether Marquez will eventually be used as a starting pitcher or as a reliever.
"I consider myself more of a starter over a reliever but obviously whatever chance I get to pitch in the big leagues – I'm going to do whatever's good for the team, whether it's as a starter or a reliever".
