Damon Sublett, in his first 16 games in center, posted 40 putouts, one assist and two errors. Sublett said he has just two days of practice before he had his first outing as a centerfielder.
"It's fun. I mean it's a lot different in center than it is in second," he said. "It's a good move. I enjoy it. The game seems to go a lot quicker out there, which is kind of weird. I don't know why."
Sublett said he didn't engage in any discussions before he moved to the outfield. He said the organization felt he would be more productive in the new position.
Center field wasn't everything Sublett thought it would be. He's realized his new position is just as important as his former one.
"You've got to stay in the game, because I think you might move out there and think, ‘Oh you're not in the game as much. You don't get that many plays, but you still have to pay attention,'" Sublett said. "At any moment somebody could hit a ball over your head or in the gap that might change the game. You've got to be ready for that."
There are still adjustments Sublett said he needs to make. While he feels confident in his new role, Sublett said he's been working extra on fly balls.
He wants to improve on judging the ball. Sublett said there have been a few plays he feels where he could have done better.
"I had some bad reads [on some line drives] that just went over my head when I probably should have got them," he said.
While his new position looks to be long-term, Sublett said he doesn't know if he will return to second base.
"I have no idea. I mean maybe some day I may play both or something, but right now I'm just going to be out in center."
